DIRECT VS INDERECT SPEECH
- DIRECT SPEECH ( QUOTED SPEECH)
*Definition: Direct speech is when we report someone’s exact word.
We use quotoation marks (“..”) to show the exact words that were spoken.
*Structure: Subject + say/said + “exact words”
2. INDERECT SPEECH ( REPORTED SPEECH )
*Definition: Inderect speech is when we report what someone said without using their exact words – we don’t use quotation marks.
*Structure
a. Statements
S + said/told + (that) + S + V
b. Yes/No question
S + asked + if/whether + S + V
c. Wh- Question
S + asked/ wanted to know + Wh- word + S + V
d. Changes in verbs
- Imperative --> infinitive
- Simple present --> simple past
- Present progressive --> past progressive
- Simple past --> past perfect
- Present perfect --> past perfect
e. Verbs that don’t changes
- The reporting verb is in the present tense
- The stetement is a fact or general truth.
f. Modals change
- Can --> could
- May --> might
- Must --> had to
- Shall --> should
- Will --> would
g. Other changes
- This --> that and these --> those
- Here --> there
- Now --> then
- Ago --> before/ previously
- Yesterday --> the day before/ the previous day
- Today --> that day
- Tomorrow --> the next day/ the following day.
