5. READING COMPREHENSION (10PTS)
PASSAGE 1: Read the text below and choose the best answer to each question
Mark Zuckerberg was born in 1984, in New York, into a prosperous, professional
family. He developed an interest in computers at an early age and when he was twelve, he
created a messaging program which he named "Zucknet". His dentist father used it in his
surgery so that his receptionist could inform him of the arrival of a patient without yelling
across the room. Together with his friends, Mark spent much of his spare time as a boy
designing and making computer games just for fun.
In 2002, Mark enrolled at Harvard University. By his second year at the institution, he
had acquired a reputation on the campus as a developer of software. It was at that time he
invented "Facemash" which compared pictures of female students and allowed users to vote
on which one was the most attractive. The program became very popular on campus, but was
later shut down by the university authorities who deemed it 'inappropriate'.
Based on the buzz of "Facemash", three of Mark's fellow students, Divya Narendra, and
twins, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, asked him to work with them on an idea for a social
networking site called "Harvard Connection". This site was designed to use information from
Harvard's student networks to create a dating site for the university's elite. Mark was initially
enthusiastic about the complex project but boredom soon set in and he backed out of it to
work on his own social networking site. He created a site that allowed users to produce their
own profiles, upload photos, and communicate with other people beyond the confines of the
university. He called the site "Facebook" and he operated from one small college room until
June 2004 when he finally abandoned his studies to devote himself fully to Facebook and
moved the company to California.
By the end of 2004, Facebook had one million users and Mark was climbing high.
However, in 2006, the multi-millionaire business mogul faced his first big hurdle. The
creators of Harvard Connection claimed that he had used their idea, and insisted that he
should compensate them for their business losses. Mark maintained that the ideas were based
on two very different types of social networks but, after lawyers searched his records,
incriminating emails revealed that he may have intentionally stolen the intellectual property of
his former partners. Although an initial settlement of $65 million was reached between the
two parties, the legal dispute over the matter continued well into 2011, after the Harvard
Connection creators claimed they were misled with regards to the value of the Facebook
stock.
Since amassing his sizeable fortune, Mark has used his millions to fund a variety of
philanthropic causes. He has put lots of money into the deteriorating schools system in
deprived parts on New York and he actively encourages other wealthy, young entrepreneurs to
follow his example and put back something into society.

PASSAGE 2: Read the text below and choose the best answer to each question
Welcome to Trang An, Vietnam's newest UNESCO World Heritage Site, a place where
the water is crystal clear and pink flowers bloom along the shallows. Temples rest on a
precipice of rock and water. Here, for 30,000 years, people have lived amongst these
limestone giants. To the unfamiliar, this area is a maze of confusing waterways and
impassable hills, a place where one could easily disappear from the world. However, to the
emperors of the 10th and 11th centuries, this was the ideal setting for a capital city where the
inhabitants could be controlled and enemies rebuffed.
This combination of stunning natural beauty and ancient history has led Trang An to be
recognised as Vietnam's eighth World Heritage Site. Unlike the previous seven, 'Trang An is
notable for being the only UNESCO site in Vietnam to be classified for both its cultural
beauty and natural integrity.
At the ticket office, we are met by the sight of thousands of wooden boats bobbing
along the shoreline. Stepping gingerly into the closest dinghy, we are greeted by a young
woman whose ability to paddle three adults - all in the midst of Christmas feasting - for three
straight hours left me in awe of her strength. What followed was a string of beautiful caves of
varying heights and lengths, interspersed with scenes of a peaceful beauty that can be hard to
come by in Vietnam.
Dubbed Halong Bay on land', Trang An's landscape is reminiscent of its coastal World
Heritage neighbour. Dominated by similar karst geography, Halong Bay and Trang An both
provide a stunning backdrop to a tranquil boat cruise. Unlike Halong, however, the boats at
Trang An are small, seating no more than five adults, and weekday crowds are minimal. We
emerged from a particularly low cave opening and into a small cove ringed by flowering reeds
and walerlilies. The steep limestone cliffs block all outside sounds. Underwater reeds stand
tall in the clear water beneath our boat, their green spongy limbs waving gently in the current
as we paddle past. Brown-and-gold fish dart between grass, their scales glinting in the
sunlight, before plunging into the shadows of the towering hills above. Water movement is
imperceptible, with the steep hillsides, plunging valleys and clear sky mirrored in its glassy
surface. It is as though a parallel world of deep crevices and underwater mountains exists just
below our feet.
A parallel world does, in fact, describe how it seemed as we floated through the caves
of Trang An. The journey through the first hollow felt like stepping through the back of the
wardrobe and entering Narnia. We were suddenly transported into a beautiful, magical world.
So at odds with the industrial limestone factories that dominate the Ninh Binh landscape, this
small pocket of serenity is surprising.
With more and more visitors flocking to Vietnam's World Heritage Sites, I worry that
Trang An will suffer the consequences of unchecked mass tourism. We can only hope that
tourism officials will learn from the experiences of other popular tourist destinations and
ensure that this place remains as close to paradise as it was on our visit.

Leading a healthy lifestyle is not about overdoing exercises either. It is
becoming a common conception that the more you spend time on workout, the
better it is for your health. Coupled with the problem of poor nutrition as a
result of keep strict diets, those who are fanatic about overstretching themselves
in gyms might constantly feel too tired to work. Worse, for some, passing out is
not unlikely.
It is important to keep eyes on what you eat and how much exercise you do so
that you could maintain a healthy weight and avoid health problems. It is also
equally important to make sure that your mood and sense of well-being will not
be accordingly affect. Whatever you might do, it is critical that you should feel
great, have more energy, improve your outlook, and stabile your mood.
Up to now, there have been very few studies that definitely prove that living
one way is "healthier" than others. In fact, there is only one proven fact that all
of our bodies are so diversify and different and can respond to chemical and
environmental stressors differently. It is you yourself who will make the final
decisions on how much food to eat and how much exercise to do.

Connection creators claimed they were misled with regards to the value of the Facebook stock.

Unlike the previous seven, 'Trang An is
notable for being the only UNESCO site in Vietnam to be classified for both its cultural beauty and natural integrity.
What followed was a string of beautiful caves of
varying heights and lengths, interspersed with scenes of a peaceful beauty that can be hard to come by in Vietnam.
Water movement is
imperceptible, with the steep hillsides, plunging valleys and clear sky mirrored in its glassy
surface. It is as though a parallel world of deep crevices and underwater mountains exists just below our feet.
