How well do you know your cat?
Cats and humans have lived together for thousands of years. Wild cats were already living in human settlements, in
Mesopotamia, as early as 12,000 BC. They were appreciated because of their ability to catch and kill mice and rats.
However, most experts agree that they were probably domesticated in Egypt, around 4,000 years ago. In Ancient
Egypt, these beautiful animals were an important part of religious life and the figure of a cat, or a woman with a cat’s
head, was an important and popular goddess.
T oday, we don’t believe that our pet cats are goddesses, but we are extremely fond of them and treat them with
particular love and affection. But why is this, and where do our cuddly pets go when they’re not asleep on the couch?
How well do we really know them? A BBC documentary called The Secret Life of the Cat tried to find out the answers to
these questions. T he filmmakers got the owners of 50 cats to agree to have cameras and GPS trackers fitted to their
pets so researchers could study their behavior when they were not at home or out hunting at night.
Although the documentary was entertaining and viewers learned a lot about what cats do without us, it didn’t really
answer the question as to why humans are so fond of cats. In fact, probably the most important discovery to come
out of the program is that our pet cats are really just wild animals that we allow into our homes and feed. Maybe the
only reason we don’t notice that they are cruel killers is that they are not very big compared to their wild cousins.
Because they are relatively small, we are not afraid that they will eat us during the night, but they are definitely not
very different from a wild tiger in the jungle!
16 Choose the correct answers (a, b, or c).
1 T he article says that cats have lived alongside humans for … A a thousand years. B about 4,000 years. C more than 10,000 years.
2 Cats were initially valued by humans because … A they were beautiful. B of their hunting skills. C they had magical powers.
3 T he BBC documentary focused on … A

4 What did the documentary not do? A
Explain the popularity of cats as pets. B Observe cat-hunting behavior. C
Answer questions about what cats are like.
5 Why are people not aware of how dangerous cats are? A
Because they don’t look like tigers. B Because they are not very big. C
Because we think of them as pets. Score: / 5 Read the text.
Another measure of intelligence
When we talk about how intelligent a person is, we usually judge them based on how well they can do things like solve a
mathematical problem or understand difficult ideas. But what about “emotional intelligence”? What is it? What role
does it play in communication and can it be taught or developed?
Emotional intelligence is a form of intelligence that is different from the way we usually judge how clever someone is.
Some people naturally have both kinds of intelligence. Others may only have one or the other. T he people who have it
are able to understand how others feel, as well as recognizing and managing their own feelings. T his helps them avoid
unnecessary arguments and build better relationships with others. If you can understand your own feelings, manage
stressful situations, and control the way you react to anger, then this shows you possess this form of intelligence. But why is it useful?
It is useful because it can help everyone build better, stronger relationships with friends, family, and coworkers. This
means it is a very useful skill for managers and business owners to have. It is a quality that helps leaders develop
relationships with people in ways that inspire and encourage them to do better. It also means that people will be more
able to manage situations, such as disagreements, that could have a negative effect on their working environment.
It’s certainly true that some people naturally show more emotional intelligence than others, but this does not mean it
cannot be developed. Just as a good learning environment can help us be better at math or history, it can also help
develop emotional intelligence. With good training methods, anyone can learn to recognize their own feelings and
then control and use them well. For example, you can learn not to react in anger when others upset you. You can learn
that being understanding and giving encouragement to other people has better results than fighting with them.
In the end, emotional intelligence is one of the most important qualities for a leader to have, and it is a skill that
everyone can work to develop and improve.
17 Choose the correct answers (a, b, or c).
1 T he article says that people … A
can have two kinds of intelligence. B
don’t usually have natural emotional intelligence. C
can only have one form of intelligence naturally.
2 One sign of emotional intelligence is … A
using arguments to get what you want. B
avoiding people you don’t like. C
having the ability to control emotions.
3 Leaders need emotional intelligence … A
so that employees know who is the boss. B
to help them motivate other people. C
so they can act less negatively at work. 4
How can people learn to develop emotional intelligence? A
It’s mainly a skill that people naturally have. B
By working with others to recognize negative emotions. C
In the same way they develop other forms of learning.
5 What does the word “it,” in bold in paragraph 4, refer to? A emotional intelligence B math and history C a good learning environment Score: / 5 Read the text.
T he future of our planet: are governments doing enough?
Many of us are becoming more and more worried about climate change. How will global warming affect the future of
our whole planet? Does the planet even have a future? T here are also other questions to which people want an
answer. T he questions are, “Why are governments so slow to react to the crisis? Why are they doing nothing to
reduce the damage?” T his damage could result in the disappearance of our own species!
Unfortunately, these are not simple questions and it’s not easy to give simple answers. Not all issues can be expressed
in phrases like “Ban plastic” or “Stop burning fossil fuels now!” The situation is incredibly complicated because our
planet, its economies, and its financial systems all depend on each other. Our planet is, in many ways, just a global
village. And since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, whether we make cars in Germany, steel in China, or
computer parts in India, we have used fossil fuels to power our factories around the world.
If the governments of the world stopped making products, vehicles, plastics, metals, and so on, what would happen?
If our factories stopped burning fossil fuels, what would the result be? Well, first of all, millions of people would
immediately become unemployed. They would have no money to pay for food and bills. Transportation systems,
banks, and the whole economy of many countries would probably stop working, and this would have terrible
consequences for millions of people.
World governments have to use technology to solve the problems we are facing. They should find a way to build new
energy systems which don’t use fossil fuels. Then we can continue with our way of life, but without destroying the
planet. T here can be little doubt, though, that they do need to do much more and much faster.
18 Choose True, False, or NS (not stated).
1 Most people understand that governments are trying to solve the problems. T rue / False / NS
2 Systems across the world are connected to each other. T rue / False / NS
3 China uses more fossil fuels than any other nation. T rue / False / NS
4 If we suddenly stopped using fossil fuels, people’s lives would improve. T rue / False / NS
5 Developments in technology are harmful to the planet. T rue / False / NS Score: / 5 READING 2 Read the text. News in the digital age
In recent years, there has been a change in the way people receive news and information. Fewer and fewer people are
buying what is called print media. Print media is the newspapers and magazines that you can buy from a bookstore or a
newspaper stand we see on the street every day. Instead, many people have been getting more and more of their news and information online.
A lot of people still read the newspapers and magazines they have always read, but have simply switched from buying
a printed paper to reading it on an online website. Others, however, are looking for alternative sources of
information. T hey read blogs or visit sites related to an issue or topic they are interested in and get their information
from these sites rather than from the site of a traditional newspaper organization.
On the one hand, this can be a good thing because people are using many more sources of information. T here are
people writing blogs who are experts in certain areas, and they may be better informed than a journalist who hasn’t studied that subject.
But there are also a lot of dishonest people on the internet spreading false stories to attract attention and because
they want to influence how people think. Even some of the traditional news media organizations have exaggerated
some stories in order to attract users to their sites, and this has led to a situation where many people no longer know
who to trust for news and information.
It’s very important for society to have sources of information that people can rely on so that they can tell the
difference between facts and false information. If people no longer trust traditional journalists, we could end up with
a world where all news is fake, and information becomes a method of control rather than a way to educate and communicate with people.
19 Choose True, False, or NS (not stated).
1 Print media is only sold in specialized places that are hard to find. T rue / False / NS
2 Most blogs are written by professional writers. T rue / False / NS
3 According to the writer, some journalists are not well-informed about the subjects T rue / False / NS they write about.
4 T he writer thinks traditional news organizations sometimes use dishonest methods. T rue / False / NS
5 News is no longer important in the digital age. T rue / False / NS Score: / 5
