What makes a good advertising commercial?
Advertising is a necessary part of the global business
world today. If you do not advertise, how are your
potential customers going to know what you are
selling? Choosing the most suitable commercial for
your target market is vital. The growth in the use of
smart phones and other digital devices means that
commercials can be seen everywhere and bad ones
are not easily forgotten as they are watched
repeatedly on the internet.
People say that there is no such thing as bad
publicity but, if a company has made a big mistake
with their commercial, then the negative points will be
reinforced by people constantly sharing it on social
media and the brand image will suffer. Several
famous brand TV commercials have had to be
withdrawn because they have upset audiences. For
example, a well-known fast food chain designed a
commercial aimed at children but accidentally used a
frightening animated character which scared many
young children.
Good commercials will raise brand awareness by
getting people to talk about it and therefore spread
the message about the product or service. The best
ones will be shared by millions of people. For me the
best commercials are the ones which make me
laugh. But using comedy to sell a product doesnt
work for everyone: what some find funny may annoy
others.
Targeting the right market today is more important
than ever. These days advertisers have access to
massive amounts of digital media to help them reach
their target market. Consequently, they have to be
even more careful about cultural and ethical issues.
Furthermore, advertising has to follow the law of the
country in which it is being shown, so there may also
be problems trying to use one advertisement
globally.
In conclusion, I think that as long as a commercial
leaves a positive long-lasting impression, it has
achieved its purpose.

Dear Mr Nkomo,
Thank you for your letter. I am sorry to hear about
your staffing issues and I apologise for the lack of
communication regarding a training strategy.
However, we had some problems finding a suitable
training partner.
I am pleased to inform you that we have now signed
a contract with Gorald Training. They offer a
comprehensive training plan for management staff,
who will have to attend two courses every year. The
first courses will take place in three months time.
The courses for junior management staff take place
locally or in-house and include subjects such as time
management, active listening and delegating. There
are also special courses for senior management and
these are held in various locations around the world
and include subjects such as leadership, personal
effectiveness and giving and receiving feedback.
Staff must use Gorald Training, therefore we cannot
allow you to organise your own training courses, but
we can assure that you that both you and your staff
will be able to participate in at least two professional
development courses per year.
We hope that this letter clarifies the matter and
answers your questions. Please do not hesitate to
contact me if you have any further queries.

Dear Ms Pfennig,
I had a meeting with the Sales Director this morning
and we discussed the problems we are facing.
Firstly, stock levels are very low because of the fire
at our factory last week. As a result, we were unable
to supply customers on time. Consequently, they are
very unhappy as they have to wait for their orders.
Secondly, the GH4 product is faulty due to a design
error. As a result of this we have recalled all faulty
products.

Staff survey
A staff survey has been conducted to find out how
staff feel about working for the company. Employees
were asked how satisfied they were with the working
environment, their line manager, their salary, the
amount of paid holiday and to add any other
comments.
Salary and working environment
The majority of staff are satisfied with their salaries
and only 18% said they were dissatisfied. There were
no extra comments about salary. Only a third of staff
were satisfied with their working environment.
Several staff members made comments saying that
the factory was old and dusty and therefore an
unhealthy place to work in.
Paid holiday and line managers
Most of the staff feel that they do not get enough paid
holiday and would like more. Some commented that
it would be good if they could have more holiday if
they have worked here for more than five years.
More than half of the staff said they were satisfied
with their line manager, although many employees
did not offer any opinion on this. There were no
significant comments about line managers.
Working hours and other comments
Several people thought that the working hours were
too long and that they would like to have more tea or
coffee breaks. However, we give them what is
required by law. Some employees felt they needed
more training and the chance to do different jobs.
And finally, there were many comments about the
company providing transport to and from the factory
© 2018 Pearson PHOTOCOPIABLE 5

as some employees are finding it very difficult to get
to work on time using public transport.
Recommendations
I would recommend that we look at improving the
working conditions in the factory to ensure that we
provide a healthy working environment for our staff.
Regarding more paid holiday for staff working here
for five years or more, I think we should look into this
in order to remain competitive. Our working hours
comply with the law so we must investigate further
why staff feel they are not getting long enough
breaks. Recently some staff have been late for work
and due to the reduction of public transport services
over the last year. Therefore, I think we should
organise staff transport. Finally, it would be good for
both employees and the company if we provided
more training for staff.

Problems with FGTY system
Dear Mr Krulic,

stock has been directed to the wrong locations four
times by your system. As Im sure you can

Dear Jane,
It has become obvious that staff need to speak some
Chinese and Spanish because of our cross-cultural
projects. After researching, I suggest three options.
Firstly, online courses seem to be the cheapest way
of learning. Secondly someone could come into our
company to teach staff, and finally people could
attend full immersion courses in countries where the
languages are spoken.
I recommend that we use online courses to keep

Beware that it can cause conflict if you are

Working with previous colleagues can be

The first thing the new manager needs to do is
create an atmosphere where information exchange

Sadly, its easy for some new managers to

Avoiding first-time manager mistakes
Beware that it can cause conflict if you are
promoted within a team or department. •
Working with previous col eagues can be
difficult so treat everyone in the same way so that
former colleagues can’t accuse you of favouritism –
create an environment of trust. •
The first thing the new manager needs to do is
create an atmosphere where information exchange
can take place freely and put some ground rules in
place. Involve everyone in the process. •
Sadly, it’s easy for some new managers to
fol ow examples of bad management, e.g. shouting
out orders and doing nothing else.
