Wil people s0l read books 100 years from now? A few years ago, many people would have said no. It
seemed likely that computers and the Internet would replace books. Now, however, most experts think that books are here to stay.
There are a number of reasons why computers wil not replace books en0rely. One reason is that books
on paper are much cheaper than computers. And books do not need a power source. You can read a book
for as long as you want and wherever you want. You never have to worry about losing power. Also, many
people feel more comfortable reading words in a book than reading words on a computer screen because it is less 0ring to the eyes.
Wil books in the future be exactly the same as the books you can buy today? The answer to that
ques0on is no. In the future, you may only need to buy one book. With this one book, you wil be able to
read novels, plays, and newspapers. It wil look like today's books, but it wil be electronic.
One of the people working on the book of the future is Professor Joseph Jacobson from MassachuseZs
Ins0tute of Technology. Professor Jacobson's electronic book wil have a small buZon on the side. When
you press the buZon, words wil instantly appear on the page. When you want to read a different story, you
can push the buZon again and a new story wil quickly appear.
QuesTon 31: What is the main topic of the passage?
A. How to use an electronic book. B. Why a power source is important. C. The book of the future .
D. The decline of today's books.

Books wil disappear completely sooner or later.
B. In the future, computers wil replace paper books completely.
C. Reading words on computer screens is 0ring to the eyes.
D. Reading today’s books needs a power source.
QuesTon 33: The pronoun “It” refers to __________. A. electronic book B. play C. newspaper D. today’s book
QuesTon 34: The word “power” can be replaced by __________. A. strength B. energy C. computer D. book

Read the following passage and mark the le*er A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the ques?ons from 36 to 42.
There are two basic types of glaciers, those that flow outward in all direc0ons with liZle regard for any
underlying terrain and those that are confined by terrain to a par0cular path.
The first category of glaciers includes those massive blankets that cover whole con0nents, appropriately
called ice sheets. There must be over 50,000 square kilometers of land covered with ice for the glacier to
qualify as an ice sheet, when por0ons of an ice sheet spread out over the ocean, they form ice shelves.
About 20,000 years ago the Cordil eran Ice sheet covered nearly all the mountains in southern Alaska,
western Canada, and the western United States. It was about 3 kilometers deep at its thickest point in
northern Alberta. Now there are only two sheets leV on Earth, those covering Greenland and Antarc0ca.
Any domelike body of ice that also flows out in all direc0ons but covers less than 50,000 square
kilometers is called an ice cap. Although ice caps are rare nowadays, there are a number in northeastern
Canada, on Baffin Island, and on the Queen Elizabeth Islands. lOMoARcPSD|50582371
The second category of glaciers includes those of a variety of shapes and sizes generally called mountain
or alpine glaciers. Mountain glaciers are typically iden0fied by the landform that controls their flow. One
form of mountain glacier that resembles an ice cap in that it flows outward in several direc0ons is called an
ice field. The difference between an ice field and an ice cap is subtle . Essen0ally, the flow of an ice field is
somewhat control ed by surrounding terrain and thus does not have the domelike shape of a cap. There
are several ice fields in the Wrangel . St. Elias, and Chugach mountains of Alaska and northern Bri0sh Columbia.
Less spectacular than large ice fields are the most common types of mountain glaciers: the cirque and
valley glaciers. Cirque glaciers are found in depressions in the surface of the land and have a characteris0c
circular shape. The ice of valley glaciers, bound by terrain, flows down valleys, curves around their corners, and falls over cliffs.
