Exercise 11. Listen to a talk about solo hobbies and tick if each statement is true (T) or false (F).
Some people prefer spending their free time alone and doing things by themselves. Here are some good ideas for such solo hobbies.
The first is photo taking. Photography allows you to see the world from a different perspective. These days, you don't have to spend lots of money
on an expensive camera. You can develop photography skills with just your smartphone.
Writing is another solo hobby. It allows you to express yourself in your own language. Spend time writing down your thoughts in a blog or create lOMoAR cPSD| 44990377 a poem… are all good.
Another choice is taking an online class. Pick a subject that interests you and spend some time learning more about it. If you're doing it for
pleasure, you don't have to worry about grades, just enjoy expanding your knowledge!
You may choose cooking or baking. Spend some time trying out different recipes. If you ever want to invite your friends over for a small party,
you'll have everything ready planned. 4
Exercise 12. Listen and fill in each blank with a word.
Many teenagers enjoy spending their free time doing similar things. They can be shopping, going to parties, hanging out with friends, playing
video games, watching movies, or just doing nothing.
Leisure activities are not a waste of time, or useless, as some people think. For example, hanging out with friends is a great way to chill out. Doing
things together trains them some soft skills: listening to others, negotiating, and sharing work in a team. While talking and doing things together,
they learn something interesting or new from their friends too. Sport is another example. It’s a good way to keep them fit, improve their health,
and train them to be disciplined.
On the other hand, when teenagers get tired of carrying out the daily routine and doing homework, they look for a way to relax. For that reason, it
is understandable why they would choose to take a rest on the sofa and watch TV or have fun playing video games. lOMoAR cPSD| 44990377 5
Exercise 13. Listen to Jack and Beth talking about the weekend. Circle the correct answer A, B, or C for each question.
Jack: Our friend Tom is coming to visit us. What do you want to do at the weekend?
Beth: Well… I must go shopping with my mother on Saturday morning.
Jack: Tom hates shopping. I think Tom and I could go to the Science Museum. When you finish shopping, you can join us.
Beth: Fine. What shall we do in the afternoon?
Jack: We’ll go to our cheese rolling competition. Tom loves sport and fun, so he will like it.
Beth: Great. Do you want to eat at home in the evening?
Jack: What about going to the Chinese restaurant near the square. The food there is delicious and it’s quite cheap.
Beth: Ok. Now, what about Sunday?
Jack: We are all keen on cycling, so we can go cycling in the countryside in the morning.
Beth: Yes, and we’ll prepare lunch, so we could have a picnic by the river.
Jack: I love it. How about going to the cinema after lunch?
Beth: We’ll ask Tom and see what time his train home is.
Jack: Perfect. We will have a good time together.

Tom: Oh yes. I also like the brocades in different sizes, colours and patterns.
Mai: Right. For the Mong, weaving brocades and farming is important. Did you visit the picturesque terraced fields?
Tom: I did. They grow rice and corn for a living. When I came to their house, I saw them hanging corn and drying rice in the sun.

Tom: I know. The main doors are only open on special occasions.
Mai: Wow, I didn’t know that. 9
Exercise 12. Listen to Minh talking about the market in his area, and decide if each of the following statements is T (True) or F (False).
Welcome to our floating market on Cai Rang River. It is about 6 kilometers from the center of Can Tho City. The market is a very special market.
Most of the market activities are around 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sellers often bring their produce to the market very early. You will be surprised to see
thousands of wooden rowboats in various sizes and shapes. Each rowboat sells one kind of food.
In the past, it wasn’t a market. People just travelled along the river and sold things on their wooden rowboats. Now Cai Rang Floating Market has
become a big market. People can buy almost everything that the Mekong Delta has to offer in this market including fresh fruits or specialties.
People can also try various Vietnamese traditional food such as banh mi, hu tieu. There are floating restaurants with very experienced chefs. They
are ready to serve the most delicious dishes. 10
Exercise 13. Listen and choose the correct answer A, B, or C.
With 130 km of coastline, Binh Dinh has many fishing villages along the coastline. Life of the people in fishing villages here is simple and rustic.
Men are breadwinners. Most men go to sea and do the fishing. Women in the villages get up at dawn to wait for the fishing boats to come back.
They buy fresh sea products like shrimps, fish of various kinds and sell them for some little extra income. Others deal with the fishing nets and
prepare for the next fishing day. People work hard to earn a living and their life depends much on the weather and mother nature’s gifts - the sea lOMoAR cPSD| 44990377
products. If the sea is calm, they can catch more fish. If the sea is rough, they have a harder time. But people here love mother nature and live in
harmony with little competition and stress. UNIT 3: TEENAGERS 11

Exercise 11. Listen to a talk about baking and tick if each statement is true (T) or false (F).
An activity I particularly enjoy doing with my girl friends is baking. I often host a baking session every fortnight when my friends come to my
house, bake and chat. I first saw my mom bake when I was 8, but only started baking a cake of my own 4 years later, when I was 12. My mom
guides me on how to use the kitchen utensil, and how to work with the ingredients. For example, we need different methods for whipping cream and topping cream.
My favourite type of cake to bake is cheesecake. I always make cheesecake when it’s my friend’s birthday. I am also the one who takes care of
sweets when our class goes on picnics. But for those occasions, I bake cookies instead. Cookies are quicker to make in batch, and easier to carry compared to cheesecake. 14
Exercise 12. Listen and fill each blank with a missing word.
Hi kids, I’m Jennifer, and I have been an organiser at Phu Quoc Summer Camp for 3 years. Let me tell you, we will participate in a lot of

and improve greatly in your English during this time!
Now, first I want to talk to you about a typical day here. The wake-up call will be at 8 AM every day. When you hear the alarm, wake up and
prepare for morning activities. All team exercises will include physical strengths for us to warm up a little bit. At nine o’clock, we’ll meet in the
field and we’ll raise the flag. Breakfast is at nine fifteen in the Hall. After that, different lessons involving music, drawing, pottery, and reading
club will be carried out before lunch. lOMoAR cPSD| 44990377 15

John: Hi Richard! I heard you play basketball quite well.
Richard: I have been playing for 5 years and I’m also looking for new teammates for my basketball club.
Marie: That’s great. You two should play together sometimes.
Richard: John, are you playing for any clubs?
John: Currently, I’m playing for my highschool basketball club. But I’m graduating soon so I have been looking for a few friends to play together and sharpen up some skills.
Richard: We can play together and see if we could form a club. (laugh)
Marie: Wow, you two seem to get along quite well. What about setting a date for the basketball play-off?
Richard: Next Saturday 9 a.m. at the City Sport Center. How does that sound, John?
John: Exactly the time I was about to suggest. See you there next Saturday then. MIDTERM TEST 1 16

Most of the Cham people live in the south central area of Viet Nam. Cham villages are usually comprised of only Cham. Most villages are small,
with no more than 300 people, and are located near a river or lake.
The Cham culture is diverse and rich. The birth of a Cham child is greeted by the family and community with great joy. The mothers nurse their
babies until they are two to four years old. At four, children have to feed, bathe, and be all by themselves. Shortly after that, they have to care for their younger siblings.
Most parents exercise great control over their children until they are married. Even after marriage, the influence of parents is strong. Children are
expected to show respect to their parents and elders, and will get punishment for any misbehaviour. Cham expresses pride in the fact that their
families have little conflict. 21
Exercise 13. Listen to the passage about ethnic minority groups in Viet Nam. Circle the correct answer A, B, C, or D for each question.
There are 54 ethnic minority groups in Viet Nam. About seven percent of them live in the highlands of Viet Nam. They are often called hill or
highland people. A unique treasure of these hill people is their folklore. A big part of their folklore is about their legendary heroes. These heroes
can be actual or fictional ancestors whose deeds and characteristics are passed down from generation to generation. The hill people nowadays
believe that many of these heroes have originated from particular clans. Their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren respect, even
worship, them not only as great people, but also as the founders of their tribal group. Another interesting part of hill people’s folklore relates to
stories of the spirits, landscape, animals, and plants of a group's environment. They explain their surroundings and natural phenomena like storms
and lightning. These explanations form part of their traditional religious beliefs and behaviours. lOMoAR cPSD| 44990377

Exercise 12. Listen to Zany talking about some of the English culture and traditions and decide if each of the following statements is T (True) or F (False).
Hi, I am British. I’d like to share with you some of the British culture, traditions and customs.
The first one is Cheese rolling. British people play it down Cooper’s Hill. They chase after the ball down the steep hill until they reach the finish line where the cheese awaits.
The second one is Morris Dancing. It is both art and history in motion. It usually involves dancing with sticks, handkerchiefs or swords in a local
style. People perform it on occasions such as during Christmas and New Year.
The third one is pub culture. People often gather in the pub for drinks and discussion after the daily grind. Most pubs take cash. And don’t forget to tip.
Another important custom is afternoon tea. It is often from 2 to 4 o’clock in the afternoon. The common afternoon tea includes selected teas,
traditional scones, simple sandwiches and petite cakes.
Queuing is also a custom for British people. It is unacceptable to speak to other people in line and to accept an offer from the person in front of you to go ahead of the line. 26

Mi: I heard that bowing custom in your country is very special.
Akiko: Yes, it is. A deep, and long bow indicates sincere respect while a small nod is more casual and informal. Bowing is not only used to greet,
but also to thank, apologise, make a request, or ask someone a favour. lOMoAR cPSD| 44990377 Mi: How about table manners?
Akiko: The most important table etiquette in Japan is saying phrases "itadaki-masu" before and "gochisou-sama" after a meal.
Mi: What do those phrases mean?
Akiko: People say these to thank for the meal and to indicate the beginning and ending of the meal.
Mi: I see. And is there any etiquette of passing food?
Akiko: Please, don’t directly pass food from your chopsticks to somebody else's chopsticks. It’s also interesting to know that it is usual in Japan to
make some slurping noises when eating noodles because people believe it makes the food taste better.
Mi: Yeah, interesting! I also appreciate your gift giving culture, the well-packed gifts and the special way to hand over the gift... UNIT 6: LIFESTYLES 27

Exercise 11. Listen to a speech. Circle the correct answer A, B, C or D for each question.
Besides paying attention to our health, we should also take care of the environment we live in. A good lifestyle includes good habits towards the
environment we live in. We are under-recycling in Vietnam, and we definitely should recycle more to protect our environment.
I see so many possibilities in recycling, and each could be done with easy steps. First, we should recycle the cans and bottles of drinks that we are
throwing away every day. Cans and bottles can be returned to the factory for washing and recycling purposes. Second, we should use less plastic.
I am happy to see a lot of companies nowadays using recyclable materials for their packaging. Thirdly, we should avoid fast fashion. It would be a
waste of time and resources to spend much on unnecessary items, and it would lead to an increase in waste in the future. 30
Exercise 12. Listen and fill each blank with a missing word.
Minh is a high school student in Hanoi’s High School for the Gifted. He usually starts his day at 6:30 A.M. He never skips breakfast. His favorite
meal for the morning is 2 boiled eggs and a slice of toast with peanut butter because it’s quick and easy to make. Minh cycles to school at 7:30
and his class starts at 8. After school, Minh returns home, has lunch, and takes a quick nap. In the afternoon, Minh usually goes to the gym on the
day he does not have extra classes. Later at night, after spending dinner time with his family, Minh does homework and if he finishes before 10
P.M, he would read some of his favourite science-fiction books or play video games for entertainment. lOMoAR cPSD| 44990377 31
Exercise 13. Listen to Minh and Phuong talking about their lifestyles and tick if each statement is true (T) or false (F).
Minh: Phuong, what are you up to this weekend?
Phuong: Hi Minh! I’m thinking of finishing my homework early on Friday, so that I can have time to go to the cinema and watch Mulan with my brother.
Minh: Mulan? Is that the movie from Walt Disney? I heard there is a live-action version coming, but I do not know if it will be released this
weekend, I thought it will come out next month.
Phuong: Yes. It’s a premiere show. My brother got gifted with two tickets.
Minh: I have watched the animated version of Mulan before, I find the script meaningful and engrossing.
Phuong: Walt Disney is actually pretty good at making these types of movies. And they have the budget to make both an animated version and a
live-action version of many movies that I like.
Minh: So are you a fan of Walt Disney Studio? Or do you like watching movies in general?
Phuong: I love watching movies in my free time. We spend a lot of time at school and in extra classes. I think it is reasonable to have hobbies to balance it out.
Minh: That is very true. Watching movies is a relaxing hobby and we can get meaningful messages from a movie.
Phuong: Totally. I can’t agree more. By the way, what are your hobbies?
Minh: I love playing sports, reading novels and making crafts. I am interested in origami.
Phuong: I love origami, too! It’s the thing I would do when I’m stressed apart from watching movies. Let’s make some origami together sometimes. Minh: Great idea. FIRST TERM TEST lOMoAR cPSD| 44990377 32

Exercise 11. Listen to a talk and tick if each statement is true (T) or false (F).
There are many activities that we teenagers can do to help protect the environment. Here are some suggestions for you to start!
First, go on a monthly ‘green team walk’ and clean up your own neighbourhood or street. This helps make your neighbourhood a better place to
live as well as remind others not to litter.
Second, spend more time playing outside. Outdoor activities are good for your health. They also help save energy. When you are outside, you do
not use lights and other electrical devices at home. Participating in outdoor activities gets you closer to nature and makes you appreciate natural resources around you.
The last suggestion may sound strange: collect rainwater. In houses with a garden, you can create some ways to collect and store rainwater. You
can use it to water the vegetables, flowers and plants in the garden or the ground. You can also use it to clean outdoor objects like the gate, the tables and chairs. 36
Exercise 12. Listen and complete each missing information with a word from the listening.
Pollution is a global issue. It happens almost everywhere. Many people think that the fight against pollution is the job of the adults and the
government. That is not true. Pollution is caused by very simple daily activities by anyone. When you throw a chips’ bag on the street, when you
run on wild plants and flowers, or when you are wasting resources like clean water and energy, you are polluting the environment. So please
change your mind and act now. Start by saving the resources around you. Turn the water tap tight when you stop using it. Turn off the lights, the
TV, or other electric devices when you are not using them. Stop littering your surroundings. Apply the 3Rs in your daily life. Take care of the
trees, plants, and flowers in your neighbourhood. Don’t dump rubbish into natural resources like rivers, lakes, land, or air. And remember to

Exercise 13. Listen to the conversation and choose the correct answer A, B, C, or D.
Hoa: Mum, don’t throw that old cooking pot away.
Mother: Why do you want to keep it?
Hoa: I will plant some flowers in it and put it on our balcony.
Mother: I will buy a new one for you. This pot is old and its colour is dull.
Hoa: No, mum. This is our class’s 3Rs project. We try to think of ways to reuse old objects in our homes. It helps protect the environment. Mother: How?
Hoa: We will use less energy and resources for manufacturing new things. That helps save our natural resources and reduce industrial waste.
Mother: Wow… Where did you get the idea?
Hoa: We have a club at the school where we learn to make objects from used things.
Mother: What else could you do?
Hoa: I can make a key holder or a Home Sweet Home board from a wooden broken chair.
Mother: Great. Let’s do it together. Hoa: Thank you, mum. UNIT 8: SHOPPING 38
