Sharks have gained an unfair reputation for being fierce predators of large sea animals. Humanity’s unfounded
fear and hatred of the ancient creatures is leading to a worldwide slaughter that may result in the extinction of
many coastal shark species. The shark is the victim of a wrapped attitude of wildlife protection; we strive only to
protect the beautiful, non – threating parts of our environment. And, in our efforts to restore only non – threating
parts of our earth, we ignore other important parts. A perfect illustration of this attitude is the contrasting attitude
another large sea animal, the dolphin. During the 1908s, environmentalists in the United States protested the use
of driftnets for tuna fishing in the Pacific Ocean since these nets also caught dolphins. The environmentalists
generated enough political and economic pressure to prevent tuna companies from buying tuna that had been
caught in driftnets. In contrast to this effort on behalf of the dolphins, these same environmentalists have
decreased nearly to the point of extinction. Sharks among are the oldest creatures on earth, having survived in
the seas for more than 350 million years. They are extremely efficient animals, feeding on wounded or dying
animals, thus performing an important role in nature of wedding out the weaker animals in a species. Just the
fact that species such as the Great White Shark have managed to live in the ocean for so many millions of years
is enough poof of their efficiency and adaptability to changing environments. It is time for us humans, who may
not survive another 1,000 years at the rate we are damaging the planet, to cast away our fears and beging
considering the protection of sharks as an important part of a program for protection of all our natural
environment.
1. How did environmentalists manage to protect dolphins ?

D. 500 million years

A. strengthening something that is weak
B. feeding something that is hungry
C. encouraging something that is efficient
D. getting rid of something that is unwanted
5. What is the author’s tone in this passage ?
A. explanatory B. accusatory C. gentle D. proud
Reading 3 : Read the following passage and choose the best answers to the questions.
Water scarsity is fast becoming one of the major limiting factors in world crop production. In many areas, poor
agricultural practices have led to increasing desertification and the loss of formerly arable lands. Consequently,
those plants species that are well adapted to survival in dry climates are being looked at for an answer in developing
more efficient crops to grow on marginally arable lands. Plants use several mechanisms to ensure their survival in
desert environments. Some involve purely mechanical and physical adaptations, such as the shape of the plant’s
surface, smaller leaf size, and extensive root systems, some of the adaptations are related to chemical mechanisms.
Many plants, such as cacti, have internal gums and mucilages which give them water – retaining properties. Another
chemical mechanism is that of the epicuticular wax layer. This wax layer acts as an impervious cover to protect the
plant. It prevents excessive loss of internal moisture. It also protects the plant from external aggression, which can
come from inorganic agents such as gases, or organic agents which include bacteria ant plant pets.Researchers
have proposed that synthetic waxes with similar protective abilities could be prepared based on knowledge of desert
plants. If successfully developed, such as a compound could be used to greatly increase a plant’s ability to maintain
health in such adverse situations as inadequate water supply, limited fertilizes availability, attacked by pets, and poor
storage after harvesting.

protect the beautiful, non – threating parts of our environment. And, in our efforts to restore only non – threating
parts of our earth, we ignore other important parts. A perfect il ustration of this attitude is the contrasting attitude
another large sea animal, the dolphin.
Sharks among are the oldest creatures on earth, having survived in
the seas for more than 350 mil ion years. They are extremely efficient animals, feeding on wounded or dying
animals, thus performing an important role in nature of wedding out the weaker animals in a species. Just the
fact that species such as the Great White Shark have managed to live in the ocean for so many mil ions of years
is enough poof of their efficiency and adaptability to changing environments. It is time for us humans, who may
not survive another 1,000 years at the rate we are damaging the planet, to cast away our fears and beging
considering the protection of sharks as an important part of a program for protection of al our natural environment.

Reading 3 : Read the following passage and choose the best answers to the questions.
Water scarsity is fast becoming one of the major limiting factors in world crop production. In many areas, poor
agricultural practices have led to increasing desertification and the loss of formerly arable lands. Consequently,
those plants species that are wel adapted to survival in dry climates are being looked at for an answer in developing
more efficient crops to grow on marginal y arable lands. Plants use several mechanisms to ensure their survival in
desert environments. Some involve purely mechanical and physical adaptations, such as the shape of the plant’s
surface, smal er leaf size, and extensive root systems, some of the adaptations are related to chemical mechanisms.
Many plants, such as cacti, have internal gums and mucilages which give them water – retaining properties. Another
chemical mechanism is that of the epicuticular wax layer. This wax layer acts as an impervious cover to protect the
plant. It prevents excessive loss of internal moisture. It also protects the plant from external aggression, which can
come from inorganic agents such as gases, or organic agents which include bacteria ant plant pets.Researchers
have proposed that synthetic waxes with similar protective abilities could be prepared based on knowledge of desert
plants. If successful y developed, such as a compound could be used to greatly increase a plant’s ability to maintain
health in such adverse situations as inadequate water supply, limited fertilizes availability, attacked by pets, and poor storage after harvesting.

4. Which is one of the ways in which the epicuticular wax protects the plant ?
A. It helps the plant to avoid excessive moisture intake
B. It helps the plant to attack aggressors.
C. It releases gases against plant pets D. It guards against bacteria.
