PREFACE
LƯU HÀNH NỘI BỘ
This course book aims to equip students with knowledge to train their Reading skill
and help them to do tests of TOEIC. Its content includes subject and verb agreement,
adjectives and adverbs, and types of reading texts and reading strategies for each type in
TOEIC reading test.
Chapter 1 includes 05 lessons, chapter 2 consists of 5 lessons, chapter 3 includes
lessons. This book gives students an opportunity to develop skills in writing. Many
exercises help students quickly improve writing skills through language material selected
from real tests. Each lesson has goals, which are clearly written, helping students obtain
what they need after a lesson. At the completion of this course, students will be able to
identify subject and verb agreement, adjectives and adverbs, types of reading texts in TOEIC
reading test, subject and verb agreement, adjectives and adverbs in TOEIC reading test part 5
and 6, types of reading texts and reading strategies for each type in TOEIC reading test part
7, and apply acquired knowledge and skills in doing TOEIC reading test with the average
score of 150 over 495 points. Although a great effort has been made during the time
researching and compiling this course book, limitations, of course, are unavoidable.

(Singular / Plural Nouns)
I. Singular subject - singular verb, plural subject - plural verb
1.1. Types of Subjects
The basic rule is that a singular subject goes with a singular verb, while a plural subject goes
with a plural verb. Besides, you must use singular verbs in the following cases:
When the subject is an uncountable noun
When the subject is a gerund or a to-infinitive
When the subject is a noun clause introduced by that

(Conjunctions)
I. Conjunctions
1.1. Coordinating conjunctions and & or
When the subjects in a sentence are joined by the conjunction and, a plural verb is
commonly used. When the subjects are joined by the conjunction or, their verb must agree
with the subject nearest to it.
The CEO and the manager are having a meeting now.
Three workers or one supervisor has to work on Saturdays.
1.2. Correlative conjunctions
When the two subjects in a sentence are joined by correlative conjunctions, their verb
mostly takes the number of the subject nearest to it. In the following structures, the verb will
