PART III: READING COMPREHENSION (3 marks)
Reading passage 1
Is it good to live with your friends?
Xander and Oscar met for the first time while they were studying in Dublin, Ireland. “We
met in the first year of college, but we got to know each other in the second year,” says
Xander. “We didn’t decide to share an apartment together until the third year, and that’s when we started to argue.”
Now, they are both in their mid-twenties. “Before we shared an apartment, we were best
friends. But when we were studying and living together, it was terrible. We were sharing
this tiny, depressing apartment, and Oscar is a very disorganized person, which made life lOMoARc PSD|36126207
really difficult. We had a falling out.” “I don’t think I’m disorganized, I think I’m just …
easygoing!” replies Oscar. “You see!” says Xander. “That’s why we had to live apart!”
Today, Xander’s home is a bright, modern, spacious apartment in a new apartment building.
Everything is neat and tidy. Oscar has a small, cozy house in the suburbs. “You see, the
problem with Xander’s apartment is that it has no personality. Everything is minimalist.
There’s almost no furniture and only a few pictures. For me, it’s like living in an art gallery,
and it’s quite an unsociable place.”
“And for me,” replies Xander, “Oscar’s house is full. Just full of things, and really untidy.
Books, furniture, everything, everywhere you can imagine. There’s nowhere to take your
coat off! It makes me anxious walking through the front door. He loses everything. Last
week, he lost his keys and didn’t find them for four days.”
“We’re still good friends,” continues Xander, “and we work in the same building, but since
we know that we have very different personalities, it will always be better for us to live in
our own places. I look forward to seeing him every day as we usually meet up for lunch.
We’re always in touch and text each other most days, too.”
“Of course, I reply immediately!” laughs Oscar. You can see that he’s joking. “Not living
together makes a big difference. We finish work and go home to our own spaces. By the
way, do you know where my cell phone is? I’m not sure …” Their lives may be different
now, but some things will never change.

Reading passage 2
Advantages of Living in a Big City
Do you live in a big city? It is said that living in big cities is expensive because of the
high living cost(1). There are also pollution and traffic problems that make living in big
cities unpleasant. However, many people enjoy living in big cities because they offer
convenience and countless options for entertainment.
Many big cities already have good public transportation systems, which make it easy for
the citizens to go anywhere around the city(2). This also reduces and helps overcome the
problem of traffic jams that often occur at peak times. With the convenience of public
transportation, the citizens do not have to drive everywhere and can save money as they do
not have to pay for parking charges.
Staying healthy is everybody’s concern and in big cities you can find the best possible
medical care for any diseases, especially the severe ones. Moreover, compared to rural
areas, access to medical treatment is easier because there are always clinics or medical
centers that open 24 hours in many parts of the city so you can get medical help anytime,
as soon as you need it(3). Reaching hospitals is also easier as public transport is usually available 24 hours a day.
There is a saying that big cities never sleep. This is true for some cities in which the
nightlife begins just when people in other cities are ready to go to bed. Big cities like New
York, Madrid, London and Paris have vibrant nightlife. People can still find entertainment,
dine out or go shopping into the early hours.
City dwellers are usually more diverse and there are many communities that hold social
events or parties, which provide interesting opportunities for social interactions and social
networking. The social interactions allow you to learn about other cultures and share
interests with people from different backgrounds, which makes you more open minded and lOMoARc PSD|36126207
able to understand individuals. On the other hand, the social networking helps you to
broaden not only personal but also professional relationships.
All in all, living in big cities is more convenient because of the complete facilities
provided. The advanced transportation system enables the citizens to access public
facilities easier, cheaper and faster. Big cities also provide better education and health
service. In addition, city life is more fun and exciting because there is a wide range of
entertainment to enjoy and a lot of social events to attend.
Reading the passage 2. Answer the questions 11-15
11. Why do many people like living in big cities?
12. What is the advantage of a good public transportation system?
13. Why is it easier to get medical treatment in big cities?
14. What can people in big cities do in the early hours but people in rural areas cannot?
15. What is the benefit of attending social events?
