Part 2: Read the following passage and do tasks 1-2 below. ( 14pts.)
A. Every year it is estimated that roughly 5.2 million hectares (52,000 km
2
) of forest is lost worldwide. That is
a net figure, meaning it represents the area of forest not replaced. To put this size in context, that is an area
of land the size of Croatia lost every single year. There are a wide range of negative effects from deforestation
that range from the smallest biological processes right up to the health of our planet as a whole. On a human
level, millions of lives are affected every year by flooding and landslides that often result from deforestation.
B There are 5 million people living in areas deemed at risk of flooding in England and Wales. Global warming,
in part worsened by deforestation, is responsible for higher rainfalls in Britain in recent decades. Although it
can be argued that demand for cheap housing has meant more houses are being built in at-risk areas, the
extent of the flooding is increasing. The presence of forests and trees along streams and rivers acts like a net.
The trees catch and store water, but also hold soil together, preventing erosion. By removing the trees, land is
more easily eroded increasing the risk of landslides and also, after precipitation, less water is intercepted when
trees are absent and so more enters rivers, increasing the risk of flooding.
C. It is well documented that forests are essential to the atmospheric balance of our planet, and therefore our
own wellbeing too. Scientists agree unequivocally that global warming is a real and serious threat to our
planet. Deforestation releases 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions. One third of the carbon dioxide emissions
created by human activity come from deforestation around the globe.
D. In his book
Collapse,
about the disappearance of various ancient civilisations, writer Jared Diamond
theorises about the decline of the natives of Easter Island. European missionaries first arrived on the island in
1722. Research suggested that the island, whose population was in the region of two to three thousand at the
time, had once been much higher at fifteen thousand people. This small native population survived on the
island despite there being no trees at all. Archaeological digs uncovered evidence of trees once flourishing on
the island. The uncontrolled deforestation not only led to the eradication of all such natural resources from the
island, but also greatly impacted the number of people the island could sustain. This underlines the importance
of forest management, not only for useful building materials, but also food as well.
E. Forestry management is important to make sure that stocks are not depleted and that whatever is cut down
is replaced. Without sustainable development of forests the levels of deforestation are only going to worsen as
the global population continues to rise, creating higher demand for the products of forests. Just as important
though is consumer awareness. Simple changes in consumer activity can make a huge difference. These
changes in behaviour include, but are not limited to, recycling all recyclable material; buying recycled products
and looking for the FSC sustainably sourced forest products logo on any wood or paper products.
F. Japan is often used as a model of exemplary forest management. During the Edo period between 1603 and
1868 drastic action was taken to reverse the country’s serious exploitative deforestation problem. Whilst the
solution was quite complex, one key aspect of its success was the encouragement of cooperation between
villagers. This process of collaboration and re-education of the population saved Japan’s forests. Accordingto
the World Bank 68.5% of Japanese land area is covered by forest, making it one of the best performing
economically developed nations in this regard.
G. There is of course a negative impact of Japan’s forest management. There is still a high demand for wood
products in the country, and the majority of these resources are simply imported from other, poorer nations.
Indonesia is a prime example of a country that has lost large swaths of its forest cover due to foreign demand
from countries like Japan. This is in addition to other issues such as poor domestic forest management,
weaker laws and local corruption. Located around the Equator, Indonesia has an ideal climate for rainforest.
Sadly much of this natural resource is lost every year. Forest cover is now down to less than 51% from 65.4%
in 1990. This alone is proof that more needs to be done globally to manage forests.
H. China is leading the way in recent years for replenishing their forests. The Chinese government began the
Three-North Shelter Forest Program in 1978, with aims to complete the planting of a green wall, measuring
2,800 miles in length by its completion in 2050. Of course this program is in many ways forced by nature
itself; the expansion of the Gobi Desert threatened to destroy thousands of square miles of grassland annually
through desertification. This is a process often exacerbated by deforestation in the first place, and so
represents an attempt to buck the trend. Forested land in China rose from 17% to 22% from 1990 to 2015
Đề thi thành lp đội tuyn lp 12 d thi HSGQG-Môn Tiếng Anh- 2017_2018 Trang 6
making China one of the few developing nations to reverse the negative trend.
Task 1: Choose the correct heading for each paragraph from the list of headings below.
Write the correct number, i-xi, in boxes 11-18 on your answer sheet.
i. Atmospheric impacts
ii. Ideal forestry management example
iii. No trees, less people
iv. Good uses for wood
v. Looking after the forests
vi. Numbers of lost trees
vii. Wasted water
viii. Replanting forests
ix. Happy trees
x. Flood risks
xi. Poorer nations at higher risk
Task 2: Choose
NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER
from the passage for each blank in
the summary below.
The effects of deforestation are widespread and various. Some examples include flooding at a local scale to
the wider effects of global warming on a worldwide scale. In Britain, for example (19) ______ people live in
areas at risk of flooding. This risk is increased by deforestation. Trees catch and (20) ______ water lowering
the chance of flooding. By removing trees land erosion is alos higher, increasing the chance of (21) ______ .
Deforestation also affects global warming by contributing 15% of the (22) ______ of green house gasses. To
make sure that the cutting down of trees is done in a sustainable way, good forestry (23) ______ is important.
In most countries more trees are cut down every year than planted. One country that is reversing this trend is
China, making it one of the few nations to (24) ______ the more common negative trend.
Part 3: Read the passage and choose the correct answer for each question that follows. (12pts.)
In the early- to mid-1990s, Lance Armstrong was on the up-and-up. Success seemed to be written in his stars;
he notched up a stage win at the '93 Tour de France, then another in '95. This cyclist was clearly coming of
age in the sport, and he was, at 24 on reg-istering his second tour win, still a relative baby in cycling terms -
most of his career lay ahead of him. Then, just when it looked like he would conquer all before him, his '96
tour was cut disappointingly short due to illness. And, as it would soon emerge, this was no ordinary illness;
Armstrong had testicu-lar cancer. Fans were aghast and there was an out-pouring of sympathy for him.
But Armstrong would need more than goodwill to get through this. The cancer had metastasized to the lungs
and the brain. The prognosis was not at all good. Months of spirit- and body-breaking chemotherapy followed
and a delicate surgical procedure to remove the malignancies on his brain was performed, Cycling mourned
the surely permanent loss to the sport of one of its most promising young disciples. But Armstrong wasn't
finished yet.
In 1998, he made a remarkable, defiant and inspirational return to cycling and competed in the Tour de
France again the following year. But surely his would now only he a cameo role; after all, what could one
expect from a cancer survivor with a compromised liver and the other familiar scars of cancer therapy? Except
Armstrong had other ideas.
Four stage wins later, the legend of Armstrong was born; he had claimed the Tour and defied the odds in the
most emphatic of manners. His victory represented not just his announcement as a force in cycling, but as a
force for hope for millions of cancer sufferers the world over. Indeed, Armstrong threw himself into
campaigning for his newly-established cancer foundation. Livestrong - so much so that he metamorphosed
into a sort of human-embodiment of the cause - he became the cause, and his annual battle with the French
Alps came to represent the struggle against the deadly disease. So long as Lance could succeed, there was
hope.
Đề thi thành lp đội tuyn lp 12 d thi HSGQG-Môn Tiếng Anh- 2017_2018 Trang 7
And succeed he did, beyond the wildest expectations of even the most optimistic of his supporters, amassing a
further six titles - so seven in consecution - before he retired in 2005. His achievements were simply
remarkable; his story absorbing; his book a must-read for all cancer sufferers - their ray of hope; proof that
hopefulness should never fade and that sanguinity can and does make light of the odds - the tunnel, though
long and at times excruciating to pass through, has an end, and it is a happy one -the light is in sight.
After his seventh victory, he retired and the sporting world entered congratulatory mode, writing his eulogies.
But Armstrong had one more surprise for us; he wasn't finished yet. There were whispers of a comeback,
confirmed in 2009, and so it was that the legend would ride again.
But the renewed focus on him wasn't all good; there were whispers of another kind, too; sources, some
credible, were claiming he had had an illicit ally all through his exploits; he was, they claimed, in bed with the
syringe. Our champion laughed off and dismissed these claims but the rumours persisted and a cloud began to
form over his legacy. Surely Armstrong could not have earned his victories clean, some said.
We may never know for sure. Fast-forward to 2012 and despite an abandoned federal case, those sharpening
their knives for Armstrong seem to have finally nabbed him; ASADA, the U.S. body tasked with cracking clown
on drug offenders charged Armstrong with doping and the trafficking of drugs - and some say his failure to
contest is indicative of his guilt. At any rate, because he pleaded no-contest, he will now be stripped of all his
titles; his legacy has been pulled from under him.
And yet he has not, and now may never be tried, so we have not seen the evidence against him. We do not
know if he is guilty or innocent, and it still remains fact that he never failed an official drugs test. Did he
cheat? Does it matter? Does anyone care? Time may tell, but for now, though his legacy is tainted, his legend,
in the eyes of many of his loyal supporters, lives on.

PART 4. You are going to read an extract from an article. Seven paragraphs have been removed
from the extract. Choose from the paragraphs A-H the one which fits each gap (31-37). There is
one extra paragraph you do not need to use. Mark your answers on the answer sheet.(14pts.)
A drive through a phobia
Motorways are the safest roads in Britain. I read that somewhere not long ago - and a fat lot of good it's done
me. For I am slowly surrendering to a terror of motor-way driving. Just a glimpse of the sign that warns
"Motorway Traffic Only" and I feel as if I am about to fall off the edge of the Earth.
(31).______
I will even convince myself that this makes more sense that, really, the route through a strange town in rush
hour is quicker, that there is bound to be a hold-up on the more obvious routes.
(32). ______
Until recently, the open road never used to be a problem. I have driven across America and back. I have
driven across Malaysia. I have been a night-time minicab driver, speeding across London and the Home
Counties in the hours before dawn, I have even negotiated North America's Long Island Expressway in hot
summer rush hours. But now I cannot get myself onto the M25.
(33). ______
My GP was the obvious starting point, but the procedure involves a referral, a wait of weeks, possibly months,
and then a month or two of weekly visits to a clinical psychologist. A friend suggested driving lessons might do
the trick.
(34). ______
But that's nothing to do with the phobia - which left two or more esoteric American treatments to sample.
First, I visited Frank Gerryts in Twickenham, west London, who uses the new "emotional freedom technique".
"EFT is to do with releasing energy blocks", said Gerryts. 'A phobia is a learnt response. At some stage, you
have to learn to be scared of whatever it is. You learn quickly and remember forever. But you can also unlearn
it."
(35). ______
"Your phobia is like a forest: each tree is an aspect of it," said Gerryts. "If you focus in on a tree and cut it
down, eventually, you've cleared a space, cut down enough of those trees and suddenly they aren't a
problem." And that's all there is to it. It's quick, easy - and supporters claim a near-I00% success rate. It
would be marvellous: except, in my case, it did no good at all.
(36).______
NLP started in the late 1970s in America. "It is out-come-orientated", said Bean. "It will give you a clear idea
of what you want and help you achieve it. NLP can help us become who we want to be." I wanted to be a
person who drives on motorways.
Bean made me imagine I was sitting in a cinema seat. Then I left my body in the seat and took my mind to
the projectionist's booth, from where I watched a film of myself driving on a motorway, in colour and in black
and white, forward and backward. After that, I felt i could handle Spaghetti junction in a wet, dark rush hour.
Sadly, when faced with the M40 in drizzle, I decided to leave it for another day. I did not really want to go to
Banbury anyway.
(37). ______
As a life disrupter, a fear of driving on motorways doesn't come close to a fear of buttons or police officers.
And driving phobias, says Blowers, are relatively simple to treat. So, once I have overcome my phobia about
paying him 90 pounds an hour, for up to I0 sessions of 90 minutes or so, he's the man for me. Until then, I
can always take a train. After all, it's better for the environment.
Đề thi thành lp đội tuyn lp 12 d thi HSGQG-Môn Tiếng Anh- 2017_2018 Trang 9
A. Next I tried the NLP (neurolinguistic programming) phobic cure. This, said Gary Bean, whom I visited in
Teddington, southwest London, is "fast, so straightforward it can be taken up by anyone and 100%
successful."
B. These are all classic signs of a phobia: a usually irrational fear or hatred of some sort. My terror of the M-
word certainly does not seem rational, even to me - you are three times as likely to get killed on an A-road,
despite nearly 9,000 motorway crashes involving injury each year. Brampton wrote about her fear of driving in
Vogue magazine. What a revelation! I tentatively mentioned.
C This fear crept up slowly so I hardly noticed it happen. Then, a few months ago, a friend of mine, Sally, said
the same thing had happened to her, and, suddenly, it felt like everyone had the same problem or knew
somebody who did. So, like one in 10 of the population, I had a phobia. Nobody knows for sure how or why
they start, but once I had acknowledged my condition, I was ready to go in search of a cure.
D. I suppose some people have a fear of driving abroad. That is a more logical phobia as one is unfamiliar
with a foreign country. I personally have never tried driving abroad, but as long as it wasn't on a motorway, I
suppose I'd cope.
E. Eventually, I rang the Priory, refuge of the confused, depressed and addicted, in Putney, London. Colin
Blowers, a behavioural therapist, offered words of comfort and a "reasonably high success rate" through
gradual exposure, starting by just sitting in a car or even, in severe cases, standing near one. Eventually he
will follow people as they drive onto a motorway, or talk them through it by mobile phone.
F. The thought of trying to join that relentless stream of thundering traffic gives me the creeps thumping
heart, cold shivers, sweaty palms. My hands actually slip on the wheel before I bottle out at the last second,
turning with relief back to the nice, safe A-road, with all its comforting delays and frustrations.
G. Bryan Lynn, the chief examiner of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, agreed, "People who aren't used to
motorway driving can be a little intimidated by the speed and the volume of the traffic", he said. "They need
to go out with someone who understands, to ease them through it," But this doesn't explain why it suddenly
develops. I asked what sort of person is typically frightened of six-lane highways. "Ladies in later middle age'',
came the horrible reply."Hubby has unfortunately passed away, and hubby has always driven the car."
H. Together, we chose an aspect of my fear (getting on the slip road) and then, while rubbing a spot on my
chest, I had to repeat the following three times: "Even though I have this fear of slip roads, I deeply and
completely accept myself," This concentrates the mind. Then you have to tap your face and your collarbone
while repeating the bit about the snip road. If any emotional intensity remains, you repeat the whole lot before
picking another aspect of the problem.

The Mayas developed the only pre-Columbian penmanship in the Americas and devised an intricate astronomy

Mexican and American archaeologists have recently (16)_______ (VEIL) a monumental art work that may
give some clues to their sudden disappearance. While digging at Palenque, in the Yucatan peninsula, the
researchers stumbled on a bench-like throne more than 2.8m wide and 1.7m deep in vermilion-painted
limestone. The archaeologists say the grandeur of the throne and the spaciousness of the palace that houses
it indicate the fact that the last rulers of Palenque were more ambitious and powerful than had once been
thought. The throne itself was built in about AD 760 by one of the last Mayan rulers and is (17)_______

Part 3: The passage below contains 8 errors. Point out the errors and write the corrections in the
corresponding numbered boxes in the answer sheet.
Line 1
The world of fashion is not easy to comprehend. With their haute couture designers, its catwalks, its Line 2
sylph-like models and glitzy clothes that most of us would not be seen dead in - even if we could Line 3
afford them - it is hard to believe that it has something to do with the real world. It is difficult to Line 4
understand the motives behind fashion, and to fathom what it has got to do with us in our Line 5
everyday lives. The vast majority of us, however, is affected to varying degrees by fashion and, Line 6
in reflection, we can conclude that this is because of a basic desire we possess to conform within Line 7
our social group. Ever since people started to cover their bodies, they tended to conform in Line 8
the way that they do so, and thus it would be logical to say that fashion has existed in the Line 9
word go. Most of us live and socialize in groups make up of our peers, and we dress according to Line 10
the rules of the group. Looking the same as our peer group could well be a remnant of a survival Line 11
strategy which guaranteed solidarity and protection for look-alikes. This tendency of conformity Line 12

Part 2: Read the following passage and do tasks 1-2 below. ( 14pts.)
A.
Every year it is estimated that roughly 5.2 million hectares (52,000 km2) of forest is lost worldwide. That is
a net figure, meaning it represents the area of forest not replaced.
D. In his book Collapse, about the disappearance of various ancient civilisations, writer Jared Diamond
theorises about the decline of the natives of Easter Island.
Forested land in China rose from 17% to 22% from 1990 to 2015
Đề thi thành lập đội tuyển lớp 12 dự thi HSGQG-Môn Tiếng Anh- 2017_2018 Trang 5
making China one of the few developing nations to reverse the negative trend.
Task 1: Choose the correct heading for each paragraph from the list of headings below.
Write the correct number, i-xi, in boxes 11-18 on your answer sheet.
i. Atmospheric impacts
ii. Ideal forestry management example iii. No trees, less people iv. Good uses for wood v. Looking after the forests vi. Numbers of lost trees vii. Wasted water viii. Replanting forests ix. Happy trees x. Flood risks
xi. Poorer nations at higher risk
Task 2: Choose NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER from the passage for each blank in the summary below.
(12pts.)
In the early- to mid-1990s, Lance Armstrong was on the up-and-up. Success seemed to be written in his stars;
he notched up a stage win at the '93 Tour de France, then another in '95. This cyclist was clearly coming of
age in the sport, and he was, at 24 on reg-istering his second tour win, still a relative baby in cycling terms -
most of his career lay ahead of him. Then, just when it looked like he would conquer all before him, his '96
tour was cut disappointingly short due to illness. And, as it would soon emerge, this was no ordinary illness;
But Armstrong wasn't finished yet.
In 1998, he made a remarkable, defiant and inspirational return to cycling and competed in the Tour de
France again the following year. But surely his would now only he a cameo role; after all, what could one
expect from a cancer survivor with a compromised liver and the other familiar scars of cancer therapy? Except Armstrong had other ideas.
So long as Lance could succeed, there was hope.
Đề thi thành lập đội tuyển lớp 12 dự thi HSGQG-Môn Tiếng Anh- 2017_2018 Trang 6

I will even convince myself that this makes more sense – that, really, the route through a strange town in rush
hour is quicker, that there is bound to be a hold-up on the more obvious routes. (32).
A friend suggested driving lessons might do the trick. (34).
But you can also unlearn it." (35).
I did not really want to go to Banbury anyway. (37).
Đề thi thành lập đội tuyển lớp 12 dự thi HSGQG-Môn Tiếng Anh- 2017_2018 Trang 8
A. Next I tried the NLP (neurolinguistic programming) phobic cure. This, said Gary Bean, whom I visited in
Teddington, southwest London, is "fast, so straightforward it can be taken up by anyone — and 100% successful."
Then, a few months ago, a friend of mine, Sally, said
the same thing had happened to her, and, suddenly, it felt like everyone had the same problem — or knew
somebody who did.
I personally have never tried driving abroad, but as long as it wasn't on a motorway, I suppose I'd cope.
F. The thought of trying to join that relentless stream of thundering traffic gives me the creeps — thumping
heart, cold shivers, sweaty palms.
