The lecturer talks about the benefits and the possible risks of Genetically modified food
which is food either plants or animals. It has 3 main benefits. First of all, genetically
modified plants need fewer pesticides. There is a variety of corn that can kill insects
while being absolutely harmless to people. Secondly, genetically modified plants may
grow better than normal plants. The genetically modified strawberry is an example of this
sort of plant, as it can be grown in the fall and spring whereas conventional strawberries
perish in the winter. Finally, a third benefit is that many genetically modified plants stay
fresh longer after they are harvested. Tomatoes may stay fresh for two months after
harvest thanks to genetic engineering, giving consumers more time to travel and
consume. However, GM food has 3 possible risks. One risk is that the genetically
modified plants may start to dominate the other wild plants in the environment.
Genetically modified tomatoes are much stronger than normal plants so they will
dominate the environment and that has a negative impact on the ecosystem. Another risk
is that genetically modified plants hurt wild animals and insects in the environment.
Butterflies are beneficial insects, yet they, like other insects, are eliminated by GM
maize. The most important risk is that genetically modified food may be harmful to the
people who consume the food. Animal genes

have been put into plants by scientists. They have taken the genes of cold water fish and
transplanted them into strawberries so that the strawberries stay fresher longer and this
can be harmful to human health. To summarize, GM food has two sides. They require
minimal pesticides, grow quickly, and are easy to store, but they also have the potential
to dominate the ecosystem, bringing harm to both wild creatures and people. pg. 2
