Living in the stressful modern era, most of us usually look for sources of relaxation,
and it’s no secret that viewing nature and being outdoors can be pleasant and restorative.
Spending time in nature is linked to improvements in mental health, mood, emotional well –
being, and cognitive benefits. However, the more surprising thing is that, according to new
research, viewing water may be a better environment for relaxation than green areas with grass and trees.
In a recent article, Harvard psychologist Adam Grant discussed a remarkable 2024
study that he came across, showing that people who viewed water for less than two minutes
had reduced blood pressure compared to people who viewied green areas and trees.
So why are nature’s blue spaces more relaxing than green ones? According to the
original authors of the study, the reason might be related to the process of our evolution. For
early humans who have to work hard to survive day by day, the lack of water has always been
a major challenge, as it posed a direct threat to life, leading to heightened levels of stress,
increases in blood pressure and cardiac stress. Therefore, successfully detecting water or
simply just looking at it can provide a sense of great relief.
Being in nature can help you re – invigorate your body, mind, and spirit, offering
moments of awe, calm, and relaxation. And now we are learning that bodies of water
may bring even greater relaxation. So, whether it's a river, lake, or ocean, it might be time to
go outside and find the nearest blue space to experience the effects for yourself!

answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 31 to 40.
Six months after the UN officially recognized the human right to a healthy environment,
a report by UN Special Rapporteur David Boyd underscores the harsh reality that this right
remains inaccessible to many, particularly the most vulnerable populations worldwide. Boyd’s
report identifies “sacrifice zones,” regions where pollution from industrial activities has
rendered the air, water, and soil toxic, exposing local communities to severe health risks like
cancer, lead poisoning, and respiratory diseases.
Globally, there are thousands of such zones. For instance, Bor, Serbia, ranks among
Europe’s most polluted cities due to its copper mining and smelting industries, leaving 80% of
its metallurgical workers with chronic illnesses. In La Oroya, Peru, nearly all children living
near a lead smelter show dangerously high blood lead levels. Similarly, in the oil-contaminated
Niger Delta of Nigeria, life expectancy hovers around just 40 years. These regions reflect the
dire costs of prioritizing industrial progress over environmental health.
Boyd’s findings emphasize the role of corporate practices in exacerbating these crises.
[I] Major polluters, including leading fossil fuel companies, continue profiting massively while
contributing to pollution and climate change. [II] During the energy crisis in 2022, six such
corporations amassed $350 billion in profits. [III] Simultaneously, lobbying and greenwashing
tactics hinder the enactment of strict environmental laws, enabling the persistence of these toxic zones. [IV]
Governments also bear responsibility for failing to counteract these influences.
Corporate lobbying and the absence of enforceable environmental regulations perpetuate these
issues, as evidenced by recent climate negotiations that yielded weak commitments. Boyd
advocates for bold action, including legally binding frameworks to hold corporations
accountable, criminalizing greenwashing, and reducing corporate influence in policymaking. Trang 5
Such measures are critical for turning the human right to a healthy environment from principle
to practice, safeguarding both people and the planet

Read the following passage about the impact of tweeting on everybody and mark the letter A, B, C or
D on your answer sheet to indicate the option that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 18 to 22 EVERYBODY’S TWEETING
Twitter (18) ________________ for a podcasting website, but then people realized that it
offered them the power to connect with millions of people instantly. Suddenly, everyone had a voice,
as long as it wasn’t longer than 140 characters. But what are we using it for, and just how is Twitter
changing the way we do things?
Perhaps the greatest impact Twitter has had is on breaking news. Before Twitter, (19) _____________
before finally broadcasting it on the radio or TV. These days, anyone who happens to be in the right
place at the right time with a Twitter account can post news the second it happens. For example, Janis
Krums posted a photo and a tweet when he witnessed a US flight making an emergency landing in the
Hudson River. He must never have imagined that he would break the story to the world. Following Pop Idols
Young people have always loved to follow their pop idols, and Twitter has made it a whole lot
easier. Before the Internet, teenagers used to join the fan clubs of their favorite bands and write letters to their heroes,
(20) _________________ to get a reply written by the club secretary. Today’s teenagers don’t need to
wait. By following their idols on Twitter, they get all the news the minute it happens: their meals,
activities, or even thoughts. And all the news comes directly from the bands themselves. Creating Movements
Twitter allows people who think the same way to get together and (21) ______________.
These problems may be cyberbullying, sexism, or racism. They can share information, organize
campaigns, and put pressure on related departments. Twitter has given the man and woman on the
street the power to make a difference.
Identifying the source of a piece of news
It’s good to get an idea of the background of a person who says or writes something. Are they
an impartial expert or someone who wants to change your opinion to suit their own agenda? For
example, this statement about a flu epidemic, “Patients can already spread the virus a day before
they’ve even fallen sick themselves”, is more likely to come from a doctor than a politician. On the
other hand, “We have to stop people who are carrying the virus from getting into the country” is more
likely to come from a politician. (22) _____________, you’re better able to decide how much
importance to give it and whether you can really trust what they say.

Read the following passage about home schooling in the UK and mark the letter A, B, C or D on
your answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 23 to 30.
Full-time education in the UK is compulsory from the age of five to sixteen, but this doesn’t
have to be in a school. Around 50,000 children are educated at home. This is called ‘homeschooling’.
Parents take their children out of school for different reasons, like illness and the need for
special care, or because the distance to the nearest school may be too far. Some children are simply
unhappy at school. Whatever the reason, they’re allowed to study at home, although inspectors
regularly check how they are getting on.
Hayley and Jenny haven’t been to school for two years but they haven’t neglected their
studies. Their mother worked out strict timetables for them, with hourly lessons for each day. She’s
responsible for teaching them Maths, English, History and French. Their father teaches them Science
and Geography. They study all the other school subjects online. ‘We have lessons with Dad in the
evenings and at weekends,’ explains Hayley.
The family’s home is in a remote part of Wales. ‘The girls were fine at school but they spent
so much time getting to school, they were too tired to learn, says their mother, Julia”. ‘We had a
family conference and in the end we decided to try homeschooling. So far, it’s been a big success, but
the girls know that if they want to go back to school at any time, we’ll let them. We follow the normal
school program of lessons, and they will take all the normal school exams.’
There are disadvantages too, of course. ‘Social isolation is something I worry about,’ says
Julia. They both seem happy and well-adjusted, but they haven’t really got friends who live locally.
But in the summer holidays they go away on trips to summer camps, where they have no trouble
mixing with people and making friends.’ (Adapted from Focus) Trang 11

C. Julia, their mother, points out that the girls did badly in school because the long journey

this type of equipment isn’t something you would typically have at home, you’ll need to visit a
specialized Pilates center to try it. [III] While it might look easy at first, don’t be fooled - by the
end of the session, your thighs will be burning, and you might struggle to walk up or down stairs
for a few days afterward. [IV] This workout pushes your body to its limits, providing a more
challenging experience than standard Pilates, and many find it an effective way to build both strength and flexibility. Trang 12
Trampolining is another popular fitness trend, and although it may seem like child's play, it’s
actually a highly effective workout. Jumping up and down on a trampoline can leave you feeling
exhausted after just a few minutes. Surprisingly, it’s even better for heart health than running, while
also improving coordination and helping to reduce stress levels. Trampolining is gaining widespread
popularity, with new centers popping up that feature as many as 150 trampolines. These facilities
offer options for everyone: you can enjoy 'freejumping, where you bounce without an instructor, or
pay for professional lessons to learn the best techniques and get the most out of your workout. Many
people are discovering that trampolining combines fun and fitness in a way that makes staying active much more enjoyable.
If you're someone who is typically active but feeling down or emotionally drained, Dynamic
Running Therapy might be just what the doctor ordered. This trend involves running with a
therapist, combining the benefits of physical exercise with talk therapy. Though these sessions are
often more expensive than typical therapy sessions because of the professional fees, they offer
significant advantages. Running while talking helps distract you from any discomfort, allowing you to
cover longer distances, and creates a relaxed, open environment that can make it easier to talk
compared to the usual therapist’s office setting.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
best answer to each of the following questions from 23 to 30.
Happiness is a universal goal, yet its ingredients differ across societies and cultures. For some,
safety and security are paramount, as demonstrated by Singapore. Known for its strict laws and highly
regulated environment, Singapore provides a clean, orderly, and safe place for its citizens. The
government ensures access to basic necessities such as housing and healthcare, significantly reducing Trang 18
poverty and promoting equality. While personal freedoms may be limited, many Singaporeans find
satisfaction in the stability and quality of life their country offers, showing that happiness can stem from collective security.
In contrast, Mexico highlights the importance of social connections in achieving happiness.
Despite challenges like poverty and limited access to essential resources, Mexicans often prioritize
relationships with family, friends, and neighbors. Simple acts like sharing meals or gathering in the
community foster a sense of belonging and emotional well-being. Psychologists have long noted that
feeling part of a larger social group can be a powerful source of happiness, even when material wealth
is scarce. For them, the joy derived from relationships often outweighs material concerns.
The role of money in happiness, however, is often debated. In Mexico, many individuals live in
similar financial conditions, reducing the pressure of economic competition. When neighbors lack
expensive possessions, individuals are less likely to feel dissatisfied with their own circumstances.
This suggests that relative wealth and equality may have a stronger influence on happiness than absolute income.
Ultimately, there is no universal recipe for happiness. Factors like security, freedom, social
bonds, and financial equality all play a role, but their importance varies depending on individual and
cultural values. Happiness, therefore, remains a deeply personal and multifaceted pursuit, shaped by
our unique perspectives and circumstances. (Adapted from Pathways)

Read the following passage about The Longitude Prize and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your
answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions
On a stormy night in 1707, four ships struck rocks off the south coast of England and sank. [I]
One thousand, four hundred sailors were drowned. [II] The ships had crashed because they had no way
of knowing how far they had travelled in a particular direction; they could not calculate their
longitude, which required accurate time measurement. [III] In such difficult circumstances, they
believed that the best response to the disaster was a competition: the Longitude Prize. [IV]
The Longitude Prize was no ordinary competition. To win it, someone had to find a way of
calculating how far a ship had travelled east or west from its point of departure. Geniuses such as Sir
Isaac Newton had failed to find a solution, so to ensure the interest of Britain’s greatest scientific
minds, the government offered a prize of £20,000 — the equivalent of £2.6 million in today’s money.
But to everyone’s surprise, it wasn’t a famous academic who solved the problem, but an unknown carpenter.
When John Harrison wasn’t working with wood, he was making clocks. An accurate clock
would allow sailors to calculate their position, but at the time it was thought impossible to create a
mechanical clock that could work on a ship. The movement of the sea and the changes in temperature
destroyed the delicate parts. However, after three frustrated attempts, Harrison’s fourth sea clock, H4,
finally triumphed. Its mechanics were so good that the H4 worked better than most clocks on land.
The Longitude Prize and Harrison’s success generated a lot of interest in the 18th century, but
it was soon forgotten. However, in 2013, the British government created a new Longitude Prize,
offering £10 million to the person who could solve a great challenge to humanity. An enthralled
public then took part in a TV programme where viewers chose one challenge from a list of six for
scientists to focus on. The question now is, will someone be able to solve it just as well as Harrison
solved the challenge presented to him? (Adapted from Friends Global)
