The biologist’s role in society as well as his moral and ethical responsibility in the discovery
and development of new ideas has led to a reassessment of his social and scientific value systems. A
scientist can no longer ignore the consequences of his discoveries; he is as concerned the possible
misuses of his findings as he is with the basic research in which he is involved. This emerging
social and political role of the biologist and all other scientists requires a weighing of values that
cannot be done with the accuracy or the objectivity of a laboratory balance. As a member of society,
it is necessary for a biologist now to redefine his social obligations and his functions, particularly in
the realm of making judgments about such ethical problems as man’s control of his environment or
his manipulation of genes to direct further evolutionary development.
As a result of recent discoveries concerning hereditary mechanisms, genetic engineering, by
which human traits are made to order, may soon be a reality. As desirable as it may seem to be,
such an accomplishment would entail many value judgments. Who would decide, for example,
which traits should be selected for change? In case of genetic deficiencies and diseases, the
desirability of the change is obvious, but the possibilities for social misuse are so numerous that
they may far outweigh the benefits.
Probably the greatest biological problem of the future, as it is of the present, will be to find
ways to curb environmental pollution without interfering with man’s constant efforts to improve the
quality of his life. Many scientists believe that underlying the spectra of pollution is the problem of
surplus human population. A rise in population necessitates an increase in the operations of modern
industry, the waste products of which increase the pollution of air, water, and soil. The question of
how many people the resources of the Earth can support is one of critical importance.
Although the solutions to these and many other problems are yet to be found, they do indicate
the need for biologists to work with social scientists and other members of society in order to
determine the requirements necessary for maintaining a healthy and productive planet. For although
many of man’s present and future problems may seem to be essentially social, political, or
economic in nature, they have biological ramifications that could affect the very existence of life itself.

Childhood is the time when there are (1)_________ responsibilities to make life difficult. If a
child has good parents, he is (2)________ , looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is
improbable that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in
return. In (3)________, life is always presenting new things to the child- things that have lost their
interest for older people because they are too well- known. A child finds pleasure playing in the
rain, or in the snow. His first visit to the seaside is a marvelous adventure. But a child has his (4)
_________ .He is not so free to do as he wishes as he thinks older people are: he is continually told
not to do things, or being punished (5)________ what he has done wrong. His life’s therefore not perfectly happy.
When a young man starts to (6) _________his own living, he becomes free from the
discipline of school and parents, but at the same time he is forced to accept responsibilities. He can
no longer expect (7)________ to pay for his food, his clothes and his room, but he has to work if he
wants to live comfortably. If he spends most time playing about in a day he used to as a child, he
will be hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he
may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have
the greatest happiness of seeing himself make steady (8)_______ in his job and of building up for
himself his own position in society.
Old age has always been thought of as the worst age to be, but it is not necessary for the old

III. Read the passage and find a suitable word to fill each blank. 1,8PTS
Travelling is a great thing to do. It (1)HELPS us learn about different people and different
places. Some people travel (2)BECAUSE they want to see nature. Others travel so that they can
(3)MAKE friends and try great food. Of course, a lot of tourists are (4)INTERESTED in traditional
culture. Tourism can be very good for traditional cultures. This is because when people travel to
(5)ONE/A/ANOTHER country, they often want to learn more about that country’s traditions, such
as music, food, and history. Therefore, the local people in that country will (6)PROTECT their
traditional culture alive. They will (7)WEAR traditional clothing, and sell traditional food. They
will also have shows for tourists. These shows can (8)BE dances, concerts, plays, or something else.
Tourism (9)ALSO helps people respect each other. (10)WHEN/ONCE you understand another
culture well, you will probably respect that culture much more. You will probably want to protect that culture (11) AS well.
However, tourism is not always good for traditional culture. Many people say that
tourism (12) CAUSES “fake traditional culture”. This means that the local people wear traditional
costumes, and (13)PERFORM traditional dances only for tourists, but that is not their real lifestyle.
Their real lifestyles are (14)CONTRARY to the tourists’ lifestyle. They are just pretending because
they want to make money. Another problem is that tourists can (15)HARM with the local people’s
lives. For example, tourists come to watch local people praying in temples. While the local people
pray, tourists take photographs and make noise. D. WRITING
