In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve
anything if they try hard enough.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?
Benefits: boost their self-confidence and believe themselves
Motivates children to work hard and try hard to acomplish high targets
Set unrealistic aims => increase anxious and stress levels
=> harms their mental health.
It is true that in some cultures, children are frequently taught that
they can acomplish = achieve = obtain anything through
perserverance and hard work. Several benefits and drawbacks
regarding this message will be analyzed in this essay.
One main advantage of fostering the belief that children can
attain anything with hard work is boosting their self-confidence.
Children who believe in themselves can take on more challenges
and push through obstacles. This belief empower them to rely on
themselves, do their best and avoid blaming others for their
failures. Children raised in this way can view challenges in life as
opportunities for learning and developing and, therefore, will be
more confident. Another benefit of believing in their potential is
that it motivates children to set more ambitious goals. When they
realize that their success depends on themselves and their hard
work, they will not limit themselves in ordinary aims. They could
set high goals and try to achieve them. This mindset can act as
motivation to help children grow and go further in the long run.
Nevetheless, if children constantly hear that achieving anything is
possible, they may set unrealistic expectations and goals, and
then face immense stress to excel in every aspect of life. This
could lead to an increase in stress and anxiety levels. As a result,
fear of failure and needing to prove themselves can harm their mental health.
In conclusion, encouraging children to believe in themselves and
their hard work contributes to increase their self-confidence and
motivates them to pursue high goals and tries their best to
achieve them. However, overemphasizing this belief may
accidentially generate pressure and burdens, which threatens their mental health.
