PHẦN VI: READING
Kevin Costner: A Cinematic Icon
Along with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Cruise, Kevin Costner is one the three biggest cinema names in the
world today. Some people think he is more than that, and compare him to the great movie stars of the past, to
actors audience trusted to carry the message of the American dream. They say that Costner has that same special
magic, that same natural, effortless quality, that made Spencer Tracy, Gary Cooper and James Stewart great stars.
Costner has a different understanding of his stardom. ‘People just don’t get it,’ he says. ‘It’s all in the script. If you
have a great script, you’ll attract great actors, you’ll get great directors. I usually don’t choose a script unless there
are three or four roles I’d be willing to play myself. That way I know the movie will attract world-class actors.’
‘Kevin got lucky with Field of Dreams,’ says a Hollywood executive, ‘and now he thinks he’s a cinematic genius.
Kevin has no great genius in picking scripts. Just look at Revenge; it was a dog. But I’ll tell you what he knows
better than any other actor, with the possible exception of Dustin. He knows what he can play and what people
want to see him do. That’s his genius.’
‘The one thing that Kevin has is truth,’ says Wallis Nicita, the producer who discovered Costner ten years ago,
when she was a casting director. ‘People see that he believes in everything he says or does, so he makes it true for
them.’
‘If I were judging it, I’d say that Kevin Costner is going to last,’ says Frank Price, the former head of Columbia
Pictures, who has been an important name in Hollywood for more than fifteen years. ‘After watching Costner in
Bull Durham, my reaction was, boy, he’s got the kind of strength Gable had. I haven’t seen that in years. If I were
making Gone with the Wind, I’d cast Costner. He’s the one person who’s got the strength to do Gable’s role.’
Everyone agrees that Costner displays amazing determination in a business that can test the strongest ego. He
worked line by line for more than two years on the script of Dances with Wolves, which bears his personal stamp
from beginning to end and for which he raised the initial financing from foreign sources. He then ignored the
objections of several major studios and refused to cut out the Sioux subtitles. When it looked as though he were
going to run overbudget and the studio sent insurance bondsmen to the set, Costner offered to give half of his $5
million salary in order to help. During the shooting, some of the Indian actors failed to learn their lines or had to
be taught how to shoot with a bow or arrow. ‘I reminded them that this was a project about their people, that if it
didn’t turn out well, they’d be embarrassed, not me, Costner told Elaine Dutka, who covers the film industry for
the Los Angeles Times. ‘I warned them that if they wasted my time, there had better be a good reason.’
‘His work ethic is enormous,’ Rob Guralnick tells me. ‘He works harder than anybody I’ve ever known. He proved
it with Dances with Wolves. While everybody in Hollywood was laughing, he was out there just concerned with
keeping his eye on the ball. It was like being in a cage with people banging on the bars. But he never stopped.’

Students who start businesses
A. Lisa James
As she's doing business studies, it may not be surprising that Lisa James has set up her own company, but it's
happened on a much greater scale than she'd envisaged. The idea for Carefree Flowers came from a visit to a
friend who was in hospital. Real flowers were banned, so instead, Lisa created an arrangement of origami paper
ones, each containing an individualized message. Before long, Lisa and her mother, Maria, had set up Carefree
Flowers to cater for the demand. Lisa handles the marketing and design. 'Mum does the rest, so I can do my
coursework, though not much else I don't go to parties, for example.' She's also good at managing her time. 'It's
something I got used to at school I did competitive athletics and had to fit it around schoolwork.' Lisa plans to
continue developing the business, but she can't look too far ahead. 'Someone else might see the potential in it and
take our trade away. That'd hurt, but if it happened, I guess I'd start another business.'
B. Joanna Payne
Joanna Payne is in her final year of a computer science degree. Her university offers 'sandwich' courses, meaning
that students can spend year three of a four-year degree working for a business. When Joanna proposed devoting
the year to setting up her own business, her lecturers were hesitant but agreed. Joanna launched Buccaneer
Productions, specializing in creating games for smart phones. The three games she's released so far have impressed
the university so much that it's now policy to encourage sandwich-year entrepreneurship. Joanna's sandwich year
was busy, but her life is even more hectic now as she has to juggle lectures and a dissertation with running the
business. 'I'd love to go out at weekends like my course mates do, but I can't afford the time,' she says. The apps
market is really fast-moving and tough, and you've got to keep on top of it, otherwise it can all come crashing
down.' The upside, of course, is that Joanna now has a pretty good idea of what it takes to set up an apps business.
C. Alexis Taylor
When Alexis Taylor graduates in psychology. she will leave university with a well-established business, Taylor
Tutors. The company offers one-to-one tutoring for high school students. All the tutors are students with recent
experience of school. Alexis came up with the idea in her first year. 'It seemed an obvious way to earn some
money,' says Alexis. 'I set up a database of students from my university, did some marketing in local schools, and
it pretty much evolved as I'd imagined. I don't know why no one else has done it. I worry they might do actually.'
She thinks she was fortunate to have chanced upon a mentor, John Martino, an older businessman who kept her
on track at times. Her business and the degree are both relatively flexible, but Alexis admits to having missed
classes and deadlines in her hectic lifestyle. 'Also, I probably haven't done as much reading as I should've
psychology's a heavy subject in that sense.' But she's convinced she's done enough, and her entrepreneurial
experience will stand her in good stead.
D. Zoe Roberts
Two months after Zoe started her art degree, her bicycle was stolen. 'It was a real shock and I immediately wanted
to do something,' she says. With the help of a lecturer, she designed a 'cycle wrapper', a cover to reduce bike theft
and protect bikes from the weather. Eighteen months later, it's still just a prototype. Zoe has set up a company,
filed a patent, talked to potential investors and manufacturers, and even persuaded the university authorities that
the 'wrapper' could bear the university name. But a product launch still seems a distant concept. 'I had no idea it
would take so long,' she says. I've spent as much time on this project as on my degree. Sometimes I wonder
whether it's been worth it. But it's transformed me. I'm much tougher than I used to be. People have told me to
give up. They say the 'wrapper' will never work. But a gut feeling tells me it'll come good and I need to stick with.
As a poor student, I've got nothing to lose really so that's what I'll do.'

‘People see that he believes in everything he says or does, so he makes it true for them.’
‘If I were judging it, I’d say that Kevin Costner is going to last,’ says Frank Price, the former head of Columbia
Pictures
, who has been an important name in Hollywood for more than fifteen years.
‘I reminded them that this was a project about their people, that if it
didn’t turn out well, they’d be embarrassed, not me,’ Costner told Elaine Dutka, who covers the film industry for
the Los Angeles Times.

Students who start businesses A.
'It's
something I got used to at school – I did competitive athletics and had to fit it around schoolwork.' Lisa plans to
continue developing the business, but she can't look too far ahead. 'Someone else might see the potential in it and
take our trade away. That'd hurt, but if it happened, I guess I'd start another business.' B.
'Also, I probably haven't done as much reading as I should've –
psychology's a heavy subject in that sense.' But she's convinced she's done enough, and her entrepreneurial
experience will stand her in good stead. D.
