lessons (2–4). There are two headings you don’t need. There is an example at the
beginning (1).
A. Don’t be scared of travelling.
B. Be ready to talk to people you don’t know when you are in your hometown
C. Always be ready to change your itinerary during a journey
D. Sometimes be careful when you are on buses, trains or planes.
E. Be prepared to meet people who are different to you when you’re travelling
F. Never be afraid of listening to other travellers’ advice.
The lessons I learned from travelling
Lesson 1: ___ ________A
Before I went travelling for the first time, I worried about it. I was frightened that something
might go wrong. I soon learned not to worry. Here are some other lessons I learned.
Lesson 2: ____________
One of the first things travel taught me is that things won’t always go according to plan: buses
will break down, flights will be delayed, and maps will occasionally be difficult to read. These
problems made me more patient and helped me accept that I can’t control most things. They
4
also resulted in some exciting adventures – the woman in Marrakech, for example, who, when I
asked her for directions, invited me into her home for coffee.
When we’re traveling, our most memorable experiences are usually the result of something we
didn’t plan. We should continue to think like this when we get home from our travels when
things don’t go to plan, we should enjoy the adventure.
Lesson 3: ____________
Growing up in Virginia, I rarely met people who were very different from me. That changed
when I moved to London. I soon found myself at a dinner party where every guest came from a
different country. You can learn a lot from listening to people from different places.
When I began travelling beyond Europe, I experienced many different cultures. I celebrated the
Hindu festival Diwali in India and families in Turkey invited me to stay in their homes. Now, in
my new hometown of San Francisco, whenever I pass a mosque or a temple, I’m happy that I
live in a multicultural city.
Lesson 4: ____________
When I’m travelling, I have an open heart and mind. I smile at people I pass on the street and
talk to people on the bus. I ask their name and learn a bit of their story. Now that I’m home, I
try to be as friendly as I am when I’m travelling.
Earlier this year, a young Asian man asked me for directions. I decided to start a conversation
with him. I learned his name was Chien Yu, and that he was from Taiwan. He told me stories
about growing up in his grandmothers home, and taught me how to say thank you in his native
language. Even at home, we can have experiences and meet people. Thinking like a traveller,
when we’re at home, helps us understand the world better.

How jobs have changed
Economics, politics and new technologies have changed many industries. We’ve chosen three
jobs to look at how they have changed.
The music industry
Musicians in the 1960s had two choices form a band and play hundreds of concerts in local
town halls for very little money or try to persuade a record label to sign you. (0)
9
__ _________D Record companies don’t sign new bands on long contracts anymore, and
musicians have a lot more control over their careers. There is a lot they can do by themselves.
(1) ____________ And musicians can also use the internet to become popular by uploading
songs and videos, and talking to fans. Often, musicians release their first album through small
inexpensive distribution companies. One problem for young musicians nowadays is that there
aren’t as many places to play as there were in the 1960s. That’s why musicians often play music
in the street.
Journalism
From typewriters to Twitter, journalism has changed a lot over the past 25 years. In the past,
reporters didn’t have search engines like Google to find out information. ____________(2)
Today, journalists use Twitter to send live updates from a court case or council meeting, and can
write their stories at the same time on laptops, tablets or phones. They don’t have to write notes,
then return to their office to write up the story on a typewriter. Everything is quicker and easier.
One problem for reporters nowadays, however, is that new technologies mean new demands.
(3) ____________ Now, they have to update websites, write Facebook pages and create video
content as well.
Publishing
Before computers, editing a book was very different from today. Writers typed their books on
paper and sent them to publishing companies by post. Then editors used different coloured pens
to go through their writing and to change or correct what they wrote. ____________(4)
Nowadays, digital technology means that writers and editors work on books and articles on
their computers. It’s good news for trees, and good news for writers and editors who can delete
and replace the things they write easily. One problem for the publishing industry is that people
don’t always pay for their books nowadays. Today, you can often find illegal(5) ____________
downloads of books on the internet.

READING
Read the following interview and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D to each question.
Reporter: How long have you been a doctor?
Turner: Eight years.
Reporter: How did you get started?
Turner: I went to medical school for four years. Then, I practiced with another, more
experienced doctor named Clarissa Parker. Clarissa taught me how to see patients and how to
understand their problems. She also taught me how to give people shots!
Reporter: How do you stay calm on the job?
Turner: I use my training. I think back to the time I spent learning with Clarissa. I remember
how calm she was, even when things got . With so much going on at once, you never chaotic
know what will happen next in the emergency room.
Reporter: Are there any new tools that doctors use?
Turner: We use a stethoscope that allows us to listen to a person's heartbeat. We also use special
thread to close deep cuts. The thread disappears after two weeks. This means we do not have to
remove the thread after the cut has healed. It is already gone!
Reporter: Do you heal pets and other animals?
Turner: No, I do not. A veterinarian is a doctor that heals animals. I only heal people.
Reporter: Do you ever get nervous?
Turner: There is no time to be nervous. I have to think about what I have to do to help my
patients. If they are in pain, I want to make them feel better as soon as possible.
Reporter: What do you like best about being a doctor?
Turner: Helping people!

We were really looking forward to arriving at the holiday apartment we had booked near the
beach on a beautiful Greek island. However, when we arrived, we were quite annoyed to find
that nobody had cleaned the place. We tried to phone the holiday company to complain but it
was Sunday and nobody answered our calls. I spent two hours cleaning the place myself. Then
there was a knock on the door. It was the holiday rep. She explained that we were in the wrong
apartment. We had opened the wrong door – both apartments could be opened by the same key.
When we packed our bags and moved next door, it was really clean!

A few years ago, we went to Mexico on holiday. It was our first holiday with our two young
daughters, Megan and Kate. We had brought a really big bag full of clothes for them. However,
when I opened the bag, I couldn’t believe what I saw. There were no clothes in it just some
toys, a doll, some toilet paper and small plastic balls. I thought, for a moment, that my husband
had played a joke. Then I realized that the two girls had repacked the bag. I had left it in their
room. Megan had removed the clothes and put her favourite things in it instead! I wasn’t
annoyed. I just laughed and laughed. But we had to go and buy new clothes for the girls!
C
Two years ago, my husband and I went on a beach holiday in the Caribbean. On the last day,
we decided to book a day trip on a boat. When we arrived in the harbour, we asked which boat
was ours and were told to get on a big white boat. It wasn’t what we had expected. There was a
bar on the boat and a lot of balloons with 21 written on them. Lots of people started getting on
the boat until it was really crowded. They all seemed to be in their twenties and from Brazil.
Before long, the boat set off. It was then that somebody asked us if we were Luis’ grandparents.
It was only then that we realized we were on the wrong boat and that we were on a party boat
for Luis’ 21st birthday. The boat trip lasted five hours and the music was very loud, but we had
a great time. I’m 67 and my husband’s 74. We don’t usually go to such exciting parties.

READING
6. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D.
The Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean are one of the natural wonders of the world. The
Galapagos are home to many rare animals, such as giant tortoises, sea birds and dolphins. The
islands first became famous in 1859 when Charles Darwin wrote about them in his book, On
The Origin of Species. When Darwin visited the islands, he found there a key to that great
mystery of mysteries - the first appearance of new life on this earth.
Today the islands belong to Ecuador, and 97% of the area is a national park. However, despite
this protection, the park is in danger. The most serious threat comes from illegal fishing, which
is slowly destroying marine life. Every day, illegal nets trap and kill sharks, pelicans and
dolphins. Another threat comes from animals brought over by people who have come to live on
the islands. Dogs and cats eat the sea birds, and rats and pigs eat turtle eggs. Although tourism
is seen as a positive thing, it too has caused problems.
Today the Galapagos is still a wonderful place, but how long will this last? The answer lies in

the attitude of everyone who can make a contribution - the Galapagos belongs to the whole
world.

READING
Read the following passage and choose the correct letter A, B, C or D for each question.
Horton
At first glance, there is little in Horton to attract people. The other nearby towns have much
more to offer: Bradfield has its river and historic buildings, while Newtown has shops and
entertainment. The buildings of Horton look dirty and unloved. For shops, there is a small
supermarket, a few bargain shops, a bakery which, strangely, does not sell bread and a florist
which has one stand of sad-looking flowers. Even so, Horton has several advantages over its
neighbouring towns.
Firstly, it has a country park. Four thousand years ago, this was an important fort. There are no
historic remains here now, but there are wonderful views over the countryside. On sunny
weekends you can often see kids out with their parents, kicking balls or flying kites.
There aren’t many job opportunities in Horton, and the roads to nearby cities aren’t really fast,
but there are excellent rail links. You can be in London in an hour and a half, and other cities
are less than an hour away. That means that parents can earn a good salary and still get home in
time to spend the evenings with their families. Houses in Horton aren’t pretty, but they’re
functional and cheap. The streets are quiet and safe, and there are plenty of parks and
playgrounds. It has a library, three primary schools and a secondary school, St. Mark’s. It’s not
as academically brilliant as other schools in the area, but it is friendly and offers a wide range
25
of subjects and activities to children of all abilities and backgrounds. The town also has a
swimming and a sports centre, and the community halls hold regular clubs and events for
people of all ages.
1. What is the writer’s main purpose?
A.
To explain what tourists can do in Horton.
B. To explain why Horton is a good place to live.
C. To explain why Horton is not as pleasant as other towns.
D. To describe the history of Horton.
2. What part of Horton does the writer find disappointing?
A.
The shops B. The country park C. Transport links D. The schools
3. What type of people is Horton most suitable for?
A.
Wealthy professionals
B. Low income families
C. Elderly people
D. Sport and history students
4. What advantages does Horton bring to workers?
A.
There are plenty of jobs available in the town.
B. You can drive to nearby cities in a short time.
C. You can get to several cities quickly by train.
D. Working conditions are better here than in other towns.
5. Which of the following is the best description of Horton?
A. Quiet, country town which has a number of good leisure facilities.
B. Friendly, historic town which is a great place to live, work and take a holiday.
C. Busy, industrial town which has good links to neighbouring cities.
D. Dirty, unpopular town which has little to offer visitors or residents.

D. Sometimes be careful when you are on buses, trains or planes.
E. Be prepared to meet people who are different to you when you’re travelling
F. Never be afraid of listening to other travellers’ advice.
The lessons I learned from travelling
Lesson 1: ___A________
Before I went travelling for the first time, I worried about it.
They 4
also resulted in some exciting adventures – the woman in Marrakech, for example, who, when I
asked her for directions, invited me into her home for coffee.
When we’re traveling, our most memorable experiences are usually the result of something we
didn’t plan. We should continue to think like this when we get home from our travels – when
things don’t go to plan, we should enjoy the adventure.
Now, in
my new hometown of San Francisco, whenever I pass a mosque or a temple, I’m happy that I live in a multicultural city.
He told me stories
about growing up in his grandmother’s home, and taught me how to say thank you in his native
language. Even at home, we can have experiences and meet people. Thinking like a traveller,
when we’re at home, helps us understand the world better. WRITING

The answer lies in 21
the attitude of everyone who can make a contribution - the Galapagos belongs to the whole world.

Even so, Horton has several advantages over its neighbouring towns.
Mark’s. It’s not
as academically brilliant as other schools in the area, but it is friendly and offers a wide range 25
of subjects and activities to children of all abilities and backgrounds. The town also has a
swimming and a sports centre, and the community halls hold regular clubs and events for people of all ages.

4. What advantages does Horton bring to workers? A.
