What is Sports Tourism?
Sports tourism is travelling from one region, country, state, etc. to engage or participate in a
sports-related activity. Sports tourism combines the passion for sports with the desire to
experience new experiences or destinations.
While sports tourism has not always been extremely popular, it is definitely on the rise. A
recent report estimates the value of the global sports tourism market was $587.87 billion in
2022. The industry is expected to grow at a rate of 17.5% through 2030. The popularity of
events like the Olympic Games, the NBA, and the FIFA World Cup have contributed to this
growth. While these events have economic short-term benefits for an area, they can be a
catalyst for longer-term tourism development opportunities.
In 2004, the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) and the International Olympic Committee
(IOC) issued a joint statement that illustrates the strong dynamic between sports and
tourism, “Tourism and sports are interrelated and complementary. Sport - as a professional,
amateur or leisure activity - involves a considerable amount of travelling to play and
compete in different destinations and countries. Major sporting events, such as the Olympic
Games, football and rugby championships and auto racing have become powerful tourism
attractions in themselves - making a very positive contribution to the tourism image of the
host destination”.

VIII. Read the following passage and mark letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions that follow.
It is a common saying that we do not fully value a thing until we lose it. We often value
the love and worth of a friend when he has been taken from us by death more than when he
was with US in the flesh; it is only when we have left school or college that we understand
the greatness of our opportunity of education, which has gone forever; and it is the sick and
the ailing who realize the value of good health, when we are young and strong, we cannot
imagine what it is to be weak and ailing. We are so used to vigorous health that we take it
for granted. The organs of our body work so smoothly that we scarcely know we have lungs
and liver, heart and stomach. But when any of these gets upset and gives us pain and
sickness, we learn by bitter experience what an unspeakable blessing it is to be well.
Loss of health makes us miserable, and a burden to ourselves and our friends. It
cripples our efforts so that we cannot accomplish many of the good and great things we
might have done. It spoils our life. What must we do to keep our health?
We must be moderate in eating and drinking and wise in the choice of plain,
wholesome simple food. Gluttony has killed thousands, and strong drink tens of thousands.
We must, when young, get plenty of sleep, which is "nature's sweet restorer", and not try to
burn the candle at both ends. We must live as much as possible in the open air and keep our
rooms well ventilated. We must get sufficient and regular physical exercise, and keep our
bodies clean. And we must avoid bad habits and secret sins as we avoid the devil, and keep
our thoughts clean and our bodies pure. Our ideal must be the sound mind in the sound body.

the rest of their lives. When they work, they have to manage both the job and schoolwork.
To be able to do so, they must be very organized and able to keep a sensible schedule. They
also learn to cope with the job stress apart from the stress of the schoolwork. Some of the
most stressful jobs include teaching, nursing, and police work. These skills help prepare
teenagers for their later careers. High school students who work are more likely to succeed
as adults than people who enter the job market at a later age with no work
experience. Teenagers want a lot of expensive things: clothes, mp3 players, trips with their
friends, etc. Not all parents can afford them. And even if they can, the teens might not really
appreciate that money because they did not earn it. When teenagers make money for
themselves, they know its true and are less likely to spend it foolishly.

Do you know what it means to be optimistic? Being optimistic means having a positive
outlook on life. It means looking at the bright side of things, even when times are tough.
Optimistic people believe that things will work out for the best, and they try to find
solutions to problems instead of dwelling on the negatives.
Being optimistic can have many benefits. It helps us stay motivated and hopeful, even
when faced with challenges. Optimistic people tend to be in a better mood, which can lead
Trang 15
to better relationships with others. They are also more resilient and better equipped to
handle setbacks.
Let's look at an example. Imagine you have a big test coming up, and you haven't had
much time to study. An optimistic person would think, "Even though I didn't have much
time to study, I'll do my best and see what happens. I can always learn from my mistakes
and do better next time." This positive mindset helps them stay calm and focused during the
test, increasing their chances of success.
Now, being optimistic doesn't mean ignoring reality or pretending that everything is
perfect. It simply means choosing to focus on the positive aspects of a situation and
believing in one's ability to overcome challenges.

Games, football and rugby championships and auto racing have become powerful tourism
attractions
in themselves - making a very positive contribution to the tourism image of the host destination”.

In the recent survey, more than 80% of American high school students work at part-time
jobs in the evenings, on weekends or in summer. These part-time jobs bring teenagers great advantages.
One of the benefits of the work is the students can learn the skills that will be useful for
the rest of their lives.

Optimistic people tend to be in a better mood, which can lead Trang 14
to better relationships with others. They are also more resilient and better equipped to handle setbacks.
