With a shout of "Here we go!", Yuri Gagarin lied o into space aboard the Vostok I at 9:07 a.m. Moscow me
on April 12, 1961 and approximately 12 minutes later, the rst human being was in orbit around the Earth. His ight
lasted 108 minutes.
Thi HSG 12-2007/ English 12/ page 4 of 8
82
When Yuri Gagarin said goodbye to his family and prepared to leave the planet, there was sll enormous
uncertainty. No one knew precisely what would happen to a human being in space. How would the body react to the
extreme changes in temperature? How would the mind deal with the psychological tension? With a technical failure,
Gagarin could never be back to Earth.
83
At a speed of more than 17,000 miles per hour, the 27-year-old Soviet cosmonaut circled the Earth. He also
became the rst person to eat and drink in weightlessness. From his window in space, Gagarin had a view of Earth that
no human had before. The rst words spoken from space were: "I see Earth. It's so beauful!"
84
Gagarin's ight aracted worldwide aenon and made him a hero. In a telegram to Moscow, U.S. President
John F. Kennedy wrote, "The people of the United States share with the people of the Soviet Union their sasfacon for
the safe ight of the astronaut in man's rst venture into space. We congratulate you and the Soviet sciensts and
engineers who made this feat possible. ..."
85
The pioneer cosmonaut could have fullled his ambion of making a new space ight if the tragic accident
had not occurred. He died in a plane crash on a roune training ight in March 1968. Aer his death, his hometown of
Gzhatsk was renamed Gagarin, and the Cosmonaut Training Center at Star City, Russia, was given the name of this
naonal hero.
Part 3: Read the following passage and ll the blank with ONE suitable word. Write your answers in the space
provided below the passage.
Sugar was for a long me a luxury and in the opinion of the medical profession it sll should be. During the nineteenth
century, however, manufacturers discovered ways of producing it in vast quanes and it has since become (86)____
of the staple arcles of diet, parcularly among the lower social classes. It has the advantages of being comparavely
cheap, easily digested, rich in energy and useful for avouring. Its major (87) ____ are that it lacks every nourishing

Part 4: Read the passages below carefully. Then choose the best answer for each of the four quesons that follow.
Circle A, B, C, D or E to indicate your choice.
The following are leers to the editor of a school newspaper.
Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators are becoming aware
of the fact that students have dierent interests and abilies. However, the regimentaon resulng from grades sll
exists. Grades oen se creavity. Compeng for beer grades causes many students to turn down opportunies to
pursue music, dramacs and sports. Grades impose an arbitrary standard of success on everyone. I do not demand as
some extremists do, that grades be abolished immediately. However, I do believe that less emphasis should be placed
on grades. I hope that someday grades will become oponal at Village High School.
Magdalena Smith, President,
Drama Club
Let's face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic funcons. First, grades movate students to work at their
highest level of competence. Second, they act as a reward for hardworking students and as a reprimand
Thi HSG 12-2007/ English 12/ page 5 of 8
to students who do not work hard. Finally, grades are used as an eecve standard by which to measure student
achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university. I've spoken with a number of students
who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired primarily on the basis of their grades. My grades helped me
land a part-me job and will help me get into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village
High School.
Simon Harper, Member,
Science Club
96. Simon Harper writes from the viewpoint of someone whoA wants business to hire more students.
B believes in the benets of good grades.
C is concerned about students' creavity.
D supports students' interests and abilies.E doesn't work too hard at his studies.
97. Magdalena Smith thinks it is important for
A students to get good jobs
B students to parcipate in music, dramacs, and sports
C students to compete more for gradesD educators to have more control over grades
E students to be reprimanded for not working hard.
98. Which of the following states is a fact about grades at Village High School? A They
are not useful
B They se creavity
C They foster unnecessary compeonD They should be oponal
E They are currently in use.
99. Which of the following is NOT an opinion expressed by Magdalena Smith?
A Grades should be abolished.
B Regimentaon results from grades.
C Grades impose arbitrary standards of success.
D Students should be able to learn without worrying about grades.
E Compeon may discourage students from pursuing subjects such as drama and art.
100. Good grades will mainly enable students A to work at their highest level of competence.
B to go to university.
C to land a part-me job.
D to get a job at a village high school.E to perform basic funcons.
IV. WRITING ( 6 points)

With a shout of "Here we go!", Yuri Gagarin lifted off into space aboard the Vostok I at 9:07 a.m. Moscow time
on April 12, 1961 and approximately 12 minutes later, the first human being was in orbit around the Earth. His flight lasted 108 minutes.
Thi HSG 12-2007/ English 12/ page 4 of 8 82
When Yuri Gagarin said goodbye to his family and prepared to leave the planet, there was still enormous
uncertainty.
He also
became the first person to eat and drink in weightlessness. From his window in space, Gagarin had a view of Earth that
no human had before. The first words spoken from space were: "I see Earth. It's so beautiful!" 84
Gagarin's flight attracted worldwide attention and made him a hero. In a telegram to Moscow, U.S. President
John F. Kennedy wrote, "The people of the United States share with the people of the Soviet Union their satisfaction for
the safe flight of the astronaut in man's first venture into space. We congratulate you and the Soviet scientists and
engineers who made this feat possible. ..." 85
The pioneer cosmonaut could have fulfilled his ambition of making a new space flight if the tragic accident
had not occurred. He died in a plane crash on a routine training flight in March 1968. After his death, his hometown of
Gzhatsk was renamed Gagarin, and the Cosmonaut Training Center at Star City, Russia, was given the name of this national hero.

Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators are becoming aware
of the fact that students have different interests and abilities. However, the regimentation resulting from grades still
exists. Grades often stifle creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to
pursue music, dramatics and sports. Grades impose an arbitrary standard of success on everyone. I do not demand as
some extremists do, that grades be abolished immediately. However, I do believe that less emphasis should be placed
on grades. I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village High School. Magdalena Smith, President, Drama Club
Let's face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades motivate students to work at their
highest level of competence. Second, they act as a reward for hardworking students and as a reprimand

to students who do not work hard. Finally, grades are used as an effective standard by which to measure student
achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university. I've spoken with a number of students
who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired primarily on the basis of their grades. My grades helped me
land a part-time job and will help me get into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School. Simon Harper, Member, Science Club
