IN CLASS HAND WRITING P O S T A D V A N C E D PROCESS OBJECTIVES
By the end of this lesson, you will learn:
• the structure of a process report
• language used in process reports
• sequence information logically IN CLASS PRACTICE
A.PROMPT ANALYSIS AND OUTLINING EXERCISE A.1
Work in pairs. Look at the diagram below and discuss the questions 1 - 7.
The diagram shows the making of pencils. 1
1. What does the process describe?
2. What are the main materials?
3. How many steps are there in the process?
4. What do the first and final steps involve?
5. Look at the image for stage 4:
a. Can you guess what happens at this stage?
b. What is the end result of this stage?
6. Look at the image for stage 5. Can you guess
a. What the machine used to make “thin slats” from the big logs is called? b. What “treated” means?
c. Why the slats must be “treated”?
7. If the report is to be divided into 2 paragraphs, at which stage of the process should this division be made?
8. Can you guess what will happen to the pencils once they are packaged?
TIPS FOR ANALYSIS AND OUTLINING
STEPS TO ANALYZE A MANUFACTURING PROCESS
1. Read the prompt and the title to identify what the process describes.
2. Identify how many stages there are in the process. 3. Identify
a. the source materials/ingredients b. the first and last stage
4. Look at the cue word and image for each stage to identify
a. What “actions” are involved (Ex: cut, heat, hard-pressed etc)
b. What tool/material is used (Ex: a slicer, chemicals etc)
c. The duration of the stage (Ex: 4 months, 14 years, 2 hours etc)
d. What the end result of each step is (Ex: thin slats, dried slats etc)
5. If possible, decide on the stages at which the detailed description can be divided into 2 paragraphs. 2 STRUCTURE 1. The introduction:
a. consists of 1 sentence only
b. expresses what the given diagram describes 2. The overview: a. consists 1 or 2 sentences
b. expresses at least 2 of the following key information
▪ how many steps the process has
▪ how the process begins and ends
▪ what equipment or ingredients are used 3. The body:
a. describes each stage in details (order, action, end result etc) b. consists 1 or 2 paragraphs
Note: Write 2 paragraphs when there are two processes in one visual or there are many steps in one process. EXERCISE A.2
Apply the tips above to fill in the outline for the report on the visual.
Write key words ONLY.

1. In general, the process is not only efficient, because all parts of the tree are used, but also ecofriendly.
