I recently learned how to use a computer, and I have many
friends who play computer games at home. However, although recently
I have begun to worry that in nowadays we rely too much on electronic
gadgets.
Once before people managed to write and think using their brains, but
now many people have become so accustomed to using machines so that
they can't do anything without them. There are many people who they
depend on electronic gadgets completely. For instance, many of my
friends sit at home in the evening to watch television, and instead of
going out to meet people. I think that this makes everybody feel more
lonely, even though they learn a lot about people all over in the world.
Of course there are many electronic gadgets that save us time, though
not all of them are really necessary. I am in the favour of some gadgets,
but I am against having everything in life depending on pushing a
button.

SECTION III: READING COMPREHENSION (6.0 pts)
PART 1: Read the text and the questions below. For each question, choose the correct answer.
Write A, B, C, or D in the numbered box. (1.5 pts)
Cruises are becoming more and more popular, with around 20 million passengers per year
now enjoying holidays on board luxury ships. Many people see a cruise as the perfect way to sit back
and do nothing, and enjoy time off work. But what is the effect on the environment of this trend?
Although it usually takes less energy for a vehicle to move through water than over land,
cruise ships are often huge, with the biggest ones carrying up to 6,000 passengers. Moving such large
vehicles requires enormous engines which burn as much as 300,000 litres of fuel a day. One scientist
has calculated that cruise ships create as much pollution as 5 million cars going over the same
distance. Because they are out at sea, they also burn dirtier fuel that isn’t allowed on land.
Unfortunately, no government has control over the amount of air pollution out at sea.
Cruises also produce huge amounts of rubbish, and cruise ships aren’t usually good at
recycling. Waste water from showers and toilets is usually poured directly into the sea – as much per
day as from a small town. Waste food from restaurants isn’t put into the sea, but still causes
problems when brought back to the land.
Cruise ships also cause difficulties in the cities where they stop. Popular destinations can get
five or six ships per day, with thousands of tourists at a time. Good for restaurants? No. Restaurant
owners complain that the visitors look around for a few hours and then return to their ship to eat.
What’s more, the crowds can put off other tourists, who complain that the streets are too busy. Some
towns have banned cruise ships or put a limit on the number that can stop at the same time. People
who care about the environment worry that as the cruise industry continues to grow, so too will the
issues for our planet.
1. The purpose of the text is to ______
A. persuade people that a cruise is a wonderful holiday.
B. criticise people who go on cruise ships.
C. explain some of the problems that cruise ships cause.
D. persuade governments to ban cruise ships.
2. One reason cruise ships cause a lot of air pollution is because ______
A. they carry large numbers of cars as well as passengers.
Trang 3/6
B. their engines are not as efficient as those of other ships.
C. it takes more energy to move through water than over land.
D. they use types of fuel that are not permitted on land.
3. What do we learn about the waste products on cruise ships?
A. All the waste products are carried back to shore.
B. Waste food is often thrown away at sea.
C. Most cruise ships recycle their waste products.
D. An enormous amount of the waste water isn’t recycled.
4. Why are cruise ship passengers not popular in some cities?
A. They are sometimes rude to other tourists.
B. They don’t spend money on meals.
C. They fill up the restaurants, so other tourists can’t get in.
D. They complain when the city is too crowded.
5. Which best describes large cruise ships?
A. They seem to offer ideal relaxing holidays, but they aren’t environmentally friendly.
B. They are becoming very popular, and they bring a lot of benefits, in spite of their problems.
C. They used to cause a lot of pollution, but things are improving now.
D. They cause pollution in the sea and on land, so cities are planning to ban them in the future.

PART 3: You are going to read an article about higher education. Five sentences have been
removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-F the one which fits each gap (1-5). There
is one extra sentence which you do not need to use. (2.5 pts)
IS HIGHER EDUCATION FOR EVERYONE?
Everyone tells you the same thing work hard at school so that you can go on to study at a
university or college. It seems to be sensible advice. After all, the more qualified you are, the better
chance you have of getting a good job, right? Higher education is always a good thing, isn’t it?
Firstly, it depends on what you’re planning to study. In terms of being employable when you
graduate, the different branches of medicine, including dentistry, are probably the safest choices.
Some studies show that close to 100% of graduates in these fields found a job within six months.
(1) a_____
On the other hand, if it is your dream to study history or sociology, you need to be aware that,
at the moment, you are less likely to find a job if your degree is in either of these subjects. (2)
_d___. Once they graduated, many were unable to find work. Others were forced to undertake more
years of study or retraining in order to enter the job market.
Degrees related to business and management are among the most popular at the moment,
which means there is a great deal of competition for places both at university and at work. So you
may not find a place on your chosen course and, if you do, you will graduate with the same
qualifications as thousands of other people. To avoid this, you might consider studying more
specialized subjects such as waste management or environmental management. They may not be
your first choice but they are among the newer kinds of courses on offer which could well lead to a
good job. (3) _f____.
Because, let’s face it, not everyone is suited to another three or four years of study. Some
people are better off not continuing their education. (4) __b____. In addition, your family’s financial
circumstances might make it difficult to go away to study. Furthermore, some people simply can’t
afford the expense of it all.
This brings us to the all-important subject of money. The average graduate with a bachelor’s
degree owes in excess of £15,000 and this figure is increasing every year. If one also considers the
fact that he or she typically has to wait at least three months before he or she starts earning, you can
see that spending those extra three or four years actually earning money can make quite a difference.
(5) __c__.
Of course, despite all this, there are still many benefits of studying at degree level. A large
number of employers look for some evidence of higher education. And graduates usually get paid
higher salaries. In the end, the advice to work hard at school is sound advice. No-one in their right
mind would tell you to do the opposite. Leaving school with good qualifications will at least give
you more options. What you do with those options is up to you.
A. However, you have to ask yourself if it’s worth spending several years of your life studying
something that is less than ideal for you.
B. If you can find a job at 18 (or, why not, at 16), then you could end up being much more
financial secure.
C. Law graduates were similarly successful, so if these subjects are really what you want to
study and you can get a place on a course you are lucky.
D. These include people who suffer terribly form exam nerves, and those who find academic
work really difficult.
E. This would mean moving to the other end of the country or even to a different country
altogether.
F. A degree that is not in demand is practically useless, as many recent graduates have found out
to their cost.

Cruises are becoming more and more popular, with around 20 million passengers per year

Everyone tells you the same thing – work hard at school so that you can go on to study at a
university or college.
They may not be
your first choice but they are among the newer kinds of courses on offer which could well lead to a good job. (3) _f____.
Because, let’s face it, not everyone is suited to another three or four years of study. Some
people are better off not continuing their education. (4) __b____. In addition, your family’s financial
circumstances might make it difficult to go away to study. Furthermore, some people simply can’t afford the expense of it all.
B. If you can find a job at 18 (or, why not, at 16), then you could end up being much more financial secure.
C. Law graduates were similarly successful, so if these subjects are really what you want to
study and you can get a place on a course you are lucky.
D. These include people who suffer terribly form exam nerves, and those who find academic work really difficult.
E. This would mean moving to the other end of the country or even to a different country altogether.
F. A degree that is not in demand is practically useless, as many recent graduates have found out to their cost. Your answers: 1.c 2.f 3.a 4.d 5.b Trang 5/6
