(QUY TẮC ĐÁNH TRỌNG ÂM)
1. Với những từ có 2 âm tiết:
- Danh từ hoặc tính từ rơi vào âm tiết thứ 1
Ex: 'happy, 'busy, 'picture, 'cancer
- Động từ rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2 Ex: re'peat, be'gin, 2. Tận cùng là ATE:
- Có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 1.
Ex: 'classmate, 'climate.
- Có 3 âm tiết trở lên thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 3 kể từ dưới lên.
Ex: con'gratulate, o'riginate.
3. Các từ có trọng âm rơi vào chính nó là các từ có tận cùng như: - ee - de'gree - eer - engi'neer - ese - chi'nese - ade - lemo'nade - oo - bam'boo - oon - bal'loon - ette - ciga'rette - ique - u'nique - esque - pictur'esque - mental - funda'mental
4. Các từ có trọng âm rơi vào trước nó là các từ có tận cùng như: - ic - ro'mantic - ish - 'finish - ion - 'nation - ian - poli'tician - ial - 'special - ical - techno'logical - (i, e, u) ous - de'licious, - (i, e, u)ty - pub'licity
5. Trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 3 tính từ vần cuối khi kết thúc tận cùng là: ize/ise, phụ âm + y (Trừ ly)
Ex: 'organize, 'industry, 'chemistry
Chú ý: Danh từ chỉ các môn học có trọng âm cách âm tiết cuối 1 âm tiết Ex: ge'ology, bi'ology 4

Ngoại lệ: CENtigrade, COMrade, DEcade ; COffee, comMITtee, ENgine, PEdigree; CUkoo; TEAspoon
6. Từ ghép (từ có 2 phần)
- Đối với các danh từ ghép thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất.
Ex: 'blackbird, 'greenhouse, 'raincoat
- Đối với các động từ ghép trọng âm rơi vào V chính.
Ex: over'come, over'flow, under'stand.
- Đối với các Tính từ/ Liên từ/ Giới từ ghép thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết đầu tiên của từ thứ hai.
Ex: bad'tempered, old'fashioned, home'sick, with'out, how'ever 7.
- Trọng âm thường rơi vào nguyên âm dài, nguyên âm đôi. Ex: Di'sease
- Các hậu tố và tiền tố không có trọng âm (Khi thêm hậu tố thì không thay đổi trọng âm)
Ex: Im'portant -> unim'portant
'Beauty -> 'beautiful
8. Từ lưỡng tính: Nếu là danh từ thì rơi vào thứ nhất, còn là động từ thì rơi vào thứ hai.
Ex: - (n) 'visit, 'import, 'report
- (v) vi'sit, im'port, re'port
9. Dựa vào độ dài, độ mạnh, độ cao, độ vang của các âm tiết trong 1 từ để suy ra trọng âm. Ex: 'confident (adj) PRACTICE

I. CÁCH PHÁT ÂM TẬN CÙNG LÀ S/ES/ED
1. Tận cùng là ‘s/es’:
- Phát âm là /ɪz/ khi từ tận cùng bằng các phụ âm gió /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/
Ex: Kisses, dozes, washes, watches, etc.
- Trừ các âm gió kể trên, chúng ta phát âm là /s/ khi từ tận cùng bằng các phụ âm vô
thanh KHÔNG rung: /θ/, /f/, /k/, /p/, /t/ (thời fong kiến phương tây)
Ex: waits, laughes, books, jumps, etc.
- Phát âm là /z/ khi từ tận cùng bằng các âm còn lại: hữu thanh CÓ RUNG
Ex: names, families, loves, etc.
2. Tận cùng là ‘ed’:
- Phát âm là /ɪd/ khi các âm kết thúc là: /d/ or /t/.
Ex: Wait —–> waited, Add —–> added
- Phát âm là /t/ khi âm kết thúc là âm vô thanh KHÔNG RUNG: /p/, /k/, /f/, /θ/, /s/, /ʃ/,
/tʃ/ (thường là các chữ cái p, k, f, s, sh, ch, gh)
Ex: Jump —> jumped, Cook —–> Cooked, Cough —–> Coughed
- Phát âm là /d/ khi các âm còn lại kết thúc là âm RUNG
Ex: Rub —–> rubbed, drag —–> dragged, Love —–> loved * Notes: - gh: f / dʒ
- Tận cùng là se thì ta + ing => s/z - th: /θ/ or /ð/
- “fax” kết thúc bằng chữ “x” nhưng đó là âm /s/
“like” kết thúc bằng chữ “e” nhưng đó là âm /k/
- Chú ý là âm cuối mới là quan trọng chứ không phải là chữ cái cuối
* Một số từ bất quy tắc đọc là /id/:
- Aged, blessed, crooked, dogged, learned, naked, ragged, wicked, wretched, rugged,
unmatched, crabbed, cursed, racred. II. NGUYÊN ÂM
1. Chữ nguyên âm đơn thường được phát âm như sau:

- Những qui tắc trên chỉ là những cách đọc phổ biến, chúng ta còn gặp những trường hợp
ngoại lệ. Chúng ta nên ghi nhớ cách phát âm của các từ khi học từ vựng mới.
- Cách phát âm các nguyên âm còn khác nhau ở các từ loại khác nhau:
Ex: invite /ɪn’vaɪt/ (v); invitation /,ɪnvɪ’teɪʃn/ (n)
