False. TICK your answer in the appropriate box on the right.
VENICE CARNIVAL
In January or February, Venice plays host to the most
magical of carnivals. During the carnival, the city is
filled with a mass of masked partygoers, posing and
dancing, in an attempt to reinvent one of the great
traditions of the city. Naturally, it is very crowded and
hotels and restaurants are expensive, but it is a unique
occasion and a great time to experience this beautiful
city.
The carnival was first held in Venice in the 11
th
century
and lasted for over two months. Activities involved a
series of formal parties in St Mark's Square and playing
games for money. Regardless of social status,
participants wore costumes and masks. The original function of masks in Venice was both practical and
aspirational: a person in a mask could be who they wanted to be, and do what they wanted to do. Images of
the time and occasion are still displayed throughout the city today. During the 18
th
century, however, this
period of festivities came to an end, and the carnival did not return until 1979. Today, the carnival is extremely
popular with people eager to dress up and parade around the city in their masks and costumes.
The weekends are the busiest times at the carnival -the final weekend in particular. During the festivities, you
can enjoy live music and take part in a large open-air festival. Costumes are also a major feature of the
occasion and there is even a competition to judge the best one. The best ones are usually displayed at the
centre of carnival festivities, in the breathtaking St Mark's Square. Numerous shops in Venice sell these
costumes and masks in preparation for this great event. Perhaps the most attractive aspect of the Venice
carnival, though, is the variety of masked balls and parties there are to attend. You do have to pay for these,
however, and they can be quite costly. One of the most expensive parties is the Valentine's Grand
Masquerade Ball, held on February 14th at the Palazzo Flangini.
One of the best ways to experience Carnival is to simply wander the city, especially around Piazza San
Marco, admiring the professionals in their elaborately over-the-top costumes as they pose for the cameras, all
competing for the "Best Costume" award.
A full programme of events is available on the carnival's official website; highlights include the opening
masked parade, which starts at Piazza San Marco and winds around the surrounding streets, and the theatre
performances that take place in the square. On Sunday, don't miss the boat and gondola procession down the
Grand Canal. Carnival in Venice is an unforgettable experience and a great time to see the city in a new and
exciting light.

WHO CAN YOU TRUST?
Despite predictions that the traditional media were going to disappear in the internet age, newspapers, the
radio and television have managed to survive. However, their survival has come at a price. Digital technology
has given birth to social media, tools that allow ordinary people to create, share and exchange information
without the need for the usual news channels. Moreover, social media is also attracting a large share of
advertisers' money away from the traditional media. As a result, newspapers, the radio and television are
always looking for ways to hurt their new rival and they are more than happy to publish stories that play on
people's fears about how untrustworthy and unsafe social media is.
When Zilla van den Born left home for a five-week trip around South-East Asia, she promised her family in
Amsterdam that she would keep in touch and she did. Zilla regularly uploaded photos to her Facebook page of
herself on the beach, on sightseeing trips and dining out. She also made Skype calls to her family to tell them
that everything was going just as she had planned. And it was, but not as she had led her family to believe
because Zilla hadn't gone abroad; she was in her flat in Amsterdam. The reason for Zilla's devious behaviour
was her university project, which aimed to demonstrate how social media can distort the truth. Zilla certainly
succeeded. In her flat she made out she was on holiday - photoshopping pictures by inserting images of
herself into photos of South-East Asian beaches and temples. For the Skype calls, she used old Christmas
decorations and a Chinese paper umbrella to disguise her bedroom and create an Asian hotel room. When
Zilla finally let on that her holiday had been a hoax, her family admitted that they had been completely taken in.
Zilla explained that the experiment demonstrated how today we can manipulate reality and the press loved the
story. Here was a perfect example of why people should only trust the traditional media.
However, while the mainstream media takes every opportunity to expose the dangers of social media, social
media has become good at demonstrating that the traditional press is also far from perfect. As all football fans
know, the sports media has to work harder between matches to fill their pages and sites. The most popular
method of doing this is by speculating about the players that clubs might buy or sell especially talented
foreigners. However, many readers often suspect that these stories are the products of lazy journalism and, if
not completely false, contain very little truth and a lot of exaggeration. One Irish football fan decided to find out
by using social media to invent Masai Bugduv, a sixteen-year-old football superstar from the small Eastern
European so country of Moldova. The fan set up a Wikipedia page for the player that explained that Bugduv
had already played for his national team and that his nickname was 'Massi'. He then wrote false press agency
stories that claimed Bugduv would soon join Arsenal and sent them to sports blogs. The blogs accepted the
stories as true, but the big surprise came when The Times newspaper included an article entitled Football's
Top 50 Rising Stars. At number thirty on the list was 'Moldova's finest', sixteen-year-old Masai Bugduv, who
had been linked with Arsenal and 60 'plenty of other top clubs as well.'
While most people would agree that the traditional press should warn people about the dangers of new
technology, it is also good to know that social media can expose the unprofessional practices of some
journalists. The more they zoom in on each other's unacceptable practices, the better for the readers.

Well, I promised earlier to give you more information
about those wildlife trips to the island of Madagascar.
Madagascar is famous for its unusual animals and birds
and this company offers excellent group tours guided by
experts. The best time of year to look at wildlife is from
late August to November, and these tours are all
happening in September which is perfect. Now, whether
you are travelling from the States or Europe you need to
connect with the Air Madagascar flight from Paris
departing every Monday at 20:25 and flying nonstop to
the island arriving Tuesday morning at the International
Airport. There are many flights on from here to all parts of
the island. Oh, and before you leave the airport you will
need to get a tourist visa but don't worry, I'm told by the
travel company this doesn't take long. Each group tour
starts with a two-night stay in the central part of the island.
Here there are some excellent lectures by the guides to
introduce you to the wildlife you will see. Then, for the
remaining fifteen days you will travel through
Madagascar's national parks which are home to many
animals and beautiful birds. I should also tell you that you
can add on a further seven days after the end of the
wildlife tour in order to go driving. This takes place in the
northern part of the island with a variety of fish and other
sea life is amazing. To find out more about Madagascar's

A1. Read the following text and decide if the statements below are True or 1 each = 5 marks
Naturally, it is very crowded and
hotels and restaurants are expensive, but it is a unique
occasion and a great time to experience this beautiful city.
The carnival was first held in Venice in the 11th century
and lasted for over two months.
During the 18th century, however, this
period of festivities came to an end, and the carnival did not return until 1979.
Carnival in Venice is an unforgettable experience and a great time to see the city in a new and exciting light. STATEMENTS TRUE FALSE

A3. Read the text and the questions below. For each question (1-4) tick 2 each = 8 marks
the correct letter (A-D).
Tick your 1
