WILL I BE DOING? Hi
Nguyen,
Many of my friends have started talking about their future career though we still have three more
years to go before we finish our school education. Some want to have a nine-to-five job like a bank
clerk, some want to be something more creative like a designer, and my friend Dan even dreams of
travelling into space.
For me, my plan for the future will take far more than three years to accomplish. After getting a
university degree, I will fulfil my long dream: joining the Peace Corps, which is a volunteer
programme run by the United States of America. This programme allows young people to work
abroad for two years with schools, non-profit organisations, and charities… in areas like education
and agriculture.
One aim of the programme is to help us to understand the cultures of other countries, and to help
people outside the USA to understand us. The work can be difficult, but I believe it has its rewards.
I can see myself travelling in a faraway land, finding ways to fit into a community that is very
different from my own, and working together with the local people for a better future. I might even
come to Viet Nam and visit you. Who knows?
All the best for now.
Yours, Mark.

C. Read the letter from Duong to Jenny, and choose the best answer for each of the questions
Dear Jenny,
It's great to learn that you have been granted a scholarship to study at Queens' College, a
prestigious part of Cambridge University, and that you will be able to pursue your dream of
becoming a biologist. Congrats!
I have been accepted to the maths class at Ha Noi High School - one of the best schools in Ha Noi.
I love maths and I hope to become a mathematician one day. I know the route ahead is not smooth
because I will have to take courses in maths, physics, and even in computing. My dad said I need
not only a bachelor's degree, but ideally a doctoral one if I want to get a good job. I would love to
work at the Institute of Mathematics like my dad because, due to his work at the institute, he has
also been invited to teach in several universities in France. Alternatively, I can choose applied
mathematics and work in finance for an international company. Moreover, my mother said I also
need soft skills like teamwork skills, interpersonal skills, and communication skills to do either of
those jobs. Luckily, my new school provides many extracurricular classes which I can take part in
to relax and to pick up those skills.
Anyway, there is plenty of time for me to make detailed plans. I've decided to take a break for a
while.
Wish you were here to go with me to Da Nang.

ROBOT TEACHERS
If you think of the jobs that robots could never do, you probably put doctors and teachers at the top
of the list. However, in some cases robots already perform better than doctors at diagnosing illness.
Also, some patients might feel more comfortable sharing personal information with a machine than
with a person. Could there be a place for robots in education after all?
Trang 7
British education expert Anthony Seldon thinks so. He predicts by 2027 robots will do the main job
of transferring information and teachers will be like assistants. Intelligent robots will read students’
faces, movements and maybe even brain signals. Then they will adapt the information to each
student. It’s not a popular opinion and it’s unlikely robots will ever have empathy and the ability to
really connect with humans like another human can.
Teachers all over the world are leaving because it is a difficult job and they feel overworked.
Perhaps the question is not ‘Will robots replace teachers?’ but ‘How can robots help teachers?’
Office workers can use software to do things like organise and answer emails, arrange meetings
and update calendars. Teachers waste a lot of time doing non-teaching work, including more than
11 hours a week marking homework. If robots could cut the time teachers spend marking
homework and writing reports, teachers would have more time and energy for the parts of the job
humans do best.
1. Robots are always better at diagnosing illness than doctors.
2. Education experts agree robots will fully replace teachers by 2027.
3. Anthony Seldon thinks teachers in the future will help robots in class.
4. Robot teachers will be able to read the brains and facial expressions of students and change the
information so that it fits each student.
5. One advantage of robot teachers is that they could empathise with students.
E. Read the text carefully, then choose the correct answer for each of the questions
We need to eat to meet our nutritional needs, but people often make their food choices for reasons
other than nutrition. The availability of foods and their cost, the taste and appearance of foods,
personal food likes and dislikes, convenience, religious and cultural practices and traditions, health
and medical conditions, etc. are reasons why people eat the foods that they eat.
The foods in people’s diets around the world are very different from each other, but all good diets
must be composed of a variety of different foods that provide all of the food energy and other
nutrients in the amounts needed. For most people, a good meal will be based on a starchy food,
sometimes referred to as a “staple” food, as it forms the basis or main portion of the meal, and a
variety of other foods (side dishes) that provide the additional protein, vitamins and minerals
needed for a good, healthy diet.
Staple foods are usually starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, couscous, maize (corn),
potatoes, and foods made from wheat, rice, rye, barley or oats. The other foods eaten with the meal
should include generous amounts of vegetables and fruits; good amounts of legumes; smaller
amounts of meat, poultry, eggs or fish and milk and milk products, such as cheese and yoghurt.
The greater the variety of side dishes served with the staple food, the greater the chance that all the
needed nutrients are included in the meal.

Trang 8
A. everything you need to satisfy your hunger
B. large quantities of protein
C. only a small amount of carbohydrate D. all the required nutrients in proper amounts
4.What is a staple food?
A. A food that plays an important role in a healthy diet.
B. A food that is high in nutrients but low in calories.
C. A food that makes up a significant portion of a person’s diet
D. A food that provides a large amount of starch.
5.Which is not considered as a starchy carbohydrate?
A. spaghetti B. fruit salad C. breakfast cereals D. toast

When you hear how I learned a foreign language, you have to remember a few things. In 1993,
when I was starting to learn English, no one had heard of the internet. I wasn't able to read websites
on topics that I found interesting or follow blogs. And I have no idea how I decided which movies
to see without my favourite movie review website. My reading practice was limited. All I had were
the few books on sale locally. For listening practice, I only had the news and cartoons on cable TV.
People bought and rented VHS videos but in Poland there was no spoken English on them. The
only way to hear that was to visit the movies. My dictionaries were all in book form until I
received my first PC dictionary. It came on at least six disks and had unhelpful explanations and
few example sentences. It doesn't sound very useful but I loved it because of its ability to work
with other programs and find English words more quickly. Today, computerised dictionaries have
simple explanations and lots of examples. If I were a complete beginner learning English today,
I'd
spend hours on the web, reading about my favourite topics, downloading
up-to-date
movi
emailing English-speaking friends and posting comments on forums.

A. Read the text below and decide which answer A, B, C or D best fits each space WHAT
WILL I BE DOING? Hi Nguyen,
Many of my friends have started talking about their future career though we still have three more
years to go before we finish our school education. Some want to have a nine-to-five job like a bank
clerk, some want to be something more creative like a designer, and my friend Dan even dreams of travelling into space.
For me, my plan for the future will take far more than three years to accomplish. After getting a
university degree, I will fulfil my long dream: joining the Peace Corps, which is a volunteer
programme run by the United States of America. This programme allows young people to work
abroad for two years with schools, non-profit organisations, and charities… in areas like education and agriculture.

Earth, our beautiful home planet, is the only astronomical object to accommodate life as we know
it. Scientists believe Earth was formed approximately 4.5 billion years ago. It is the fifth-largest
planet in our solar system. Its equatorial diameter is about 12,074 kilometres. Earth is the
thirdclosest planet to the sun. The distance from Earth to the sun is roughly 149,600,000
kilometres. It takes 365.3 days for Earth to orbit the sun, and 24 hours to rotate on its axis. The
surface temperature ranges from -88 to 58°C. Nearly 70 percent of Earth's surface is covered by
ocean, which has an average depth of about 4 kilometres. In 2015 it was estimated that 7.3 billion humans are living on Earth.

C. Read the letter from Duong to Jenny, and choose the best answer for each of the questions Dear Jenny,
It's great to learn that you have been granted a scholarship to study at Queens' College, a
prestigious part of Cambridge University, and that you will be able to pursue your dream of
becoming a biologist.
I've decided to take a break for a while.
Wish you were here to go with me to Da Nang. Duong
1.Jenny is going to study at Queens' College because ______________________.
A.she has been granted a scholarship
B.she wants to study biology there
C.it's a prestigious college in the UK D.all of the above
2.Which of the following is most likely NOT true of Ha Noi High School?
A.It's one of the best schools in Ha Noi.
B.It has also non-academic subjects.
C.It merely focuses on providing knowledge. D.It provides both good knowledge and skills.
3.Duong wants to work in the Institude of Mathematics because ______________________. A.he can earn a lot of money
B.he can travel to many countries C.his dad is a mathematician D.he loves mathematics
4.He intends to obtain ______________________. A.a doctoral degree only
B.a doctoral degree and the necessary skills C.a
bachelor's degree and the necessary skills D.a master's degree and the necessary skills
5.An example of soft skills can be ______________________. A.driving a car
B.communication skills C.knowledge D.a sense of humour
6.The word extracurricular mostly means ______________________. A.academic B.compulsory C.additional D.outside
D. Read the passage carefully. Decide if the statements are true (T) or false (F) ROBOT TEACHERS
Trang 6
If robots could cut the time teachers spend marking
homework and writing reports, teachers would have more time and energy for the parts of the job humans do best.
1.The text is mainly about _________.
A. what we should eat to be healthy
B. the careful food choices we need to make
C. the different reasons we eat what we eat and a healthy diet

3.A healthy, balanced diet consisting of several food groups provides _________. Trang 7
A. everything you need to satisfy your hunger
B. large quantities of protein
C. only a small amount of carbohydrate D. all the required nutrients in proper amounts
A. spaghetti B. fruit salad C. breakfast cereals D. toast
6.Which is not true about a healthy diet?
A. Eat a variety of foods in proper amounts.
B. Make starchy foods the basic of most meals.
C. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.
D. Limit consumption of milk and dairy products.
F. Read the text carefully, then choose the correct answer for each of the questions
If I were a complete beginner learning English today, I'd
spend hours on the web, reading about my favourite topics, downloading up-to-date movi
emailing English-speaking friends and posting comments on forums.
