V. READING COMPREHENSION
Passage 1: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 71 to 80.
The ability to conduct electricity is one of the key properties of a metal. Other solid material such as
silicon can conduct electricity but only effectively at certain temperatures. Also, some substances such as
salt (sodium chloride) can conduct when molten or when dissolved in water. The ability of metals to conduct
electricity is due to how their atoms bond together. In order to bond together the metal atoms lose at least
one of their outermost electrons. This leaves the metal atoms with a positive charge and they are now
strictly ions. The lost electrons are free to move in what are known as a sea of electrons. Since the electrons
are negatively charged they attract the ions and this is what keeps the structure together.
An electric current is a flow of charge and since the electrons in the sea of electrons are free to move
they can be made to flow in one direction when a source of electrical energy such as a battery is connected
to the metal. Hence we have an electric current flowing through the wire, and this is what makes metals
such good conductors of electricity. The only other common solid conducting material that pencil users are
likely to encounter is graphite (what the ‘lead’ of a pencil is made from). Graphite is a form of carbon and
again the carbon atoms bond in such a way that there is a sea of electrons that can be made to flow as an
electric current. Likewise, if we have an ionic substance like salt we can make the electrically charged ions
flow to create a current but only when those ions are free to move, either when the substance is a liquid or
dissolved in water. In its solid state an ionic substance like salt cannot conduct electricity as its charged ions cannot flow.
Electrical insulators are substances that cannot conduct electricity well either, because they contain no
charged particles or any charged particles they might contain do not flow easily. Water itself is a poor
conductor or electricity as it does not contain a significant amount of fully charged particles (the ends of a
water molecule are partly charged but overall the molecule is neutral). However, most water we encounter
does contain dissolved charged particles, so it will be more conductive than pure water. Many of the
problems that occur when touching electrical devices with wet hands result from the ever-present salt that is
left on our skin through perspiration and it dissolves in the water to make it more conductive.
(By Helena Gillespie and Rob Gillespie. Science for Primary School Teacher. OUP)

Passage 2: Read the passages carefully and choose the best answer
The ocean bottom- a region nearly 2.5 times greater than total land area of the Earth- is a vast frontier
that even today is largely unexplored and uncharted. Until about a century ago , the deep-ocean floor
was completely inaccessible, hidden beneath waters averaging over 3,6000 meters deep. Totally
without light and subjected to intense pressures hundreds of times greater than at the Earth’s surface,
deep-ocean bottom is a hostile environment to humans , in some ways as forbidding and remote as the void of outer space.
Although researchers have taken samples of deep-ocean rocks and sediments for over a century, the first
detailed global investigation of the ocean bottom did not actually start until 1968, with the beginning of
the National Science Foundation’s Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP). Using techniques first developed
for the offshore oil gas industry, the Dad’s drill ship , the Glomar Challenger, was able to maintain a
steady position on the ocean’s surface and drill in very deep waters, extracting samples of sediments and rock from the ocean floor.
The Glomar Challenger completed 96 voyages in a 15 –year research program that ended in November
1983. During this time, the vessel logged 600,000 kilometers and took almost 20,000 core samples of
seabed sediments and rocks at 624
drilling sites around the world . The Glomar Challenger’s core samples have allowed geologists to
reconstruct what the planet looked like hundreds of millions of years ago and to calculate what it will
problem look like millions of years in the future. Today , largely on the strength of evidence gathered
during the Glomar Challenger’s voyages, nearly all earth scientists agree on the theories of plate
tectonics and continental drift that explain many of the geological processes that shape the Earth.
The cores of sediment drilled by the Glomar Challenger have also yielded information critical to
understanding the world’s past climates . Deep-ocean sediments provide a climatic record stretching
back hundreds of millions of years, because they are largely isolated from the mechanical erosion and
the intense chemical and biological activity that rapidly destroy much land-based evidence of past
climates. This record has already provided insights into the patterns and causes of past climatic
change-information that may be used to predict future climates

People have tried for over 2000 years to find a relationship (71) . people’s physical

In a word where 2 billion people live in homes that don’t have light bulbs, technology holds the key (81)
_______ banishing poverty. Even the simplest technologies can tranform lives and save money. Vaccines,
crops, computers and sources of solar energy can all reduce poverty in developing countries. For example,
cheap oral-rehydration therapy developed in Bangladesh has dramatically cut the death (82) _______ from childhood diarrhoea.
But even when such technologies exist, the depressing fact is that we can’t make them cheap(83) _______

where they have been installed they change lives. A decent light in the evening gives children more time for
homework and extends the productive day for adults.
Kenya has a thriving solar industry and six years ago Kenyan pioneers also (84) _______ connecting
schools to the Internet via radio links. These people were fortunate (85) _______ being able to afford solar
panels, radios and old computers. How much bigger would the impact be if these things were(86) _______
and priced specifically for poor people?
Multinationals must become part of the solution, because (87) _______ they own around 60 percent of the
world’s technology, they seldom make products for poor customers. Of 1,223 new drugs marketed

To (95)______ a professional in any sport, you have to go through with a strict training schedule. And
it’s not easy! It means doing without some of life’s (96)______ pleasures, too. For example, to build up your
physical (97)______ you may have to stick (98)______ a special diet and give up some of your favourite
foods. Smoking and alcohol are out, and to (99)______ fit you have to work out regularly every day.
Sometimes it all pays off, but the road to success is long and there are no guarantees. No wonder that
