III. Read the following passage and circle the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions. (0.8 point) THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT
Scientists believe that something very serious is happening to the Earth. It is
becoming warmer. Scientists predict that there will be major changes in the climate during
the 21st century. Coastal waters will have higher temperatures. This will have a serious
effect on agriculture. Farmers will have trouble producing good crops. In warm regions 4
the weather will be too dry. The amount of water could decrease by 50 percent. This
would cause a large decrease in agricultural production.
World temperatures could increase from 1.5 to 5.6 degrees Celsius by the middle of
the 21st century. And the increase in temperature could be even greater in the Arctic and
Antarctic regions. A rise in temperature could cause the great ice sheets to melt, which, in
turn would raise the level of the oceans by one to two metres. Many coastal cities would
be underwater. Why is all this happening?
The Earth and its atmosphere are kept warm by the Sun. The atmosphere lets most of
the light from the Sun pass through to warm the Earth. The Earth is warmed by the
sunlight and sends heat energy back into the atmosphere. Much of this energy escapes
from the Earth’s atmosphere. However, some of it remains. Gases such as carbon dioxide,
ozone and water vapor absorb this energy and create more heat. Then this heat is sent back
down to Earth, and the Earth becomes warmer.
Recently, however, an increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is causing
serious problems. Too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere prevents heat energy from
escaping. Too much heat is sent back down to the Earth. And the amount of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere continues to increase. When oil, gas, and coal burn, they create
large amounts of carbon dioxide. The destruction of rain forests that absorb carbon dioxide
also helps to increase the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Some scientists
believe that the amount of carbon dioxide in the air will double by the late 2000s.
Scientists call this warming of the Earth and its atmosphere the “greenhouse effect.”
A greenhouse, made of glass or plastic, is a special place where plants are grown. The
sunlight passes through the glass or plastic and warms the air inside. The heat inside
escapes very slowly, so the greenhouse remains very warm. This is exactly what is happening on earth.
Another reason why the Earth is growing warmer is because of the amount of ozone
in our atmosphere. Ozone is a form of oxygen. In the upper atmosphere, very far from the
Earth, a layer of ozone helps to protect the Earth from 95 percent of the harmful light that
comes from the Sun. If your skin receives too much of this light, you could develop skin
cancer. We need the ozone layer to protect ourselves. But the ozone layer is in trouble.
Scientists have observed that the ozone layer is becoming thin, and above the Antarctica
there is a hole. This allows too much of the Sun’s dangerous light into our atmosphere and makes the Earth warmer.
1. Which of the following will be one of the consequences of a warmer earth?
A. Crops will be poor unless they are grown in green houses.
B. The amount of water will decrease by half.
C. Farmers will get into trouble because of the heat.
D. There will be no winter on earth.
2. A rise in temperature will be more remarkable__________.
A. in the Arctic and Antarctic regions B. in the coastal cities C. by the year 2050 D. under the great ice sheets
3. The melting of the polar ice sheets will probably lead to __________.
A. a rise in global temperatures
B. the extinction of many polar animals
C. the flooding of many coastal cities
D. a severe winter all over the world 5
4. The Earth wouldn’t become warmer if __________.
A. the heat energy didn’t escape from the Earth’s atmosphere
B. sunlight didn’t pass through the atmosphere
C. the Earth didn’t send heat energy back into the atmosphere.
D. carbon dioxide, ozone and water vapor didn’t retain the heat energy
5. When rain forests are destroyed __________.
A. people have to burn oil, gas and coal instead of wood for fuel
B. heat energy fails to escape from the atmosphere
C. there is nothing to absorb carbon dioxide
D. serious problems are caused for the scientists
6. It is obvious that __________.
A. greenhouses are responsible for the warming of the Earth
B. what is happening on earth is comparable to what happens in a greenhouse
C. greenhouses should be banned to prevent the warming of the Earth
D. things wouldn’t be so bad if greenhouses were not made of glass or plastic
7. How useful is the ozone layer?
A. It protects the Earth from most of the harmful radiation from the Sun.
B. It absorbs much of the carbon dioxide.
C. It sends the extra heat energy back into space and thus keeps the Earth cool. D. It helps treat skin cancer.
8. What can be inferred from the text?
A. The destruction of rain forests and the melting of the polar ice make the Earth warmer.
B. The burning of fossil fuels decreases the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
C. The increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the decrease of the ozone layer
directly cause the greenhouse effect.
D. Greenhouses contribute much to the development of skin cancer.
IV. Read an article for American teenagers going overseas to study. Seven sentences
have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-H the one which fits
each gap (1-7). Write your answers in the numbered space. There is one extra sentence
which you do not need to use. (0.7 point) STUDYING ABROAD
Have you always dreamed of travelling, meeting lots of different people, and maybe
picking up a language or two? No matter what country you live in, you can fly over the
world’s highest waterfalls in Venezuela, learn world trade in Japan, study in France, or take dancing lessons in Ghana.
How? (1) ____________ Semester, summer, and year-long programs allow you to
attend school, take intensive language courses, or perform community service in another
country. Read on to learn more about abroad programs.
Besides the excitement of travel, you will experience new customs, holidays, food,
art, music, and politics firsthand. (2) ____________ This is because your viewpoint will
be of an active member of the community, not as a tourist.
Another reason for studying abroad is that you will become more self-assured.
Christina studied in Caracas, Venezuela, a city of 10 million people and a huge change
from her hometown of 35,000! Christina says she learned how to be better at standing up
for herself and her beliefs and to express herself in another language. (3) ____________ In
addition, living away from home can also help you adjust in the transition to college and 6
adulthood. Matthew says when he was more mature and had a genuine interest in
international affairs that really set him apart from his peers. “After having gone abroad in
high school, I found the transition to college to be straightforward- moving 560 miles from
home didn’t seem particularly daunting after having lived thousands of miles away.”
Although many academic programs abroad have academic requirements, you do not
necessarily have to have the highest grades or marks to be eligible. (4) ____________
Who you are is as important as your academic record. Study programs abroad look for
students who are independent, self-assured, enjoy new experiences and different types of
people, and can handle challenges.
If you really hate change and don’t like the idea of figuring things out all on your
own, then studying abroad may not be for you. It’s important to be honest with yourself
and really think about what you expect. (5) ____________ Of course, if you want to
change those things about yourself and don’t mind tackling them head on, then studying
abroad may be an ideal way to take the plunge.
Are you convinced that a year abroad is for you, but you’re worried that your parents
will never go for it? (6) ____________ Point out that studying abroad is a chance of a
lifetime and that it offers great academic opportunities.
You might also sell them on the idea that students in study programs abroad gain
experiences by being in a new culture, broaden their horizons, and increase their maturity
and self-confidence levels. (7) ____________ These language skills, cross-cultural
experiences, and global outlooks are becoming essential.
A. Use some of the points of view that sold you on the idea to explain why you want to study overseas.
B. But perhaps, more importantly, the different circumstances mean you will learn a
lot not only about cultures and people but also about yourself.
C. You could join a study program abroad, where high school and college students
live with a host family in a foreign country.
D. What could give you more self-confidence than that?
E. You will have forgotten any doubts you once had about your decision.
F. And most do not have language requirements.
G. You could end up having a miserable time if you don’t!
H. By studying abroad you will have an educational advantage when entering college or starting a career.
