Aside from just eating food to get energy, you also eat to get vitamins and minerals.
Vitamins and minerals don’t provide energy; they help your body run properly. Each
vitamin or mineral helps your body in different ways.
The vitamins are: A, B, C, D, E, and K. Vitamin A helps your eyes and immune system.
Vitamin B, actually a group of vitamins, helps your body to get the energy out of
carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. They also help with growth and making healthy blood.
If you see Thiamin, Niacin, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, and B12 on a food label, these are the
B vitamins. Vitamin C helps protect your cells, makes healthy fats in your skin, and gives
your immune system a boost. Vitamin D helps your body absorb the calcium you need
for your bones and teeth. You actually get this one from the sun, too. Vitamin E helps
protect your cells. Vitamin K helps your blood and bones.
There are a lot of minerals, but the main ones your body needs are: Calcium, Copper,
Iodine, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium, Selenium, Sodium and Zinc. You
won't see all of these on every food label, but you might see a lot of them on your cereal
boxes. Minerals generally help your body run correctly. They help your glands, organs,
and body work at its best. They support your immune system, help to regulate your
body’s functions like breathing, growing, your heart rate, and energy production, and do
many other things.
It is important to eat a variety of foods to get all of the vitamins and minerals. This
includes foods like: vegetables, beans, fruit, grains, proteins, and dairy. Each food gives
you a little of what you need. If you don't have a well - rounded diet, you might not be
getting all of what you need. Children's vitamins can help, but getting vitamins and
minerals from foods is the best way to get essential nutrients.
