day. On any given call, an interpreter can assist delivering a baby, help a school nurse communicate with a
parent or support a customer opening a new savings account.
LanguageLine Solutions provides ongoing coaching and paid training programs to interpreters. We also
celebrate our interpreters’ achievements and knowledge through the Performance, Experience And
Knowledge (PEAK) Program. This program recognizes our interpreters’ excellence in the field and
important contributions to our company and society as a whole. Interpreters receive award certificates based
on the following tiers of experience:
PEAK Awards for Interpreters:
o Professional Interpreter 2,000 hours of
interpretation o Senior Interpreter 5,000 hours of
interpretation o Master Interpreter 10,000 hours of
interpretation
What Is Interpretation?
Language interpretation is the act of accurately and completely explaining the meaning of a message
expressed in one language in a second language.
The majority of our interpreters are hired for over-the-phone interpretation positions, while others take
onsite or video remote interpretation work.
At LanguageLine Solutions, most interpreters will answer calls over the phone. Each call is a three-way
conversation between the interpreter, our client, and the Limited English speaker (referred to as the LEP).
Video interpreters will see both the LEP and the client, and render information in real time.
Common interactions for over-the-phone and video interpretation include: o
A medical visit to complete a Medicaid form o A police report
o A 9-1-1 emergency o A financial transaction, such
as opening a o An accident report to an insurance
company checking account o A credit card application
Frequent scenarios that require our interpreters to be onsite include healthcare, social services and
government agencies visits.
All of our interpreters follow national and international standards for interpreter protocol. They are trained to
understand these protocols, and follow them accordingly. An interpreter is expected to be able to accurately
render information in two languages, while maintaining the pace of the conversation and keeping a neutral
point of view.
Many interpreters work for LanguageLine Solutions for numerous years, gaining valuable business
interpretation skills along the way.

Skills Needed to Become an Interpreter
LanguageLine Solutions interpreters are educated in both English and a second or third language. They have
demonstrated native, or near native proficiency, in English and another language. Successful candidates
demonstrate:

Type of Interpreter Positions
LanguageLine Solutions hires interpreters for the three types of interpreting services we offer our clients:
Over-the-Phone Interpreter (OPI) Video Remote Interpreter (VRI) On-Site Interpreter (OSI)
OPI: Depending on your previous experience and education, there are different levels of Over-the-Phone
positions available. Those new to the field may start at an entry level and progress to more advanced levels
through training, testing, and excellence on the job. Those that already have experience interpreting for
government, medical or insurance clients may start at a more advanced level after completing our testing
and training.
VRI: A video remote interpreter uses cutting-edge video technology to communicate with our customers.
Candidates for these positions must have experience and advanced knowledge of terminology in the medical
and/or insurance industries.
OSI: LanguageLine Solutions also seeks on-site interpreters who have at least two years of experience in the
medical field. Certification in healthcare interpreting is a plus. Interpreters must reside within 50 miles of
the specified area in the job description. In some cases, onsite interpreters also may work as an over-the-
phone interpreter.
Interpretation services for a variety of calls: Client calls
On a typical day, calls come from a variety of clients, locations and services. Interpreters provide service to
local, state, national and international LanguageLine Solutions clients such as:
