Describe one of your typical days. You should say: ● how you start your day
● how long you have been following this routine
● your favorite time and activity of a day
● and explain what you do on a typical day of your life.
I am still a student, and I have a daily routine that mostly circles around my classes,
friends and studies. I spend my days mostly adhering to this routine except for
Sundays when I do not follow a specific routine.
I get up early in the morning, mostly at around 6:30 am and take a shower. A hot-
refreshing shower makes me ready to take on the challenges of the day! I eat my
breakfast and then get ready for university. I reach my university roughly at 8:30 am
and attend the classes till 3:00 pm. I eat my lunch at around 1:00 pm from the
university cafeteria. I usually spend some time with my classmates after classes and
return home at around 4:30 pm. I take some rest and go to nearby fields in the
evening. I walk for an hour and return home at 6:30 pm. Sometimes I play football with my friends.
In the evening, I eat some light snacks and then concentrate on my studies. I usually
read till 9:00 pm and then spend a few minutes browsing the internet. I usually
browse the internet for about 1-2 hours a day. I eat my supper at 11:00 pm and then
read for another hour. Before I go to bed I brush my teeth and read a novel. I read
the novel for around 40 minutes to 1:30 hours and then fall asleep. 1
Describe what you usually do in your leisure time. You should say: ● what you do ● who you do it with ● where you do it
● and explain why you like to spend your free time this way.
Finding little leisure time in this modern, tough and complicated world, where we are
all so busy, is never an easy proposition. And, this holds true at least for me. So,
whenever I manage some leisure time, I make sure that I do make the best use of it by visiting a nearby park.
Yes, as I've just mentioned, I like to visit a park, preferably having a lake in it, with
some of my friends and neighbors whenever I get an opportunity (by the way,
sometimes, I have to go alone because others may have different priorities). I also
don’t forget to grab a food basket and a blanket/bed sheet for a lazy feast on the
grassy lawn of the park unless, of course, it rains. Finally, accompany us are some
fishing rods and camera as well.
Anyway, once we arrive at the park, the first thing we do is to wander around in it for
a while and warm ourselves up for the next big “thing”, which is taking pictures of
different kinds of plants, as well as the local animal residents who are never scared
to get “cozy” with us. Our picture taking activities, while wandering around, continue
until we get tired and hungry. So, we just grab our food and eat them for as long as
we can in a very lazy manner by sitting on the grassy park lawns. Food makes us
even more tired and lazy, because of eating too much of it, but never tired enough to
do our next significant thing, which is to do some fishing in the lake. Needless to say,
of course, we seldom catch any fish, not even after making some “valiant” efforts.
I like to spend my leisure time in this way mainly because it perfectly fits with my
“laidback” lifestyle. Besides, it allows me to get close to Mother Nature and to enjoy it
while also doing some fun and recreational activities. Finally, it helps me recover 2
from the hectic work schedules of a long week. 3
Describe a song you like (Describe a piece of music you like). You should say: ● What it is?
● Which country the song comes from? ● What story the song tells?
● And explain why you think it is interesting?
I have always been a huge fan of music. I love listening to music because good
music helps me recharge my battery and energy as well as uplift my spirit after a
long day overloaded with work and study. I honestly don’t have my favorite genre as
my playlist includes all kinds of music. But if you want me to pick a song that I like
the most, it would definitely be “Happy” by Williams Pharrell.
“Happy” is a song with cheerful beat and exuberant vocal taken from the OST of the
movie “Despicable Me 2” although it was first featured as the lead single taken from
Pharrell’s second solo album entitled ‘G I R L’.
One thing that I really do enjoy about “Happy” is that it doesn’t fall under the
classification of EDM. You can relegate “Happy” more to the “old school” category
because you can clearly hear the influences of Motown Records throughout the song.
It does make sense, therefore, why Pharrell opted for a more classic and refined
approach to the production of “Happy”. Pharrell certainly does an excellent job in
helping provide mainstream listeners a “breath of fresh air” from all the EDM-laced
influences. In addition, he delivers all his words with so much ease that it almost
sounds effortless on his part. Plus, there is also that very distinctive soulful quality to
his voice, which adds to the mass appeal and friendly warmth of this single.
The message is clear. It is all about maintaining a positive state of mind despite how
gloomy and sometimes disheartening events can be. When you can have a cheerful
disposition in life, everything will look brighter and way better than it really is. 4
In a way, “Happy” is a rare kind of song because it offers the listeners a hearty dose
of innocent fun and makes them look at the inner child in themselves as opposed to
being one of the hundred pop songs that are either about love or money. 5
Describe a piece of modern technology you own. You should say: ● what it is ● what you use it for ● how long you have owned it
● and explain why it is important to you.
I bought it about ten years ago when my first nephew was born. I purchased it to
record the activities and invaluable moments of my first nephew. Since then, I have
never really stopped using this modern technology.
The name of this modern technology is "video camera". It is a basic “point-and-
shoot” video camera, with a size of about 108 millimeters ( or 4.25 inches), and it
weighs about 265 grams. Coming in shiny black color, this camera is made by
Canon and is also affordable, compared to some other basic video cameras in its
class. Offering a zoom range of 5 to 15 times, this camera also has a bigger and
better lens for its price. It also has a video resolution of 1600 x 1180.
Anyway, after buying it, initially, I didn’t really find much use for it except, of course,
recording every little moment of my nephew, but as more and more time passed, I
became interested in using it for other purposes and activities. Gradually, I started to
carry it outside with me, when traveling to any place, and then also started to make
videos of nature around me. The more I was using it, the better I was feeling about
my camera and my work. Later on, I felt bold enough to carry my camera even to
some parties, like weddings and birthdays, in order to capture the fun and happy
moments. After that, I never really looked back, as I carried my little camera pretty
much everywhere with me like a trusted friend.
My video camera is important to me because it allows me to capture the favorite
moments of my life, as well as the life of other important people around me, on my
own terms. Besides, it keeps me busy when I don’t really feel like doing anything 6
constructive or feel bored. Finally, it also allows me to look back to some of my
favorite moments of the past when I feel down and depressed. 7
Describe a news story you have read or heard about recently. You should say: ● what it was ● when you heard / read it ● what you thought about it
● And explain why you remember this news story.
I read the newspaper regularly. Today, I’m going to talk about a latest news that was exciting for many people.
The story was about India’s biggest test victory outside Asia. The Indian cricket team
thrashed West Indies by an innings and 92 runs in the first test match. This was a
challenging match as the opponents are known for their record breaking runs in test cricket.
I think this win was particularly crucial for the Indian team to prove their potential as
the team was playing with a new coach. Apart from that, there were many young
players who were participating in their first international test match. The result of this
match was an achievement for the whole team and the nation.
Since cricket is a very popular sport in my hometown, almost everyone in my
neighborhood was talking about this match. I found it fascinating because cricket is
my favorite sport and I am the captain of my school team. We have played many
state and national level matches. In the future, I want to be a part of the Indian
cricket team so that I can bring laurels to my country. This thumping victory was very
motivating and encouraging to me because I am a bowler and bowlers can be the
game changers in this unpredictable game. 8
Describe the most important benefit of the internet. You should say: ● what it is ● why you prefer it
● how people/students can take advantage of this benefit
● and explain the importance of it in your country.
No doubt that the internet is one of the greatest inventions, if not the greatest, of all
time which has certainly changed our world for good. In fact, the possibilities of the
internet are simply endless, if used properly, as there are so many important benefits
of using it, no matter what we do and which part of the world we live in.
To begin with, one of the most important benefits of the internet is that it allows us to
connect and communicate, by supplying an endless amount of knowledge and
information, with each other in an instant manner which was unimaginable before its
invention about several decades ago. In fact, in the past, it would take days, and
sometimes even months, to receive a letter from someone else. But, today, with the
internet, we can send an email (electronic mail) or even “instant messages” to
anyone in the world and have it delivered, along with loads of information, in seconds!
Anyway, while different people prefer the internet for different reasons, I prefer it
because it allows me to chat with my friends and families instantly, with the help of
social media and different chat messengers, while also seeing them live no matter
where I live. Students can also take advantage of such benefits, provided by the
internet, by researching different kinds of data and information on the world wide
web which would ultimately help them to prepare important research papers and
other important documents from the comfort of their homes without ever visiting a library. 9
Describe a book that had a major influence on you You should say:
● What is the name of the book?
● How did you first hear of the book?
● What’s the main story of the book?
Well, I am quite fond of reading books. In fact, I love to read all types of books such
as religious, comic thriller and motivational books. As you ask me to talk about a
book that influenced me most, I strongly believe that one book named “The Power of
Subconscious Mind” has changed my whole life in a positive way.
This is a motivational book which is written by Dr. Joseph Murphy. My husband told
me about this book and I decided to read it. Then, I purchased this book from the
Amazon store. When I started to read it, I realized the real meaning of conscious and
subconscious mind and how it works? As I have told you before that this is a
motivational book and it is all about different stages of our mind. In this novel, there
are so many short real stories which show that with the help of our subconscious
mind anyone can get anything which they want.
One story that attracts me most in this book is about one old lady who is suffering
from physical disability and doctors said to her that she would not be able to walk
herself in her whole life but she knew about the power of the subconscious mind. So,
she did not give up. When any person asked her about her illness, then she smiled
and replied she is alright and will walk on her feet very soon. After one month she
stands properly and walks as well.
Moreover, in this book, there are so many other stories which told me that the will
power of our internal mind works for us. This book influences me a lot. Before
reading this book, I always thought about the negative and positive aspects of
anything. I was less confident as well. However, After reading the stories in this book,
now I am more self-confident as well as I always see the bright side of anything. 10
I live my life as I want and achieve so many things with the power of the
subconscious mind. According to my own perspective, this book is just like a miracle
and everyone should read it once. 11
Describe an important invention that you think has positively influenced the human race. You should say: ● what the invention is ● who invented it
● what changes it has brought
● and explain how it has positively influenced the human race.
Over the last couple of centuries, our world has been lucky enough to see many
important innovations, which have brought many positive changes to the life of its
inhabitants. However, I would like to talk about one of those innovations here today
which probably has done more to influence the entire human race than anything else in the world.
The name of this particular innovation is “Telephone”. In plain English, it is a device
that converts sound and electrical waves into audible relays and is used for
communication by using a microphone and speaker.
Many people had tried to play with the idea of coming up with such innovation, but it
was Mr Alexander Graham Bell, who finally succeeded in doing it in 1876. Of
course, as with every other thing, when the telephone was first introduced, only the
rich people could afford it as the materials needed to use or connect the device were
quite expensive. But, as people slowly started to understand its full potential, the
telephone became an every household item, as it allowed them to communicate with
each other seamlessly, no matter where they lived, whether they were maintaining a
long-distance relationship or doing a multi-million dollar business in another country.
In fact, communication would never be the same after the introduction of the telephone.
Anyway, the positive influence of the telephone can be seen in the ease of
communication and carrying on with our daily activities 24 hours a day and 365 days 12
a year without any interruption. It also led to the development of city centers, office
buildings and the concept of an urban worker society. Besides, it has also led to the
creation of many jobs by changing the pace of business. The telephone has also
provided security and helped in emergencies. However, probably the most positive
influence has come in the form of a whole host of new inventions, like the
smartphone and the internet, with which, we can now not only talk but also see each
other live on video at the same time. 13
Describe an advertisement you like. You should say:
● what type of advertisement it is
● what product or service it advertises
● where and when you first saw it
● and explain why you like it and think that this advertisement is effective.
Every day we watch several advertisements on TV and computers whether we like to
watch them or not. And some of these adverts are simply dull, some are average
while a few of them are very interesting and creative. One such advertisement that I
really liked was about the unmatched contributions of mothers to their children, and I
really liked the theme of this advertisement. I watched it a few months ago.
The advertisement was broadcast for "Mother's Day" and it was not for promoting
any product or service. The ministry of child and mother care of the health
department was the sponsor of this advert, and I saw it 3-4 days before last Mother's Day.
This advert was a very creative one, and it was not like most other ads that publicise
or advertise their products or boast about their service. Rather it was dedicated to
the mothers, and it reminded us of a fact that we all know. It outlined that the
toughest job in the world is the job of a mother. Mothers do everything humanly
possible to offer the best to their infants. They sacrifice their own happiness and time
to properly take care of the kids. What they do is not comparable to anything or
anyone in the world. Without their love, our survival would have been impossible.
I saw this advert in the (...say a TV channel name..) channel. This was a creative ad
that effectively delivered the message it intended to, which was to remind us of our
mother's importance and love in our life. It showed some successful people, and
before that, it showed how mothers were taking care and inspiring their kids to do
good in life. It was an advertisement dedicated to all mothers in the world. 14 15
Describe your favorite movie/film. You should say: ● what it is ● when you watched it ● what it is about
● and explain why this is your favorite movie.
I love to enjoy movies but my taste is a bit different. I love to watch comedy movies
only. They attract me in a different way. I have watched a good number of comedy
movies but The Pink Panther (2006) appeared the best one to me. Thank you for describing the matter here.
Pink Panther is a series of movies made a long time ago. So, the series has gained
a huge popularity. The protagonist of the movie solves mysterious cases alone which
is not possible for the other police officials to crack. So, the key character is always
in trouble with the police chief.
I watched the movie in the evening. In fact, I had nothing to do at that time. Besides,
nobody was at home. When everybody is at home, it is comfortable to spend time
with them. But when alone, it is really hard to pass the moments.
The Pink Panther (2006) is about the solving of a murder. This is the 10th installment
of the movie series. The earlier series was also wonderful and made some business.
But this one is the best among them. This is my personal opinion. The movie was
about solving the murder and at the same time to rescue the Pink Panther diamond.
This is my favorite movie for several reasons. First of all, it shows some comical
event that will make you laugh. The activities of the inspector Jacques Clouseau will
make anyone laugh during the movie time. He did some foolish activities. He is
always aware of everything but cannot apply his knowledge at the right moment. He
tries to protect everyone but fails to do so for his foolishness. He wants to favor the
distressed but in reality, he makes the situation worse for them. All such events are 16
highly comical and will make the audiences laugh. But finally, he wins the race with
his wit and intelligence. Considering the matters, I am in love with this movie. 17
Describe a decision that you had to consider for a long time to make You should say: ● What the decision was ● When you made the decision
● Whom you made the decision with
● And explain why you had to consider for a long time to make
One major decision that I’ve taken in my life was to study Law at University. This
meant moving to a new town where the university was located and spending three
years studying a subject that was completely new to me.
There were several other choices that I could have taken at the time. For a while I
found it hard to make up my mind. I considered taking a degree in English, as this
was always my favorite subject at school and I always got A grades in English
exams. Another option open to me was to apply for a degree course in French. At
one point I even considered trying to get into university to study Physics, as this was another subject I loved.
Eventually, the decision I reached was to take a law degree, the reason being that I
thought this would open more doors to me in the future. I had no wish to be a
lawyer, but I thought that the breadth of knowledge I would gain would set me in
good stead as a journalist, which is what I wanted to be at the time. I was also
interested in understanding more about how our legal system works.
As to whether or not this was a good decision, I think it was definitely the right choice
for me. I found studying law fascinating, and then went on to work as a journalist and
researcher for some years. I also had a sideline in teaching legal English to lawyers,
and eventually found that I much preferred teaching English to journalism. Gradually
I took on more teaching work until I eventually dropped journalism altogether. So that
original decision to study law caused a chain of events that took me to where I am 18 now. 19
