Jenny: Hi, uncle!
Uncle: Oh! Hello, Jenny. How are you?
Jenny: I’m fine. Uncle, is it true you’ve lived on this street for fifty years?
Uncle: Who told you that?
Jenny: Mom did!
Uncle: Did she really? Well, it’s not true. Actually, I’ve lived here for fifty-six years!
Jenny: Wow! I bet the town has changed a lot since then.
Uncle: Oh, that’s right. It’s changed very much. Back then, the town was much smaller
and more rural. Businesses didn’t want to invest in the town, so there were no jobs here.
This whole street lived in poverty.
Jenny: In poverty?
Uncle: I mean we were poor! Those were very hard times. We often didn’t have enough
money to buy food or school uniforms.
Jenny: Oh ... But things changed, right?
Uncle: You’re right, they did. The car factory was built when I was eighteen years old,
and I got my first job there. After that, the infrastructure improved. More and more
businesses moved into town. Every year since then, our town has grown. They knocked
down my old school and built your school in its place. They’ve built skyscrapers and
shopping centers all over the town, too.
Jenny: Uncle, do you have any pictures from the old days?
Uncle: Sure, I do! Let’s see. Look! This is me on my first day of school!
Jenny: That’s you? You look so small and thin! And what are you wearing?
Uncle: Well, it’s like I told you. Those were hard times ...

Ten years ago, my town was much smaller. We didn’t have a supermarket or a cinema.
And there were no tall buildings. A few years ago, a lot of money was invested in my
town. I know this because a shopping center was built with a supermarket and a cinema
inside. When I was young, the roads had a lot of holes. It took a long time to get to
school. Now, the roads have been repaired, and the cars drive very fast. Many new
houses have been built, and the old houses have been repainted. Lots of people moved
hare from the country, so the town has grown a lot.
