Read the passage and choose the best answer PASSAGE 1
The 23rd Southeast Asian Games (also known as the 2005 SEAG) were held in the
Philippines from November 27th to December 5th in 2005. The games were participated by
the eleven nations of Southeast Asia. This was the first time that the opening and closing
ceremonies were held in a large open field, despite the fact that Manila has many stadiums.
The organization decided to hold the games at an open space to accommodate the large
number of participants and spectators. As a result, the 2005 SEA Games ranked as having the
largest audience - 200,000 people - during the opening and closing ceremonies. These games
were also noted for having the most number of delegates in the history of the SEA Games. In
the end, all participating countries received medals. The event was meant to tighten ties
among Southeast Asian countries as a region and as a preparation as will for the upcoming Asian Games and Olympic Games.
Events in men's football actually started on November 20th, prior to the opening ceremony.
Water polo events began on November 21st, women's football on November 23rd, sailing on
November 26th, and tennis on November 26th;
There were 1,461 medals awarded, 444 of which were gold, 434 were silver, and 583 were
bronze. The first gold medal of the games was awarded to Singapore on November 25th when
their water polo team came out undefeated during the round-robin tournament round. The
Philippine team took the silver medal in that event, and Malaysia brought home the bronze.
The Games were also considered a valuable opportunity for athletes to gain competition
experience and preparation for the upcoming Asian Games and Olympic Games. It was
purposely created to strengthen friendship, solidarity and understanding among neighboring countries in the region.
This was the third SEA Games to be hosted by the Philippines. The last two times the
Philippines hosted the games were in 1981, and again in 1991. Although the majority of
events took place in Manila, logistical hurdles required the unusual step of spreading - out the

Parents are often upset when their children praise the homes of their friends and regard it as a
slur on their own cooking, or cleaning, or furniture, and often are foolish enough to let the
adolescents see that they are annoyed. They may even accuse them of disloyalty, or make
some spiteful remark about the friends' parents. Such a loss of dignity and descent into
childish behaviour on the part of the adults deeply shocks the adolescents, and makes them
resolve that in future they will not talk to their parents about the places or people they visit.
Before very long the parents will be complaining that the child is so secretive and never tells
them anything, but they seldom realize that they have brought this on themselves.
Disillusionment with the parents, however good and adequate they may be both as parents
and as individuals, is to some degree inevitable. Most children have such a high ideal of their
parents, unless the parents themselves have been unsatisfactory, that it can hardly hope to
stand up to a realistic evaluation. Parents would be greatly surprised and deeply touched if
they realized how much belief their children usually have in their character and infallibility,
and how much this faith means to a child. If parents were prepared for this adolescent
reaction, and realized that it was a sign that the child was growing up and developing valuable
powers of observation and independent judgment, they would not be so hurt, and therefore
would not drive the child into opposition by resenting and resisting it.
The adolescent, with his passion for sincerity, always respects a parent who admits that he
is wrong, or ignorant, or even that he has been unfair or unjust. What the child cannot forgive
is the parents' refusal to admit these charges if the child knows them to be true.
71. How do parents often feel when their children compare the homes of their friends with their own? A. pleased B. disappointed C. excited D. good
72. What aspects of the homes does the passage mention children often give comparison on? A. chairs and tables B. the food and drinks C. the attitude of the adults
D. the way adults take care of the home
73. How does the author regard the parents' usual attitude towards the children’s remarks? A. not sensitive B. not open C. not generous D. not sensible
74. Which of the following could best replace the word 'descent' as used in paragraph 1? A. inclination B. character C. impulse D. mood
75. How do children often feel about their parents' reaction towards their comparison? A. afraid B. shocked C. tired D. annoyed
76. What do children often do after such reaction from their parents?
A. They bring home some secrets.
B. They never tell about the homes they visit.
C. They complain about the parents' attitude. D. They keep on giving other remarks.
77. According to the passage, which of the following situations occurs the most often?
A. Children stand up to their parents.
B. Children have high ideas of their parents.
C. Children have unsatisfactory parents.
D. Children are disillusioned with their parents.
78. Why does the author think that children's evaluation is often undeniable?
A. Because most parents are unsatisfactory.
B. Because the parents are good and adequate.
C. Because children often have very high ideas of their parents.
D. Because parents are often secretive.
79. What, according to the author, should parents NOT do with their children's judgment? A. resent and resist it
B. he careful and observational
C. be prepared and understanding
D. observe and try to understand it
80. What does the author refer to by “the adolescent” in paragraph 3?
