I. Why choose Halong Bay?
Situated in the heart of Southeast Asia, Halong Bay is a destination that
combines breathtaking natural beauty with deep-rooted cultural significance,
making it a must-visit location for travelers seeking a blend of wonder and
heritage. Halong Bay is a mesmerizing destination renowned for its emerald
waters adorned with thousands of limestone karsts, steeped in cultural
significance with a name meaning "Descending Dragon," and honored as a
UNESCO World Heritage Site for its ecological importance. It offers endless
exploration opportunities, from hidden caves to kayaking and traditional junk
boat experiences, all while promoting sustainable tourism to preserve its
natural beauty and cultural heritage for generations to come. It's the perfect
blend of natural wonder and cultural significance, making it a true gem of
Southeast Asia.
II. Origins and History
2.1 Origins of Halong Bay
Halong Bay was created by a geological process that lasted millions of years.
This process began about 500 million years ago when seismic activity caused
rocks in the Tonkin Sea to rise from the seabed.
Halong Bay has a special limestone system with thousands of islands and
rugged alluvial grounds, formed over millions of years by the erosion of
seawater and other natural factors. Factors such as salinity, wind, and waves
have acted on limestone rocks, resulting in their unique and complex shapes.
According to documents on the history of Halong Bay, in 1883, the French
colonialists occupied Quang Ninh province of Vietnam. At that time, French
geologists and archaeologists began to realize the breathtaking grandeur of
Halong Bay. There are many small islands with French names, such as Surprise
Cave - "la Grotte des Surprise". This site was discovered by the French in 1901
and given this name in 1938.
Local people have used the name Ha Long for a long time, but it was not until
the end of the 19th century that the official name of the sea area "Ha Long ''
first appeared on the map of the French. The French version of "Hai Phong
News'' published an article about a mysterious dragon-like creature discovered
three times in Halong Bay in 1898, 1900, and 1902 by the captain and crew of
the Avance, Legderin.
The Origin of the Name
Legend has it that from the beginning of the world, the ancient
Vietnamese country always had to fight against foreign invaders
massively attacking from the sea. Therefore, the Jade Emperor sent the

Mother Dragon and her cubs down to earth to help the Vietnamese keep
their land in peace.
Thanks to the help of the Divine Dragon, the Vietnamese people
escaped the threat of foreign invasion. After helping, the Dragon was
about to fly to the sky, suddenly seeing the peaceful scenery here, green
trees, rich products, and industrious people. The mother dragon felt
attached and did not want to leave, so she and her cubs decided to take
the place where the battle took place as a shelter. Since then, the herd of
Dragons has forever protected the people of Vietnam.
The place where the Mother Dragon landed today is Halong Bay. Where
the baby dragons set foot is Bai Tu Long Bay. The place where the
dragon's tail flutters in the white water is Bach Long Vi, today's Tra Co
peninsula with its fine sand stretching for tens of kilometers. The name
Ha Long originates from that legend: Ha Long - where the Dragon
landed.
2.2 The Evolution of history Halong Bay
The process of forming Halong Bay is a process that took place millions of
years and continues to this day. The rocky islands and unique landscape of the
bay have attracted the attention of tourists from all over the world and become
one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vietnam.
The Soi Nhu civilization (18,000 – 7000 BC)
The Soi Nhu culture, dating from 18,000 to 7,000 years ago, is the
earliest recorded culture in Halong Bay. Archaeological records show
that the Soi Nhu culture is responsible for the earliest human remains
discovered in the Halong Bay area.
Soi Nhu civilization originates from the name of Soi Nhu archaeological
site in Bai Tu Long Bay, a prehistoric human culture discovered in 1964
and excavated in 1967 by archaeologists. Soi Nhu culture can be
compared with Hoa Binh and Bac Son cultures and is possibly
contemporaneous with Nguom culture in Thai Nguyen, 25,000 years
ago. Their way of life includes foraging, harvesting, and exploiting
freshwater mollusks using unstable stone tools, simple production
techniques involving single-sided chisels, cutting methods and minimal
modification.
The Cai Beo civilization (7000 – 5000 BC)
The Cai Beo site in the Cat Hai district is associated with the Cai Beo
culture, which flourished during the period from 7500 to 5000 BC.
French archaeologist M. Colani discovered this site in 1938 and named
it the site of the Bay of Fishing Village.

Archaeologists have discovered hundreds of chisels, complete and
partial stone grinding tools, such as axes, scrapers, grinders, and more,
as they continue their journey to learn more about the site and this
ancient coastal settlement. Pointed, millet, shoulder ax, tetrahedral ax,
ax with a discontinuity. In addition, about 15,000 pieces of untreated
pottery, hand-shaped and turntable, have been discovered, along with
many bones and molars of animals.
Cai Beo was the residence of a fisherman population in an ancient
fishing village with the largest scale in our country thousands of years
ago. Cai Beo is nestled in the middle of a limestone valley running along
the coast, showing that the Ancient Vietnamese were very subtle in
choosing a location to live, which was both convenient for marine
exploitation and limited natural disasters thanks to the limestone
mountains. windbreak, wavebreak.
The Halong Civilization (3000 – 1500 BC)
Ha Long existed 4,500 - 3,000 years ago and is widely distributed in
coastal areas and island systems in two provinces of Hai Phong and
Quang Ninh.
The most prominent aspect of the Ha Long civilization is the technique
of making axes and delivering bladed tools. Making pottery from a
combination of mollusk shells reflects the marine nature of this culture.
Patterns on ancient Vietnamese ceramics show that in this period they
knew how to plant thread, weave yarn, weave nets, and cast fishing nets.
Prehistoric people were also able to create decorations from rocks, fish
bones, and mollusk shells to interact with the non-Halong inhabitants.
The Feudal Era
According to the history of Halong Bay, this land is also called by many
different names. The Northern colonial period of Vietnam, this region is
called Luc Chau and Luc Hai. During the Ly, Tran, and Le dynasties,
the sea estuaries were named Hoa Phong, Hai Dong, An Bang, Van
Don, Ngoc Son, and Luc Thuy. The name Ha Long (meaning where the
dragon lands) has recently appeared in several 19th-century French
bibliographies and maritime maps.
The "Hai Phong News'' at that time reported on the appearance of
dragon-like creatures in today's Halong Bay area with the headline
"Dragon Appears in Halong Bay'' when the French lieutenant named
Legderin and the captain of the Avalanche and his crew encountered two
giant sea dragons. snake three times. With the appearance of a strange
but real animal like a dragon, it became the idea of the reason the French

diverse and rich, concentrating terrestrial, aquatic, lower and higher
species living in 10 marine and forest ecosystems. Currently, there are
nearly 3000 species of flora and fauna.
Diversity of genetic resources: The diversity of genetic resources has
made Halong Bay different from other regions in the area. There are 102
species rare and specious at global or regional level; 17 species of plants
are endemic to Halong Bay.
3.5. Geological and morphologic
With the largest number of islands, accounting for 2/3 of total islands in
Vietnam, Halong Bay has a long geological history of around 500 million
years, including various formations of terrestrial deposits and carbonate
sediment. This is historical evidence recording great events in the regional
geological process.
Halong Bay is the best example of marine-invaded karst landscape and one of
the most important areas of fengcong and fenglin karst in the world. This is an
outstanding universal value, affirming its position of a Natural World Heritage
- and a Natural World Wonder.

V - Cultural and Economic Impacts
5.1. Cultural and Economic Impacts: Halong Bay, located in northern Vietnam, has
significant cultural and economic impacts.
5.1.1. Cultural Impacts
Halong Bay has always played an important role in Vietnamese history and is
highly valued as a culturally significant area for the Vietnamese people. Halong
Bay’'s 1600 inhabitants live primarily in four floating fishing villages named:
Ba Hung, Vung Vieng, Cua Van and Cong Tau. Built originally in the early
19th century to serve as a place for fishermen to sell their daily catch, these
floating villages soon became a place to live for many of the fishermen and
their families. Today, the villagers mainly make a living from the booming
tourism that thrives in Halong Bay, but the villages are still a serene and unique
place to visit.
Throughout the 12th century, the Van Don port in Halong was the busiest port
in the North of Vietnam. Foreign traders from faraway lands were welcomed to
trade delicacies from their respective countries. The port attracted many

international merchants because the rocky islands separated the bay into
lagoons and canals, which made for the easy and safe mooring of their ships.
Halong’s status as a hub for sea trade made it the gateway for foreign spices
and silks to enter Vietnam. No longer a major seaport, in modern Halong Bay
the main business is to be found in the tourism industry.
Bai Tho Mountain is one of the highest mountains in Halong City, Quang
Ninh. In the 15th century a poem, written by the great Emperor, Le Thanh
Tong, was etched into a cliff on the magnificent Bai Tho Mountain. In English
“Bai Tho” roughly translates to “The Mountain of the Poem”. Bai Tho
Mountain offers spectacular views and it takes approximately 1.5 hours to get
to the top.
On the western side of Halong Bay, you can find Bai Chay. Currently, a
popular beach resort in the Quang Ninh province, historically Bai Chay has
quite a different story. It was here that the Tran Dynasty enjoyed a resounding
victory against Mongol aggression by setting fire to their prized fleet. Another
thundering triumph was achieved in the ancient Dau Go Cave when Grand
Prince Tran Hung Dao enjoyed a tremendous victory on the Bach Dang River.
Vietnam’s history is rich with military confrontation and yet Halong Bay has
stood strong throughout the ages. It is perhaps this military past that has helped
the Vietnamese people value resilient natural treasures such as Halong Bay.
5.1.2. Economic Impacts:
Positive Impacts:
An international research project found increasing local economic
benefits from direct and indirect employment in the tourism industry as
well as from the tourist spend in the local economy on food, drink,
accommodation, local transport and souvenirs.
The construction of one of the world’s largest cable car installations,
new luxury hotels and beach developments in the Bai Chay tourist zone
will transform tourism and offer more business opportunities.
The huge growth in tourism to Halong Bay has created significant
employment and opportunities for local people and shown that
economic linkages to the local economy could be strengthened further to
capture more benefits locally from tourism, especially for small and
medium sized businesses.
Negative Impacts:
To cater to the large number of tourists, the water environment in
Halong Bay is under strain from the rising influx of industrial,
agricultural, and domestic waste. At present, water sample
measurements in Halong Bay show signs of pollution by oil and
coliform. Other pollutants, namely heavy metals, chlorinated pesticides
9

10/15
and organic matter, are also above the limits set by the state for water
management.
The water in Halong Bay has been affected predominantly by industrial
and domestic waste. This arises as the tourism activity in Halong Bay
incites the demand for goods and services to feed the industry. Hence,
discharge of heavy metals and large amounts of suspended solids into
the bay is common, negatively impacting water quality. Furthermore,
large amounts of trash have been discarded into the waters. The plastics
are not biodegradable, thus posing an environmental issue for the
organisms residing there.
5.2. Economic Development and Cultural Preservation:
5.2.1. Economic Development:
The tourism sector drives economic growth around the world. It is the largest
employer and generator of foreign exchange, especially vital for the economic
growth of developing countries that strive to attract visitors from all around the
world to explore their cultural and natural treasures.
Tourism is considered a crucial factor for local development due to its
consumption of a varied array of goods and services, with linkages to virtually
every industry in the economy.
In specific regions like Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and coastal
Least Developed Countries (LDCs), maritime or ocean-related tourism, as well
as coastal tourism, are vital sectors of the economy.
5.2.2. Cultural Preservation
Tourism brings together people from different backgrounds, cultures, and
traditions. Tourists share their experiences and memories about places they
visited and people they met, which helps promote peace and tolerance.
The importance of tourism lies not only in the substantial economic benefit it
brings but also in the opportunity for cultural exchange that it offers.
National Heritage Areas are a grassroots, community-driven approach to
heritage conservation.
The American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association, Inc. (AIANTA)
serves as the voice and resource for tribes and tribal organizations engaged in
cultural tourism.
VI. Fascinating Figures
For the tourism service industry in Vietnam, Halong is always one of the prides
of the whole country when it is noticed by international friends and is one of
the seven wonders of the world recognized by UNESCO. Therefore, the
number of tourists coming to Halong is always an admirable number compared
to other tourist destinations in Vietnam.

I. Why choose Halong Bay?
● Situated in the heart of Southeast Asia, Halong Bay is a destination that
combines breathtaking natural beauty with deep-rooted cultural significance,
making it a must-visit location for travelers seeking a blend of wonder and
It's the perfect
blend of natural wonder and cultural significance, making it a true gem of Southeast Asia. II. Origins and History 2.1 Origins of Halong Bay
● Halong Bay was created by a geological process that lasted millions of years.
This process began about 500 million years ago when seismic activity caused
rocks in the Tonkin Sea to rise from the seabed.
● Halong Bay has a special limestone system with thousands of islands and
rugged alluvial grounds, formed over millions of years by the erosion of
seawater and other natural factors. Factors such as salinity, wind, and waves
have acted on limestone rocks, resulting in their unique and complex shapes.
● According to documents on the history of Halong Bay, in 1883, the French
colonialists occupied Quang Ninh province of Vietnam. At that time, French
geologists and archaeologists began to realize the breathtaking grandeur of
Halong Bay. There are many small islands with French names, such as Surprise
Cave - "la Grotte des Surprise". This site was discovered by the French in 1901 and given this name in 1938.
● Local people have used the name Ha Long for a long time, but it was not until
the end of the 19th century that the official name of the sea area "Ha Long ''
first appeared on the map of the French. The French version of "Hai Phong
News'' published an article about a mysterious dragon-like creature discovered
three times in Halong Bay in 1898, 1900, and 1902 by the captain and crew of the Avance, Legderin.
The Origin of the Name
➢ Legend has it that from the beginning of the world, the ancient
Vietnamese country always had to fight against foreign invaders
massively attacking from the sea. Therefore, the Jade Emperor sent the 2 about:blank 3/15 11:43 18/1/25
Group 2 - A famous tourist attraction
Mother Dragon and her cubs down to earth to help the Vietnamese keep their land in peace.
➢ Thanks to the help of the Divine Dragon, the Vietnamese people
escaped the threat of foreign invasion.
➢ The place where the Mother Dragon landed today is Halong Bay. Where
the baby dragons set foot is Bai Tu Long Bay. The place where the
dragon's tail flutters in the white water is Bach Long Vi, today's Tra Co
peninsula with its fine sand stretching for tens of kilometers. The name
Ha Long originates from that legend: Ha Long - where the Dragon landed.
2.2 The Evolution of history Halong Bay
● The process of forming Halong Bay is a process that took place millions of
years and continues to this day. The rocky islands and unique landscape of the
bay have attracted the attention of tourists from all over the world and become
one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vietnam.
The Soi Nhu civilization (18,000 – 7000 BC)
➢ The Soi Nhu culture, dating from 18,000 to 7,000 years ago, is the
earliest recorded culture in Halong Bay. Archaeological records show
that the Soi Nhu culture is responsible for the earliest human remains
discovered in the Halong Bay area.
➢ Soi Nhu civilization originates from the name of Soi Nhu archaeological
site in Bai Tu Long Bay, a prehistoric human culture discovered in 1964
and excavated in 1967 by archaeologists. Soi Nhu culture can be
compared with Hoa Binh and Bac Son cultures and is possibly
contemporaneous with Nguom culture in Thai Nguyen, 25,000 years
ago. Their way of life includes foraging, harvesting, and exploiting
freshwater mollusks using unstable stone tools, simple production
techniques involving single-sided chisels, cutting methods and minimal modification.
● The Cai Beo civilization (7000 – 5000 BC)
➢ The Cai Beo site in the Cat Hai district is associated with the Cai Beo
culture, which flourished during the period from 7500 to 5000 BC.
French archaeologist M. Colani discovered this site in 1938 and named
it the site of the Bay of Fishing Village. 3 about:blank 4/15 11:43 18/1/25
Group 2 - A famous tourist attraction
➢ Archaeologists have discovered hundreds of chisels, complete and
partial stone grinding tools, such as axes, scrapers, grinders, and more,
as they continue their journey to learn more about the site and this
ancient coastal settlement. Pointed, millet, shoulder ax, tetrahedral ax,
ax with a discontinuity. In addition, about 15,000 pieces of untreated
pottery, hand-shaped and turntable, have been discovered, along with
many bones and molars of animals.
➢ Cai Beo was the residence of a fisherman population in an ancient
fishing village with the largest scale in our country thousands of years
● The Halong Civilization (3000 – 1500 BC)
➢ Ha Long existed 4,500 - 3,000 years ago and is widely distributed in
coastal areas and island systems in two provinces of Hai Phong and Quang Ninh.
➢ The most prominent aspect of the Ha Long civilization is the technique
of making axes and delivering bladed tools.
● The Feudal Era
➢ According to the history of Halong Bay, this land is also called by many
different names.
➢ The "Hai Phong News'' at that time reported on the appearance of
dragon-like creatures in today's Halong Bay area with the headline
"Dragon Appears in Halong Bay'' when the French lieutenant named
Legderin and the captain of the Avalanche and his crew encountered two
giant sea dragons. snake three times. With the appearance of a strange
but real animal like a dragon, it became the idea of the reason the French 4 about:blank 5/15 11:43 18/1/25

V - Cultural and Economic Impacts
5.1. Cultural and Economic Impacts: Halong Bay, located in northern Vietnam, has
significant cultural and economic impacts. 5.1.1. Cultural Impacts
● Halong Bay has always played an important role in Vietnamese history and is
highly valued as a culturally significant area for the Vietnamese people.
Today, the villagers mainly make a living from the booming
tourism that thrives in Halong Bay, but the villages are still a serene and unique place to visit.
● Throughout the 12th century, the Van Don port in Halong was the busiest port
in the North of Vietnam. Foreign traders from faraway lands were welcomed to
trade delicacies from their respective countries. The port attracted many 8 about:blank 9/15 11:43 18/1/25

international merchants because the rocky islands separated the bay into
lagoons and canals, which made for the easy and safe mooring of their ships.
Halong’s status as a hub for sea trade made it the gateway for foreign spices
and silks to enter Vietnam. No longer a major seaport, in modern Halong Bay
the main business is to be found in the tourism industry.
● Bai Tho Mountain is one of the highest mountains in Halong City, Quang
Ninh. In the 15th century a poem, written by the great Emperor, Le Thanh
Tong, was etched into a cliff on the magnificent Bai Tho Mountain. In English
“Bai Tho” roughly translates to “The Mountain of the Poem”. Bai Tho
Mountain offers spectacular views and it takes approximately 1.5 hours to get to the top.
● On the western side of Halong Bay, you can find Bai Chay.
● Vietnam’s history is rich with military confrontation and yet Halong Bay has
stood strong throughout the ages. It is perhaps this military past that has helped
the Vietnamese people value resilient natural treasures such as Halong Bay.
5.1.2. Economic Impacts: ● Positive Impacts:
➢ An international research project found increasing local economic
benefits from direct and indirect employment in the tourism industry as
well as from the tourist spend in the local economy on food, drink,
accommodation, local transport and souvenirs.
➢ The construction of one of the world’s largest cable car installations,
new luxury hotels and beach developments in the Bai Chay tourist zone
will transform tourism and offer more business opportunities.
➢ The huge growth in tourism to Halong Bay has created significant
employment and opportunities for local people and shown that
economic linkages to the local economy could be strengthened further to
capture more benefits locally from tourism, especially for small and medium sized businesses. ● Negative Impacts:
➢ To cater to the large number of tourists, the water environment in
Halong Bay is under strain from the rising influx of industrial,
agricultural, and domestic waste. At present, water sample
measurements in Halong Bay show signs of pollution by oil and
coliform. Other pollutants, namely heavy metals, chlorinated pesticides 9 about:blank 10/15 11:43 18/1/25
Group 2 - A famous tourist attraction
and organic matter, are also above the limits set by the state for water management.
➢ The water in Halong Bay has been affected predominantly by industrial
and domestic waste.
The plastics
are not biodegradable, thus posing an environmental issue for the organisms residing there.
5.2. Economic Development and Cultural Preservation:
5.2.1. Economic Development:
● The tourism sector drives economic growth around the world. It is the largest
employer and generator of foreign exchange, especially vital for the economic
growth of developing countries that strive to attract visitors from all around the
world to explore their cultural and natural treasures.
● Tourism is considered a crucial factor for local development due to its
consumption of a varied array of goods and services, with linkages to virtually every industry in the economy.
● In specific regions like Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and coastal
Least Developed Countries (LDCs), maritime or ocean-related tourism, as well
as coastal tourism, are vital sectors of the economy.
5.2.2. Cultural Preservation
● Tourism brings together people from different backgrounds, cultures, and
traditions. Tourists share their experiences and memories about places they
visited and people they met, which helps promote peace and tolerance.
● The importance of tourism lies not only in the substantial economic benefit it
brings but also in the opportunity for cultural exchange that it offers.
● National Heritage Areas are a grassroots, community-driven approach to heritage conservation.
● The American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association, Inc. (AIANTA)
serves as the voice and resource for tribes and tribal organizations engaged in cultural tourism. VI. Fascinating Figures
