Passage A:
People have been hunting whales for at least a thousand years, and there were no real problems

something had to be done. It was environmental groups like Greenpeace that really made things
change. They set out to make people aware of the fact that whales were fast becoming extinct. But even
now we don’t know if all this interest has become too late. Let’s take the great blue whale for example,

Girls who study ballet generally begin by age eight to ten. Boys often start later. Ballet training
is hard work. Ballet students must develop strength, balance, and flexibility as well as grace. They must
learn a set of movements and gestures. Girls also learn to dance on their toes. They usually begin pointe
(tip-of-the-toes) work after three years of training. All ballet students practice five basic positions of the
feet. These five positions form the basis of almost all ballet steps. All of these positions are performed
with the legs turned outward at the hip. The feet should be able to form a straight line on the floor.

Shortly after stepping onto the surface, Armstrong took a “grab sample,” or contingency
sample, scooping it up into a Teflon bag on the end of a light collapsible rod. The pole he discarded,
but the bag of soil he rolled up andwith some difficultytucked into a pocket above his left knee.
With a specially made aluminum scoop on an extension handle, and with a pair of long aluminum
tongs, Armstrong later gathered a larger quantity of the dark lunar soil and representative samples of
the lunar rocks. These he put into two boxes, each formed from a single piece of aluminum. A ring of
soft metal, indium, lined the lip of each box; when the box was closed and the straps drawn tight
around it, a knifelike strip around the edge of the lid bit deeply into the indium, thus helping to seal the
samples in a vacuum and to protect them against contamination.
73. PARAGRAPH 3
Lots of work has to be done before the filming begins. The producer and director plan how and
when they will film each scene. A movie is filmed scene by scene, and a scene is filmed shot by shot.
The scenes are not usually filmed in the order that you see them in the movie. Sometimes the weather is
bad and an outdoor scene cannot be filmed. Big, fancy sets take a long time to build. Scenes using these
sets are often shot later even though you may see them at the beginning of the film.
74. PARAGRAPH 4
Think about your daily life. Do you follow the same read :o work every day? Do you sit in the
same place in class? When you get dressed, do you always put the same leg or arm in first? You
probably do, because we all have routines in our lives. Routines save time and energy because you do
them without thinking, that's why they are so important in the morning when your brain isn't active.
Here's Jo talking about her morning routine.
75. PARAGRAPH 5
An American TV network has had an international hit with the drama “24”, a thriller known for its
suspense and often graphic violence. Over the past year, controversy has surrounded the series because
of its portrayal of Muslim terrorists and its frequent scenes of torture. But the content of “24” is not the
only thing that would have been unthinkable on primetime television 20 years ago. Its form also
represents a major change in modem TV: during each episode’s 44 minutes a realtime hour, minus
16 minutes for commercials the show connects the lives of 21 different characters, each with their
own personalities and specific relationships with other characters. Nine different story lines (or
“threads") arc depicted, each involving events and information revealed in previous episodes.
76. PARAGRAPH 6
Colors are one of the most exciting experiences in life. I love them, and they are just as
important to me as emotions are. Have you ever wondered how the two are so intimately related? Color
directly affects your emotions. Color both reflects the current state of your emotions, and is something
that you can use to improve or change your emotions. The color that you choose to wear either reflects
your current state of being or reflects the color or emotion that you need.
77. PARAGRAPH 7
One of the interesting things about Cuba is its educational system. As in many other countries schools
are free. What is unusual is that schools combine study with manual work. Each school has a plot of
land where children work for a few hours each day. They plant vegetables, which they weed and water
and later they harvest the crop. In this way they develop good working habit and learn how important it
is to produce. Usually, children do not like growing vegetables such as spinach, Cuba children soon
develop a taste for them. During the summer, older children also go to the country to help the farmers
with the crops. In this system, the children spend part of their school time studying and the rest working
in the open air helping increase the nation’s production.
78. PARAGRAPH 8
People kill. Animals kill. Animals and people kill for food, or they kill their enemies. People and
animals can move around and find something to kill. They can run away from an enemy. They
can kill it if it is necessary. Many kinds of animals eat plants. The plants cannot run away from
their enemies. Some plants make poison. If an animal eat part of the plant, it gets sick or dies.
Animals learn to stay away from these plants. There are many kinds of plants that make poison.
Most of them grow in the desert or in the tropics. Today farmers use kinds of poison come from
petroleum , but petroleum is expensive. Scientists collect poisonous plants and study them.
Maybe farmers can use cheap poison from plants instead of expensive poison from petroleum.
79. PARAGRAPH 9
In 2006, Sony Pictures released a remarkable and intriguing film entitled The Da Vinci Code,
based on the novel of the same name by Dan Brown. In the film, religious leaders and professors are in
a race to discover the secrets of an organization called the Priory of Sion. The biggest secret kept by
this organization is supposedly that Jesus Christ and a woman whose name is recorded in the Bible as
Mary Magdalene had a child, and that their family 55 line continues to this day. In a TV interview, Dan
Brown stated that, in his book, "all of the art, architecture, secret rituals, secret societies, all of that is
historical fact." However, while the Priory of Sion did exist, it's nothing like the one which is so central
to The Da Vinci Code.
80. PARAGRAPH 10
Fashions have always changed with time. No doubt Roman girls worried about having the
latest hairstyle and boys in Ancient Egypt wanted to have sandals that were cool and not the sensible
ones their mothers preferred. Look back over recent times, there seem to be two main differences in the
way fashions have changed compared to earlier time. Firstly, far more people have a choice of clothes
available to them. There are few places in the world where the trainers, the caps or the T-shirts of
teenagers do not change from one year to the next. Secondly, styles are repeated within a much shorter
time than they used to be. For instance, in the 1960s, dresses had the same low waists and narrow skirts
as forty years before.

Read the text below and choose the best answer to each question Passage A:
People have been hunting whales for at least a thousand years, and there were no real problems
until 20th century. What happened was that fishing technology became much more efficient and the
ships were much faster, so more and more whales were caught. In the 1960s the main whaling
countries were killing more than sixty thousand whales a year, and everyone began to realize that
something had to be done. It was environmental groups like Greenpeace that really made things
change. They set out to make people aware of the fact that whales were fast becoming extinct. But even
now we don’t know if all this interest has become too late. Let’s take the great blue whale for example,
which at thirty to forty metres long is the biggest animal there has ever been – now there are perhaps
about two thousand or so left. In fact they have been protected for quite a long time, but there is no sign
that the population is growing.

72. PARAGRAPH 2
Shortly after stepping onto the surface, Armstrong took a “grab sample,” or contingency
sample, scooping it up into a Teflon bag on the end of a light collapsible rod. The pole he discarded,
but the bag of soil he rolled up and—with some difficulty—tucked into a pocket above his left knee.
16 minutes for commercials – the show connects the lives of 21 different characters, each with their
own personalities and specific relationships with other characters.
Brown stated that, in his book, "all of the art, architecture, secret rituals, secret societies, all of that is
historical fact." However, while the Priory of Sion did exist, it's nothing like the one which is so central to The Da Vinci Code.
For instance, in the 1960s, dresses had the same low waists and narrow skirts as forty years before.
