Who talk more men or women? Most people believe that women talk more. However, linguist Deborah
Tannen, who has studied the communica9on style of men and women, says that this is a stereotype. According
to Tannen, women are more verbal - talk more in private situa9ons, where they use conversa9on as the “glue”
to hold rela9onships together. But, she says, men talk more in public situa9ons, where they use conversa9on
to exchange informa9on and gain status. Tannen points out that we can see these differences even in children.
Li>le girls open play with one "best friend", their play includes a lot of conversa9on. Li>le boys open play
games in groups; their play usually involves more doing than talking. In school, girls are open be>er at verbal
skil s, boys are open be>er at mathema9cs.
A recent study at Emory University helps to shed light on the roots of this difference. Researchers studied
conversa9ons between children aged 3-6 and their parents. They found evidence that parents talk very
differently to their sons than they do to their daughters. The startling conclusion was that parents use more
language with their girls. Specifically, when parents talk with their daughters, they use more descrip9ve
language and more details. There is also far more talk about emo9ons, especially with daughters than with sons.

Children are not the face of this pandemic, but they risk being among its biggest vic9ms. While they
have thankful y been largely spared from the direct health effects of COVID-19 - at least to date the crisis is
having a profound effect on their wel being. Al children, of all ages, and in all countries, are being affected, in
par9cular by the socio-economic impacts and, in some cases, by mi9ga9on measures that may inadvertently
do more harm than good. This is a universal crisis and, for some children, the impact wil be lifelong. Moreover,
the harmful effects of this pandemic wil not be distributed equally. They are expected to be most damaging
for children in the poorest countries, and in the poorest neighborhoods, and for those in already
disadvantaged or vulnerable situa9ons.
There are three main channels through which children are affected by this crisis: infec9on with the
virus itself; the immediate socioeconomic impacts of measures to stop transmission of the virus and end the
pandemic; and the poten9al longer-term effects of delayed implementa9on of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Al of this is affec9ng children in mul9ple ways. An es9mated 42-66 mil ion children could fall into
extreme poverty as a result of the crisis this year, adding to the es9mated 386 mil ion children already in
extreme poverty in 2019. 188 countries have imposed countrywide school closures, affec9ng more than 1.5
bil ion children and youth. The poten9al losses that may accrue in learning for today’s young genera9on, and
for the development of their human capital, are hard to fathom. More than two-thirds of countries have
introduced a na9onal distance learning plauorm, but among lowincome countries the share is only 30 percent.
Before this crisis, almost one third of the world’s young people were already digitally excluded.
Lockdowns and shelter in place measures come with heightened risk of children witnessing or suffering
violence and abuse. Children in conflict sesuch as refugee and IDP se>lements, are also at considerable risk. Children’s reliance on online plauorms for
distance learning has also increased their risk of exposure to inappropriate content and online predators.
