Read the following passage about the environment and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your
answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 23 to 30.
The escalating crisis of environmental pollution demands urgent global attention. Industrial
activities, coupled with unsustainable consumption patterns, release a myriad of harmful
substances into our air, water, and soil. This contamination disrupts delicate ecosystems, leading
to biodiversity loss and threatening the health and well-being of both humans and wildlife. The
consequences range from respiratory illnesses and waterborne diseases to the long-term
degradation of vital natural resources.
Deforestation, driven by agricultural expansion and logging, further exacerbates environmental
challenges. The clearing of forests not only eliminates crucial habitats for countless species but
also diminishes the planet's capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, a primary driver of climate
change. The loss of these natural carbon sinkscontributes significantly to global warming and
its associated impacts, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and disruptions to
agriculturalcycles.
Climate change itself stands as a monumental environmental threat. The increasing
concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, largely due to the burning of fossil fuels, is
causing a significant rise in global temperatures. This warming trend is triggering a cascade
of effects, including melting glaciers and polar ice caps, altered precipitation patterns, and
more frequent and intense heat waves, droughts, and floods. These changes pose severe risks
to food security, water availability, and human settlements.
Addressing these complex environmental issues requires a multifaceted approach. Transitioning
to renewable energy sources, adopting sustainable agricultural practices, promoting responsible
waste management, and implementing robust conservation efforts are crucial steps. International
cooperation, coupled with individual responsibility and a fundamental shift towards a more
environmentally conscious way of life, is essential to mitigate the damage and safeguard the
planet for future generations.
Question 23: Which of the following is NOT explicitly stated as a consequence of
environmental pollution?

A. continuous B. manageable C. damaging D. balanced
Question 25: The phrase "carbon sinks" in paragraph 2 refers to _______.

C. layers of the atmosphere D. types of fossil fuels
Question 26: The word “monumental” in paragraph 3 could be best replaced by _______.
A. minor B. temporary C. significant D. trivial

Question 28: Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Deforestation helps to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
B. Climate change is primarily caused by industrial activities.

Read the following passage about Modern Times and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your
answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 31 to 40.
[I] Probably the most famous film commenting on twentieth-century technology is Modern
Times, made in 1936. [II] Charlie Chaplin was motivated to make the film by a reporter who,
while interviewing him, happened to describe working conditions in industrial Detroit. [III]
Chaplin was told that healthy young farm boys were lured to the city to work on automotive
assembly lines. [IV] Within four or five years, these young men's health was destroyed by the
stress of work in the factories.
The film opens with a shot of a mass of sheep making their way down a crowded ramp.
Abruptly the scene shifts to a scene of factory workers jostling one another on their way to a
factory. However, the rather bitter note of criticism in the implied comparison is not sustained. It
is replaced by a gentler note of satire. Chaplin prefers to entertain rather than lecture.
Scenes of factory interiors account for only about one third of the footage of Modern Times, but
they contain some of the most pointed social commentary as well as the most comic situations.
No one who has seen the film can ever forget Chaplin vainly trying to keep pace with the
fast-moving conveyor belt, almost losing his mind in the process. Another popular scene
involves an automatic feeding machine brought to the assembly line so that workers need not
interrupt their labor to eat. The feeding machine malfunctions, hurling food at Chaplin who is
strapped into his position on the assembly line and cannot escape. This serves to illustrate
people's utter helplessness in the face of machines that are meant to serve their basic
needs.
Clearly, Modern Times has its faults, but it remains the best film treating technology within a
social context. It does not offer a radical social message, but it does accurately reflect the
sentiments of many who feel they are victims of an over-mechanized world.
(Adapted from TOEFL Success)

Chaplin learned about the harsh realities of factory work during an interview.
A. [I] B. [II] C. [III] D. [IV]

Question 33: The word "jostling" in paragraph 2 is OPPOSITE in meaning to _______.
A. hurrying B. colliding C. cooperating D. separating
Question 34: According to paragraph 3, which of the following is NOT a scene mentioned in
Modern Times?
A. Chaplin struggling to keep up with a fast-moving conveyor belt.
B. An automatic machine feeding workers without stopping their work.
C. Chaplin getting trapped in machinery due to a malfunction.
D. Chaplin protesting for machine malfunctions and his position.
Question 35: Which of the following sentences best paraphrases the underlined sentence in
paragraph 3?
A. The scene effectively demonstrates how people can become reliant on machines for even
their most fundamental requirements.
B. This moment highlights the complete lack of control individuals experience when machines,
intended to assist them with essential tasks, malfunction.
C. It clearly shows that machines, despite their purpose of aiding with basic needs, often
complicate people's lives and make them feel inadequate.
D. The event underscores the irony of people being completely dependent on technology even
for simple actions like eating.
Question 36: The word it in paragraph 4 refers to _______.
A. Modern Times B. a radical social message
C. the social context D. technology
Question 37: Which of the following sentences best summarizes paragraph 4?
A. Despite some shortcomings, Modern Times is a flawless masterpiece of social commentary
on the dangers of twentieth-century technology.
B. Although not perfect, Modern Times effectively captures the feelings of those who feel
overwhelmed by an overly mechanized world within a social context.
C. Modern Times offers a clear and radical social message about the development and the
dangers of an overly mechanized world within a social context.
D. The film's primary strength lies in its detailed and accurate depiction of the technological
advancements of the 1930s.
Question 38: Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Modern Times offers a clear solution to the problems of industrialization.
B. Only a small portion of Modern Times depicts factory settings.

Question 40: Which of the following best summarizes the passage?
A. Modern Times is a comedic film that humorously depicts the daily lives of factory workers
in the 1930s in industrial Detroit.
B. Inspired by real accounts of industrial labor, Chaplin's Modern Times uses satire to
comment on the impact of technology on individuals in the modern world.
C. The film Modern Times is a powerful critique of the capitalist system and the exploitation
of workers in industrial settings.
D. Through memorable scenes in a factory, Modern Times tells the story of young farm boys
struggling to survive in an urban industrial environment.

This serves to illustrate
people's utter helplessness in the face of machines that are meant to serve their basic needs.
Clearly, Modern Times has its faults, but it remains the best film treating technology within a
social context. It does not offer a radical social message, but it does accurately reflect the
sentiments of many who feel they are victims of an over-mechanized world.
