II.6. Some ways to overcome culture shock
Adjusting to life at a foreign university/country is a challenge for international
students. This article has gathered the coping strategies that students need to refer cope with culture shock.
According to Oberg (1954), without language proficiency, you will not be successful
because it serves as the main sign system for communication Ther .
efore, overseas students
must know the language of the country they come to study abroad. Any language is difficult, so
students will spend less time learning the language to focus on the major, and easily find a
part-time job. Besides, being fluent in foreign languages will help students confidently
communicate and absorb culture quickly.
If students have some understanding of the local culture, some of the surprises that may
come up in the future will be lessened (Nguyen, 2023). Before studying abroad, learn about the
new country's lifestyle and culture, or customs. Try to make friends, be sociable and open your
heart to people. Confidently when interacting with people, using “body language” or “speak with
your hand”. Gradually, when catching up with life and getting to know many people, the anxiety about culture will disappear.
“Keep trying and ask for assistance when student pupils need it” (Nguyen, 2023,
p.370). Although learning a new culture can be difficult, students who are confident and willing
to ask for help obtain valuable life experiences. The simplest way to get in touch with helpers
is through social media. For instance, contact the teachers at the school or ask for experience
from some of the older brothers and sisters on the student forum.
Nguyen (2023) propose finding stores or eateries is the best way when students miss
their family and the food they ate at home. Bring along traditional Vietnamese spices to make
your dishes just like at home. Students should also receive guests such as inviting friends to visit
their home and cook together. Over time, students will slowly get used to and adapt to the new taste.
Get as involved in your community as you can because you can experience culture
shock as a result of feeling like an outcast (Nguyen, 2023). Participating in festivals,
volunteer programs, or holidays in a new country. Engaging in the student's preferred form
of exercise, such as cheering, chess, or jogging. It's one of the best ways to build themselves and a friend network. III. Conclusion
In summary, there are many causes of culture shock leading to its signs and impacts.
From there, the solutions to this problem can be deduced.
The most crucial stage in surviving culture shock while studying abroad is to
psychologically get ready for unfamiliar emotions and to believe in yourself even though students
are aware that will make mistakes before student feel overwhelmed. Although studying abroad
can be difficult, students will eventually find at least one location where they belong, a setting
suitable for making connections with people who share their interests and assisting them in
bridging the gap inside themselves. Finally, keep in mind that integration is not the same as assimilation (Nguyen, 2023).
