Write your answers (A, B, C or D) in the corresponding numbered boxes. (0.5 point)
Foot racing is a popular activity in the United States. It is seen not only as a
competitive sport but also as a way to exercise, to enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded
people, and to donate money to a good cause. Though serious runners may spend months
training to compete, other runners and walkers might not train at all. Those not competing to
win might run in an effort to beat their own time or simply to enjoy the fun and exercise.
People of all ages, from those of less than one year (who may be pushed in strollers) to
those in their eighties, enter into this sport. The races are held on city streets, on college
campuses, through parks, and in suburban areas, and they are commonly 5 to 10 kilometers
in length.
The largest footrace in the world is the 12-kilometer Bay to Breakers race that is held
in San Francisco every spring. This race begins on the east side of the city near San
Francisco Bay and ends on the west side at the Pacific Ocean. There may be 80,000 or more
people running in this race through the streets and hills of San Francisco. In the front are the
serious runners who compete to win and who might finish in as little as 34 minutes. Behind
them are the thousands who take several hours to finish. In the back of the race are those
who dress in costumes and come just for fun. One year, there was a group of men who
dressed like Elvis Presley, and another group consisted of firefighters who were tied
together in a long line and who were carrying a fire hose. There was even a bridal party, in
which the bride was dressed in a long white gown and the groom wore a tuxedo. The bride
and groom threw flowers to bystanders, and they were actually married at some point along
the route.

III. Read the passage below and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
Write your answers (A, B, C or D) in the corresponding numbered boxes. (0.5 point)
Many people now think that teachers give students too much homework. They say
that it is unnecessary for children to work at home in their free time. Moreover, they argue
that most teachers do not properly plan the homework tasks they give to students. The
result is that students have to repeat tasks which they have already done at school.
Recently in Greece, many parents complained about the difficult homework which
teachers gave to their children. The parents said that most of the homework was a waste of
time, and they wanted to stop it. Spain and Turkey are two countries which have stopped
homework recently. In Denmark, West Germany and several other countries in Europe,
teachers cannot set homework at weekends. In Holland, teachers allow students to stay at
school to do their homework. The children are free to help one another. Similar
arrangements also exist in some British schools.
Most people agree that homework is unfair. A student who can do his homework in a
quiet and comfortable room is in a much better position than a student who does his
homework in a small room with the television on. Some parents help their children with
their homework. Other parents take no interest at all in their children's homework.
It is important, however, that teachers talk to parents about homework. A teacher
should suggest suitable tasks for parents to do with their children. Parents are often better at
teaching their own children.
1. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. People protest against children’s doing homework in some countries.
B. That children have to do homework is unfair.
C. Parents should help their children to do homework.
D. It is necessary for teachers to plan the homework tasks in advance.
2. The word “properly” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to_______.
A. attentively B. suitably C. complicatedly D. confusedly
3. It can be inferred from the passage that______.
A. a good working environment helps students to do their homework more effectively
B. comfortable rooms help students to have better social positions in the future
C. small rooms equipped with TV sets help students to get more information for their
homework
D. children in poor families have to share small rooms and do homework together
4. Which of the following statements is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Students have to do their tasks repeatedly.
B. In some countries, students are allowed to do their homework at school.
C. Some parents pay no attention to their children’s homework.
D. It is essential that parents assign their children homework rather than teachers.
5. The pronoun “their” in the last paragraph refers to______.
