Subject: Using Data to Build Business Practice ASSIGNMENT
MANAGERIAL REPORT – CHAPTER 8
CASE PROBLEM 1 – YOUNG PROFESSIONAL MAGAZINE
1. Develop appropriate descriptive statistics to summarize the data.
The data is divided into two main kinds of variable:
First, quantitative variables include Age, Value of Investment, Number of
Transactions and Household Income. Then, we have qualitative variables including
Gender, Real Estate Purchases, Internet Access and Have Children.
We will use the Data Analysis – Descriptive Statistics from Excel to build the
Descriptive Statistics table for quantitative variables. The table is shown below:
For the qualitative variables, we will use the Pivot Table to analyze them. The
results are illustrated in the table below:
2. Develop 95% confidence intervals for the mean age and household income of subscribers.
By using StatTools, we will have this result:
In conclusion from the result table, the 95% confidence interval for the mean age
is (29.722; 30.503). And the 95% confidence interval for the mean household
income of subscribers is (71,079.23; 77,839.77).
3. Develop 95% confidence intervals for the proportion of subscribers who have
Internet access at home and the proportion of subscribers who have children.
By using StatTools, we will have this result:
In conclusion from the result table, the 95% confidence interval for the
proportion of subscribers who have broadband access to Internet at home is
(57.75%, 67.13%). And the 95% confidence interval for the proportion of
subscribers who have children is (48.59%, 58.24%).
4. Would Young Professional be a good advertising outlet for online brokers?
Justify your conclusion with statistical data.
According to the data from question 1, we can see that the mean of their total
value of financial investment is $28,538. However, the mean of household income
is $74,460 with the maximum of $322,500 and several of household have the
amount more than $100,000. In addition, we can also look at the number of
transaction they made to invest in stock/ bond/ else. The mean number is
approximate six transactions per year, but there are a lot of people who made more than six transactions a year.
Finally, we can notice that 62% of subscribers have broadband access to the
Internet at home, so this leads to the fact that they are likely to work with online
brokers. This will definitely make Young Professional to be a good advertising
outlet for online brokers
5. Would this magazine be a good place to advertise for companies selling
educational software and computer games for young children?
According to the data from question 1, the mean age of subscribers is 30.11.
In addition, 53% of them have children. From those two variables, we can
conclude that their children are still very young. So, this magazine will be a good
place to advertise for companies selling educational software and computer
games for young children.
6. Comment on the types of articles you believe would be of interest to readers of
Young Professional.
Firstly, we can mention some articles about finance, investment or banking
because a lot of subscribers are interested about them. Secondly, they also made
purchases of real estates so articles about modern design or buildings make catch
their eyes. Thirdly, for this development of technology, articles about IT problem
may bring a huge curiosity from subscribers, especially because they are still in
their 30s, they will be more interested in the change of the world. Finally, most of
them had children so articles about parenting or childcare will be really useful for
them. From that, they can learn how to care about their children as well as focus
on their work and search for financial and investing information.
