The end of the silver screen?
Cinema technology has remained much the same for a century, so when will it go digital? Kevin Hilton
views the projections.
A. Cinema is full of contradictions. It is high-tech and old-fashioned at the same time. Today's films are full
of digital sound and computer-generated special effects. Yet they are still stored on celluloid film, the basis of
which is more than 100 years old. They are also displayed with projectors and screens that seem to belong to
our great grandparents' generation.
B. Now that we are in the second century of cinema, there are moves to bring the medium right up to date.
This will involve revolutionizing not just how films are made but also how they are distributed and presented.
The aim is not only to produce and prepare films digitally, but to be able to send them to movie theatres by
digital, electronic means. High-resolution digital projectors would then show the film. Supporters say this will
make considerable savings at all stages of this chain, particularly for distribution.
C. With such a major technological revolution on the horizon, it seems strange that the industry is still not
sure what to call itself. This may appear a minor point, but the choices, 'digital' cinema and 'electronic' cinema
(e-cinema), suggest different approaches to, and aspects of, the business. Digital cinema refers to the physical
capture of images; e-cinema covers the whole chain, from production through post-production (editing,
addition of special effects and construction of soundtrack) to distribution and projection.
D. And what about the effects of the new medium? The main selling point of digital cinema is the high
resolution and sharpness of the final image. But those who support the old-fashioned approach to film point
to the celluloid medium's quality of warmth. A recurring criticism of video is that it may be too good:
Trang 7/14 – Đề thi chọn HSG cấp tỉnh năm học 2020-2021– Môn Tiếng Anh
uncomfortably real, rather like looking through an open window. In 1989, the director of the first full-length
American digital high-definition movie admitted that the picture had a 'stark, strange reality to it'.
E. Even the money-saving aspect of e-cinema is doubted. One expert says that existing cinemas will have to
show the new material and not all of them will readily or rapidly furnish themselves with the right equipment.
'E-cinema is seen as a way of saving money, because print costs a lot,' he says. 'But for that to work, cinemas
have to be showing the films because cinemas are the engine that drives the film industry.'
F. This view has prompted some pro-digital entrepreneurs to take a slightly different approach. HD Thames
is looking at reinventing the existing cinema market, moving towards e-theatre, which would use digital video
and projection to present plays, musicals and some sporting events to the public. This is not that different from
the large-screen TV system that was set up in New York in 1930, and John Logie Baird's experiments with
TV in the late 1920s and early 30s.

Part 4: Read the passage below and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each of the following
questions. (1 point)
In the regions of Southeast Asia dwell the remains of an era that far exceeded its time in developments
and industrialization. This ancient city, which was mysteriously deserted in the 15
th
century, is known as
Angkor. Located in Cambodia, Angkor was established in 802 CE as the seat of the Khmer Empire. Khmer
was the largest continuous empire in Southeast Asia. Its main city of Angkor grew and developed until it was
abandoned in the year 1431. Many historians theorize as to why it was abandoned, but the mystery remains.
Angkor was a city of power, industry, architecture, and cultural unity, which is why speculation surrounds
its decline. The ancient Khmer city stretched over an area of nearly 120 square miles, comparable to present-
day Los Angeles. Each successive ruler to the throne brought significant additions that diversified the territory.
One ruler is known for constructing a bray, a massive water reservoir. Another built the imposing Angkor
Wat, a temple of great proportions that survived the city’s demise and exists today as a Buddhist temple. Along
with over seventy other temples in the region, Angkor was home to an expansive waterworks of marked
ingenuity when nothing of its kind existed in the world. The civilization was structured around the Mekong
River. Intricate and sophisticated irrigation systems were fashioned to transport water to people and fields in
all parts of the city, including those removed from the central water source. For this, the city became known
as the “Hydraulic City”. The people of Angkor were led by an extensive court system, made up of religious
and secular nobles as well as artisans, fishermen, rice farmers, soldiers, and elephant keepers. The civilization
was guarded by an army transported by elephants and ruled by shrewd and powerful kings. Yet after 600 years
of existence, an abandoned shell was all that remained.
The land, buildings, and architecture were reclaimed by the surrounding forest regions until the
19
th
century, when French archaeologists discovered the remains and began restoring sites in the great
city of Angkor. Since then, theories have evolved over time relating to the death of Angkor’s civilization.
The first theory states that the city fell because of war. The last two centuries of Angkor’s existence showed
a decline in the Khmer Empire’s population and power. Ongoing wars with neighboring Thailand had
devastated the nation. In 1431, attackers from Thai nations invaded and looted Angkor, leaving it desolate and
vacant. Continuous war with Thailand culminating in a final attack on the city could have weakened the empire
and led to the city’s demise.
Another theory states that a change in religion led to the country’s downfall. The Khmer Empire had
predominately been a Hindu nation, and the people were unified in their religion. Jayavarman VII, acclaimed
as the greatest of Angkor’s kings, took the throne in 1181 CE. He instituted a change in religion from Hinduism
to Mahayana Buddhism. This action subsequently could have destroyed the unity of the people and the overall
foundation of the empire.
A) Natural disaster is another feasible possibility for the scattering of people from the Angkor region.
B) Historians say earthquakes, floods, and drastic climate changes would have been capable of stripping
Angkor of its people. C) One researcher hypothesized that the city suffered from a lack of water due to the
transition from the medieval warm period to the little ice age. Others dismiss this idea. D)
However, a recently developed theory built on the work of French archaeologist Bernard-Philippe Groslier
may have shed the most light on Angkor’s demise. The theory suggests that the Angkorian civilization was
“defined, sustained, and ultimately overwhelmed by over-exploitation and the environmental impacts of a
complex water-management network.” Its vast waterworks proved too great for the city to manage. Also,
supplying such a massive empire with water had adverse effects on the environment. Ecological problems
Trang 9/14 – Đề thi chọn HSG cấp tỉnh năm học 2020-2021– Môn Tiếng Anh
included deforestation, topsoil degradation, and erosion due in part to clearing vegetation for cropland. Thus,
the city inadvertently brought about its own environmental collapse.
With the use of aerial photography and high-resolution, ground-sensing radar, researchers were able to
support Groslier’s theory with images that complete existing topographical maps. The radar detected surface
structures as well as subtle variances in surface vegetation and soil moisture. This proved that environmental
erosion had occurred. The combined images and ground-based investigations further revealed that Angkor
was a victim of its own industrial ingenuity, a city ahead of its time and vulnerable to its own power.

Entrepreneurs
Four entrepreneurs talk about their experiences on Dragons’ Den
A. James Halliburton: The Illoom balloon
The Dragons saw the business potential of Mr Halliburton’s invention - a glowing balloon which kept keys
afloat when they fell into water - and he initially accepted a £200,000 offer for a 25% stake in his company.
However, Mr Halliburton later changed his mind because when he was testing out his invention, he came up
with an even better idea. “When I saw how excited my next-door neighbour’s young sons were about an
illuminated balloon, I knew there was an opportunity to tap into that with an innovative new product. It left
me in no doubt that I could do it on my own, safe in the knowledge that I had an even bigger project in the
pipeline.” The Illoom Balloon is simply a reinforced balloon fitted with a tiny LED light inside, which glows
brightly when it is inflated. Mr Halliburton continued, “I took a gamble by not going with the Dragons’ cash,
but it has really paid off.”
B. Kirsty Henshaw: Freedom Desserts
Kirsty Henshaw secured a deal after impressing the investors on Dragons’ Den. Kirsty decided to create her
own range of dairy-free frozen desserts when she discovered that her son, Jacob, had an intolerance to dairy
products. She said: “It started with my little ice-cream maker. Jacob seemed to love the desserts, which was
my main aim. Then I just thought that maybe it could work as a business as well.” Kirsty admitted she had
been anxious about facing the judges. “Walking into the Den was nerve-racking,” she said. “But hearing the
Dragons compliment me and my product made up for all the hard work. When I first set out, it was very hard.
I lived with my mum and had two jobs to save money to fund my dream. This opportunity has made me even
more determined to keep on working hard to make the brand a success.”
C. Shaun Pulfrey: The Tangle Teezer
Dragon’ Den reject, Shaun Pulfrey, has had his innovative hairbrush snapped up by a well-known
pharmaceutical company. The device, designed to smooth tangled hair easily, should make the hairdresser a
good profit. Mr Pulfrey was turned down by the Dragons, who advised him to abandon his idea, saying it was
not a worthwhile business project. Mr Pulfrey said: “I just made a comment about one of the panellists
colouring her hair to show how useful the product could be on highlighted hair. The fact that she denied her
hair was coloured made me lose all hope.” Despite leaving the show with no investment, he said, “The whole
experience has been instrumental in my success because of the exposure it gave me and my product, but the
actual success of the product has been driven by its ability to do what it says it on the pack. I knew there was
a market for the Tangle Teezer.

D. Natalie Ellis: The Road Refresher Water Bowl
Natalie Ellis appeared on the show asking for £120,000 to help export her non-spill dog water bowl to
America. When she tearfully admitted that her previous business had failed after she had a stroke, aged just
37, she won sympathy from the Dragons but no investment. But viewers were impressed, and sales of the bowl
have soared since the show. Natalie was an unusual contestant on Dragons’ Den: unlike most, she did not
apply. Two researchers approached me at an awards ceremony and asked me to go on,” she says. “I didn’t
need investment, I just wanted expertise. The story was picked up by the American press and I am now in
talks with US retailers. I want to grow my business over there then sell it,” adds Natalie, who moves to Chicago
at the end of the month.

Part 3: Read the passage and do the tasks that follow. (1 point) The end of the silver screen?
Cinema technology has remained much the same for a century, so when will it go digital? Kevin Hilton views the projections.
Trang 6/14 – Đề thi chọn HSG cấp tỉnh năm học 2020-2021– Môn Tiếng Anh
uncomfortably real, rather like looking through an open window.
Questions 76-81
The Reading Passage has six paragraphs A–F.
Choose the correct heading for each paragraph from the list of headings below. List of Headings i. Indecision about a name

answer. Write your answers in the corresponding numbered boxes.
There are big changes ahead for cinema if digital production takes place and the industry no longer uses 82.
____ and gets rid of the old-fashioned 83. ______ used to show movies. The main advantage is likely to be
that the final image will be clearer. However, some people argue that the digital picture will lack 84. _______.

Part 4: Read the passage below and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each of the following questions. (1 point)
In the regions of Southeast Asia dwell the remains of an era that far exceeded its time in developments
and industrialization. This ancient city, which was mysteriously deserted in the 15th century, is known as
The land, buildings, and architecture were reclaimed by the surrounding forest regions until the
19th century, when French archaeologists discovered the remains and began restoring sites in the great
city of Angkor.
This action subsequently could have destroyed the unity of the people and the overall foundation of the empire.
 A) Natural disaster is another feasible possibility for the scattering of people from the Angkor region.
B) Historians say earthquakes, floods, and drastic climate changes would have been capable of stripping
Angkor of its people. C) One researcher hypothesized that the city suffered from a lack of water due to the
transition from the medieval warm period to the little ice age. Others dismiss this idea. D)
Trang 8/14 – Đề thi chọn HSG cấp tỉnh năm học 2020-2021– Môn Tiếng Anh
included deforestation, topsoil degradation, and erosion due in part to clearing vegetation for cropland. Thus,
the city inadvertently brought about its own environmental collapse.
With the use of aerial photography and high-resolution, ground-sensing radar, researchers were able to
support Groslier’s theory with images that complete existing topographical maps. The radar detected surface
structures as well as subtle variances in surface vegetation and soil moisture. This proved that environmental

was a victim of its own industrial ingenuity, a city ahead of its time and vulnerable to its own power.

A–D in the corresponding numbered space provided. Each letter may be used more than once. (1 point) Entrepreneurs

Natalie was an unusual contestant on Dragons’ Den: unlike most, she did not
apply. “Two researchers approached me at an awards ceremony and asked me to go on,” she says. “I didn’t
need investment, I just wanted expertise. The story was picked up by the American press and I am now in
talks with US retailers. I want to grow my business over there then sell it,” adds Natalie, who moves to Chicago at the end of the month. Which person __________
