I. READING COMPREHENSION 1 - Choose the best answer for each of the following questions. READING 1.
Legend has it that sometime toward the end of the Civil War (1861-1865) a government train carrying
oxen traveling through the northern plains of eastern Wyoming was caught in a snowstorm and had to be
abandoned. The driver returned the next spring to see what had become of his cargo. Instead of the skeletons
he had expected to find, he saw his oxen living, fat, and healthy. How had they survived?
The answer lay in a resource that unknowing Americans lands trampled underfoot in their haste to cross the
“Great American Desert” to reach lands that sometimes proved barren. In the eastern parts of the United
States, the preferred grass for forage was a cultivated plant. It grew well with enough rain, then when cut and
stored it would cure and become nourishing hay for winter feed. But in the dry grazing lands of the West that
familiar blue joint grass was often killed by drought. To raise cattle out there seemed risky or even hopeless.
Who could imagine a fairy-tale grass that required no rain and somehow made it possible for cattle to feed
themselves all winter? But the surprising western wild grasses did just that. They had wonderfully convenient
features that made them superior to the cultivated eastern grasses. Variously known as buffalo grass, grama
grass, or mesquite grass, not only were they immune to drought; but they were actually preserved by the lack
of summer and autumn rains. They were not juicy like the cultivated eastern grasses, but had short, hard
stems. And they did not need to be cured in a barn, but dried right where they grew on the ground. When they
dried in this way, they remained naturally sweet and nourishing through the winter. Cattle left outdoors to
fend for themselves thrived on this hay. And the cattle themselves helped plant the fresh grass year after year
for they trampled the natural seeds firmly into the soil to be watered by the melting snows of winter and the
occasional rains of spring. The dry summer air cured them much as storing in a barn cured the cultivated grasses.

Life originated in the early seas less than a billion years after Earth was formed. Yet another three
billion years were to pass before the first plants and animals appeared on the continents. Life's transition
from the sea to the land was perhaps as much of an evolutionary challenge as was the genesis of life.
What forms of life were able to make such a drastic change in lifestyle? The traditional view of the
first terrestrial organisms is based on mega fossils ― relatively large specimens of essentially whole plants
and animals. Vascular plants, related to modern seed plants and ferns, left the first comprehensive mega
fossil record. Because of this, it has been commonly assumed that the sequence of terrestrialization reflected
the evolution of modern terrestrial ecosystems. In this view, primitive vascular plants first colonized the
margins of continental waters, followed by animals that fed on the plants, and lastly by animals that preyed
on the plant-eaters. Moreover, the mega fossils suggest that terrestrial life appeared and diversified
explosively near the boundary between the Silurian and the Devonian periods, a little more than 400 million years ago.
Recently, however, paleontologists have been taking a closer look at the sediments below this
Silurian-Devonian geological boundary. It turns out that some fossils can be extracted from these sediments
by putting the rocks in an acid bath. The technique has uncovered new evidence from sediments that were
deposited near the shores of the ancient oceans ― plant microfossils and microscopic pieces of small
animals. In many instances the specimens are less than one-tenth of a millimeter in diameter. Although they
were entombed in the rocks for hundreds of millions of years, many of the fossils consist of the organic remains of the organism.
These newly discovered fossils have not only revealed the existence of previously unknown
organisms, but have also pushed back these dates for the invasion of land by multicellular organisms. Our
views about the nature of the early plant and animal communities are now being revised. And with those
revisions come new speculations about the first terrestrial life-forms.

Read the text below and decide which answer best fits each space. SMILE POWER
The expression on your face can actually dramatically alter. Your feelings and perceptions, and it has been
proven that (1) ________smiling or frowning can create corresponding emotional responses. The idea was
first (2)_______by a French physiologist, Israel Waynbaum, in 1906. He believed that different facial
expressions affected the flow of blood to the brain, and that this could create positive or negative feelings. A
happy smile or irrepressible (3) ________ increased the blood flow and contributed to joyful feelings. But
sad, angry expressions decreased the flow of oxygen-carrying blood, and created a vicious (4) ________ of
gloom and depression by effectively (5) ________ the brain of essential fuel.
Psychologist Robert Zajonc rediscovered this early research, and (6) ________ that the temperature of the
brain could affect the production and synthesis of neurotransmitters – which definitely influence our moods
and energy levels. He agues that an impaired blood flow could not only deprive the brain of oxygen, but
create further chemical imbalance (7) ________ inhibiting these vital hormone messages. Zajonc goes on to
propose that our brains remember that smiling is associated with being happy, and that by deliberately
smiling through your tears you can (8) ________ your brain to release uplifting neurotransmitters – replacing
a depressed condition with a happier one. People suffering from psychosomatic (9) ________, depression
and anxiety states could (10)________ from simply exercising their zygomatic muscles - which pull the

energy but it cannot be used in many parts of the world where there is (8) ______ wind. Wave power is better
source of energy in certain ways but it is clearly not practicable to build dams across every river estuary or to
cover seas with expensive equipment. It is also ineffective where the sea is usually calm. Solar power is
renewable, it does not cause pollution and it does not add to the earth's heat load. Unfortunately, solar power
is not distributed equally, and in the northern latitudes it is difficult to collect and store. Solar power also
requires expensive equipment. Finally, nuclear power provides a very (9) ______ and renewable power
