Teaching is not simply imparting knowledge. As parents and students have more
and more needs and demands for quality education, teachers not only have to constantly
learn to improve their professional knowledge but also have to equip themselves with the
knowledge and skills necessary to be able to impart that knowledge to our students,
especially in the current stage of development. So how can teachers develop necessary
workplace skills? How to make the lesson effective and leave an impression on students?
What do they need to prepare? Let's find out in this discussion.
II. WHAT TO DO BEFORE DEVELOPING SKILLS? 2.1. Think about career goals.
As you consider how you can expand your skill set at work, start by thinking about
your career goals. What kind of position do you want to have in the long term? Once you
answer that question, you can better determine where your current skill set is lacking. To
do so, start by searching for relevant jobs that match your career goals. Once you see a job
description of a role that interests you, you can begin to piece together where you need to
improve. For example, perhaps you would like to manage a team of your own in the
future, but you lack the leadership experience. As a result, you would want to find
opportunities to lead a project or initiative in your current role.
2.2. Reassess your strengths and weaknesses.
Identifying our strengths and weaknesses can help us understand our abilities and
limitations, allowing us to set realistic goals and develop strategies for achieving them.
By focusing on our strengths, we can maximize our potential and achieve greater success
in our personal and professional lives. 2
Identifying our weakness also allow us to improve upon them and work to overcome
them. Additionally, knowing our strengths and weaknesses can help us to be more self-
aware and to better understand how others perceive us, which can be useful in personal
and professional relationships. Overall, identifying our strengths and weaknesses can lead
to improved self-awareness, more effective goal setting and strategies, and better relationships with others.
So, five effective steps can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses:
List your strengths: The concrete skills and knowledge you’ve acquired through
work experience and education may come to mind first. The softer intrinsic
strengths may be less obvious but more fundamental. Look back to your earlier
jobs and to your time at school. What did you enjoy most? What were you best
at? Your current job may hold clues. Pay attention. Look for surprises.
Ask others for input: Ask current or former colleagues for honest feedback
without pulling punches. They may mention strengths you don’t recognize,
raise questions about the strengths you do mention, or ask questions that lead
you to imagine new strengths. Get the ball rolling by asking questions like
these: What am I best at? What strengths might I build on? What are my
weaknesses? What jobs should I avoid? What jobs should I target?
Revisit past feedback: Reread your old performance appraisals or recall
coaching from supervisors, even if it’s about a different kind of position.
“Hire” yourself: Think about hiring yourself for your current job, as if you
didn’t already have it. Ask yourself why you would — or would not — be hired for this job. 3
Revisit your strength list: Return to your first list of strengths, and modify it to
reflect what else you’ve learned. Categorize and rank that list. Be specific.
Generic strengths are easy to state. They’re seldom helpful. Specific strengths
are credible. They will naturally target you to some opportunities.
III. HOW TO DEVELOP HARD SKILLS?
3.1. Definition of hard skills.
The term hard skills refers to job-specific abilities or knowledge learned through
education, hands-on experience, or training. In practice, hard skills are either the technical
skills needed to perform a certain job or a general set of expertise (such as project management).
When searching for a new job, emphasizing your hard skills is key to taking the
next step in your career because your hard skills prove that you’re qualified and ready to
take on the challenges of the position that you applied for.
However, hard skills alone don’t translate into success, as employees also need
other skills, such as soft skills. Unlike soft skills, hard skills focus on practical abilities
and skills, whereas soft skills focus on behaviors and personalities, such as social and
communication skills. In fact, recent survey results show that most hiring managers
specifically look for hard skills at first when scanning applicants’ resumes.
For example, if you wanna be a Software Developer, you will need some of these hard skills:
Programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C++)
Web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
Software development frameworks (e.g., React, Angular)
Database management (e.g., SQL, MySQL) 4
According to data published by LinkedIn in September 2022, some of the top trending hard skills are: Customer service Sales Accounting Marketing Social media Engineering
Structured query language (SQL) … 3.2
The importance of hard skills in the workplace. For the employees:
Hard skills provide the foundation for performing tasks proficiently and
effectively, allow employees to meet the technical requirements of their job
and deliver high-quality work consistently.
Hard skills help employees to upgrade their CVs and consequently will help
them to be more confident and outstanding with other employees.
Developing relevant hard skills can lead to promotions, salary increases,
and access to higher-level positions within an organization.
Employees who possess specialized technical skills that are in high demand
are less likely to be affected by automation or outsourcing.
For the headhunters and companies: 5
Headhunters rely on hard skills to understand the specific skills needed for a
position, ensuring candidates possess them to match the role's technical requirements.
In-demand hard skills indicate a candidate's expertise in areas that are
valued by employers. Headhunters consider the relevance, proficiency, and
uniqueness of a candidate's hard skills to determine their market value and competitiveness.
Employees with strong technical expertise are more likely to come up with
creative ideas, contribute to research and development efforts, and drive
innovation, leading to company growth and success. 3.3
