DIRECT VS INDERECT SPEECH
1. DIRECT SPEECH ( QUOTED SPEECH)
*Denition: Direct speech is when we report someone’s exact word.
We use quotoation marks (“..”) to show the exact words that
were spoken.
*Structure: Subject + say/said + “exact words”
2. INDERECT SPEECH ( REPORTED SPEECH )
*Denition: Inderect speech is when we report what someone said without
using their exact words – we don’t use quotation marks.
*Structure
a. Statements
S + said/told + (that) + S + V
b. Yes/No question
S + asked + if/whether + S + V
c. Wh- Question
S + asked/ wanted to know + Wh- word + S + V
d. Changes in verbs
Imperative --> innitive
Simple present --> simple past
Present progressive --> past progressive
Simple past --> past perfect
Present perfect --> past perfect
e. Verbs that don’t changes
- The reporting verb is in the present tense
- The stetement is a fact or general truth.
f. Modals change
Can --> could
May --> might
Must --> had to
Shall --> should
Will --> would
g. Other changes
This --> that and these --> those
Here --> there
Now --> then
Ago --> before/ previously
Yesterday --> the day before/ the previous day
Today --> that day
Tomorrow --> the next day/ the following day.
