1. SPEAKING Work in pairs. What is a penfriend? Think of three reasons why
somebody might want a penfriend in a different country.

Penfriend is someone who you write friendly letters to regularly, but you have never met.
Three reason why somebody might want a penfriend in a different country:
- create a deeper connection with someone in another country.
- improves your writing skills and your language skills.
- learn more about different cultures.
2. Read the advertisement from a website for international penfriends above. What
information does Adam ask for?

3. Read the task and the message below. Does Vinh provide all of the information
that Adam asks for? What does Vinh ask for more information about?

5. SPEAKING Work in pairs. Request the following information from your partner.
Use different phrases from exercise 4 and verbs like tell, explain, describe, etc.

B: My favorite one is rap music.
A: Would it be possible for you to explain why you love it?
B: I am interested in rap music because I love the fast melody and cool lyrics. Whenever
I listen to it, I feel much more energetic.
6. Read the Writing Strategy. Then look at the message in exercise 3 again. Does
Vinh develop the points or does he just write a single sentence for each one?

Hi! My name is Bao and I’m from Viet Nam. I’m sixteen years old and I was born and
grew up in Ho Chi Minh City. We have lived here for 10 years. My family has four

I would like to have an English penfriend because I have a great passion for learning
languages, especially English. Moreover, my teacher also encourages me to have a pen
friend because it will help me improve my English writing skills. I usually get a B for my
writing test. I also have an opportunity to know more about your culture. I am extremely
curious about how your country celebrates Tet every year. In Vietnam, Tet is the biggest
event and we all look forward to it to gather together and receive lucky money. Would
