VI. READING COMPREHENSION(10PTS)
READING 1: Read the text below and then answer the questions.
Most human diets contain between 10 and 15 percent of their total calories as protein. The rest of the
dietary energy comes from carbohydrates, fats, and in some people, alcohol. The proportion of calories from
fats varies from 10 percent in poor communities to 40 percent or more in rich communities.
In addition to providing energy, fats have several other functions in the body. The fat-soluble vitamins,
A, D, E, and K, are dissolved in fats, as their name implies. Good sources of these vitamins have high oil or
fat content, and the vitamins are stored in the body’s fatty tissues. In the diet, fats cause food to remain longer
in the stomach, thus increasing the feeling of fullness for some time after a meal is eaten. Fats add variety,
taste, and texture to foods, which accounts for the popularity of fried foods. Fatty deposits in the body have an
insulating and protective value. The curves of the human female body are due mostly to strategically located
fat deposits.
Whether a certain amount of fat in the diet is essential to human health is not definitely known. When
rats are fed a fat-free diet, their growth eventually ceases, their skin becomes inflamed and scaly, and their
reproductive systems are damaged. Two fatty acids, linoleic and arachidonic acids, prevent these abnormalities
and hence are called essential fatty acids. They also are required by a number of other animals, but their roles
in human beings are debatable. Most nutritionists consider linoleic fatty acid an essential nutrient for humans.
61. We can infer from the passage that all of the following statements about fats are true EXCEPT
A. fats provide energy for the body
B. economics influences the distribution of calorie intake
C. poor people eat more fatty foods
D. alcohol is not a common source of dietary energy

A. forms B. needs C. jobs D. sources
63. The phrase “stored in” in line 7 is closest in meaning to_______
A. manufactured in B. attached to C. measured by D. accumulated in
64. According to the author of the passage, which of the following is true for rats when they are fed a fat free
diet?
A. They stop growing B. They have more babies
C. They lose body hair D. They require less care
65. That humans should all have some fat our diet is, according to the author,_________
A. a commonly held view B. not yet a proven fact
C. only true for women D. proven to be true by experiments in rats

READING 2. Read the passage and choose the correct answer
Recent technological advances in manned and unmanned vehicles, along with breakthroughs in satellite
technology and computer equipment, have overcome some of the limitations of divers and diving equipment
for scientists doing research on the great oceans of the world. Without a vehicle, divers often became sluggish,
and their mental concentration was severely limited. Because undersea pressure affects their speech organs,
communication among divers has always been difficult or impossible. But today, most oceanographers avoid
the use of vulnerable human divers, preferring to reduce the risk to human life and make direct observations
by means of instruments that are lowered into the ocean, from samples take from the water, or from
photographs made by orbiting satellites. Direct observations of the ocean floor can be made not only by divers
but also by deep-diving submarines in the water and even by the technology of sophisticated aerial photography
from vantage points above the surface of more than seven miles and cruise at depths of fifteen thousand feet.
In addition, radio-equipped buoys can be operated by remote control in order to transmit information back to
land-based laboratories via satellite. Particularly important for ocean study are data about water temperature,
currents, and weather. Satellite photographs can show the distribution of sea ice, oil slicks, and cloud
formations over the ocean. Maps created from satellite pictures can represent the temperature and the color of
the ocean's surface, enabling researchers to study the ocean currents from laboratories on dry land.
Furthermore, computers help oceanographers to collect, organize, and analyze data from submarines and
satellites. By creating a model of the ocean's movement and characteristics, scientists can predict the patterns
and possible effects of the ocean on the environment.
Recently, many oceanographers have been relying more on satellites and computers than on research
ships or even submarine vehicles because they can supply a greater range of information more quickly and
more effectively. Some of humankind's most serious problems, especially those concerning energy and food,
may be solved with the help of observations made possible by this new technology.

Life originated in the early seas less than a billion years after Earth was formed. Yet another three
billion years were to pass before the first plants and animals appeared on the continents. Life's transition from
the sea to the land was perhaps as much of an evolutionary challenge as was the genesis of life.
What forms of life were able to make such a drastic change in lifestyle? The traditional view of the
first terrestrial organisms is based on mega fossils relatively large specimens of essentially whole plants
and animals. Vascular plants, related to modern seed plants and ferns, left the first comprehensive mega fossil
record. Because of this, it has been commonly assumed that the sequence of terrestrialization reflected the
evolution of modern terrestrial ecosystems. In this view, primitive vascular plants first colonized the margins
of continental waters, followed by animals that fed on the plants, and lastly by animals that preyed on the plant-
eaters. Moreover, the mega fossils suggest that terrestrial life appeared and diversified explosively near the
boundary between the Silurian and the Devonian periods, a little more than 400 million years ago.
Recently, however, paleontologists have been taking a closer look at the sediments below this Silurian-
Devonian geological boundary. It turns out that some fossils can be extracted from these sediments by putting
the rocks in an acid bath. The technique has uncovered new evidence from sediments that were deposited near
the shores of the ancient oceans plant microfossils and microscopic pieces of small animals. In many
instances the specimens are less than one-tenth of a millimeter in diameter. Although they were entombed in
the rocks for hundreds of millions of years, many of the fossils consist of the organic remains of the organism.
These newly discovered fossils have not only revealed the existence of previously unknown organisms,
but have also pushed back these dates for the invasion of land by multicellular organisms. Our views about the
nature of the early plant and animal communities are now being revised. And with those revisions come new
speculations about the first terrestrial life-forms.
71. The word “drastic” is closest in meaning to
A. widespread B. radical C. progressive D. risky
72. According to the theory that the author calls “the traditional view,” what was the first form of life to appear
on land?
A. Bacteria B. Meat-eating animals
C. Plant-eating animals D. Vascular plants
73. According to the passage, what happened about 400 million years ago?
A. Many terrestrial life-forms died out. B. New life-forms on land developed at a rapid rate.
C. The megafossils were destroyed by floods. D. Life began to develop in the ancient seas.
74. The word “extracted” is closest in meaning to
A. located B. preserved C. removed D. studied
75. What can be inferred from the passage about the fossils mentioned in lines 17-20 ?
A. They have not been helpful in understanding the evolution of terrestrial life.
B. They were found in approximately the same numbers as vascular plant fossils.
C. They are older than the megafossils.
D. They consist of modern life-forms.
76. The word “instances” in line 21 is closest in meaning to
A. methods B. processes C. cases D. reasons
77. The word “they” refers to
A. rocks B. shores C. oceans D. specimens
78. The word “entombed” is closest in meaning to
A. crushed B. trapped C. produced D. excavated

A. The time estimate for the first appearance of terrestrial life-forms was revised.
B. Old techniques for analyzing fossils were found to have new uses.
C. The origins of primitive sea life were explained.
D. Assumptions about the locations of ancient seas were changed.

B. The discovery of microfossils supports the traditional view of how terrestrial life evolved.
C. New species have appeared at the same rate over the course of the last 400 million years.

Things started to go wrongly as soon as we got to the hotel. We were
all completely exhausting after our long journey and looking forward
to a shower and a rest. However, we found that our room was not
ready, which was very annoyed, although the manager was extremely
apologising. While we were waiting, we asked about the excursions
to places of an interest which we have read about in the brochure.
Imagine how we felt when we were told they had all been cancelled!
Apparently, the person responsible of organizing them had left
suddenly and had not been replaced. Then Sally saw a notice pinning
to the door of the restaurant, said it was closed for redecoration, and
Peter discovered that the swimming pool was empty. When we
eventually got to our room we were horrified to find that it was at the
back of the hotel, and we had a view of a car park, that seemed to be
used as a rubbish dump. We seriously began to wonder whether or
not to stay.

The curves of the human female body are due mostly to strategically located fat deposits.
62. The word “functions” in line 5 is closest in meaning to_______ A. forms B. needs C. jobs D. sources
63. The phrase “stored in” in line 7 is closest in meaning to_______
A. manufactured in B. attached to C. measured by D. accumulated in
64. According to the author of the passage, which of the following is true for rats when they are fed a fat free diet? A. They stop growing B. They have more babies C. They lose body hair D. They require less care
65. That humans should all have some fat our diet is, according to the author,_________ A. a commonly held view B. not yet a proven fact C. only true for women
D. proven to be true by experiments in rats
KEYS: 61C-62 C-63B-64A-65B

The traditional view of the
first terrestrial organisms is based on mega fossils ― relatively large specimens of essentially whole plants
and animals.
The technique has uncovered new evidence from sediments that were deposited near
the shores of the ancient oceans ― plant microfossils and microscopic pieces of small animals. In many
instances the specimens are less than one-tenth of a millimeter in diameter.
71. The word “drastic” is closest in meaning to A. widespread B. radical C. progressive D. risky
72. According to the theory that the author calls “the traditional view,” what was the first form of life to appear on land? A. Bacteria B. Meat-eating animals C.
74. The word “extracted” is closest in meaning to A. located B. preserved C. removed D. studied
76. The word “instances” in line 21 is closest in meaning to A. methods B. processes C. cases D. reasons
77. The word “they” refers to A. rocks B. shores C. oceans D. specimens
78. The word “entombed” is closest in meaning to A. crushed B. trapped C. produced D. excavated

A. The time estimate for the first appearance of terrestrial life-forms was revised.
B. Old techniques for analyzing fossils were found to have new uses.
C. The origins of primitive sea life were explained.
D. Assumptions about the locations of ancient seas were changed.
80. With which of the following conclusions would the author probably agree?
A. The evolution of terrestrial life was as complicated as the origin of life itself.
B. The discovery of microfossils supports the traditional view of how terrestrial life evolved.
C. New species have appeared at the same rate over the course of the last 400 million years.
D. The technology used by paleontologists is too primitive to make accurate determinations about ages of fossils. KEYS 71.B 72.D 73.B 74.C 75.C 76.C 77.D 78.B 79.A 80.A
