Phrasal verb (1)
Pronunciation Sound /ɑː/, /æ/ and /e/
GRAMMAR
I. QUESTION WORDS BEFORE TO-INFINITIVE (TỪ ĐỂ HỎI ĐỨNG TRƯỚC ĐỘNG
TỪ NGUYÊN MẪU có TO)
• Ta có thể dùng từ để hỏi (wh-words) who, what, where, when, how... trước động từ nguyên mẫu
to (to-infinitive) đdiễn tả một tình huống khó khăn hoặc không chắc chắn. Cấu trúc này tương
đương với một mệnh đề phụ.
Subject + verb (+O) + wh-word + to-infinitive (+O) E.g:
He doesn't know how he can use the washing machine.
He doesn't know how to use the washing machine.
We don’t know what we should do to help the poor child.
We don't know what to do to help the poor child.
Dùng các động từ ask, wonder, (not) be sure, have no idea, (not) know, (not) decide, (not)
tell trước cấu trúc wh-word + to-infinitive.
E.g: I wasn't sure who to ask for information.
Kate wonders when to visit her uncle.
Dùng cấu trúc wh-word + to-infinitive khi:
Chủ ngữ (subject) của mệnh đề chính chủ ngữ của "to-infinitive" chỉ cùng một đối tượng
hoặc cùng nhóm đối tượng.
E.g: Dakota had no idea where she should go.
Dakota had no idea where to go.
They want to know when they should leave for Miami.
They want to know when to leave for Miami.
Tân ngữ (object) của mệnh đề chính và chủ ngữ của "to-inflnitive" là cùng một đối tượng hoặc
cùng nhóm đối tượng.
E.g: My mother told me what I should prepare for the camping trip.
My mother told me what to prepare for the camping trip.
Lưu ý:
KHÔNG dùng why + to-infinitive.
E.g: I don't know why I like her. [NOT I don’t know why to like her.]
Cụm wh-word + to-infinitive không thể đứng riêng lẻ một mình.
E.g: What should we do? [NOT what to do]
II. PHRASAL VERBS (CỤM ĐỘNG TỪ)
1. Định nghĩa
Cụm động từ (phrasal verb) sự kết hợp giữa một động từ với một tiểu từ (adverb hoặc
preposition, hoặc đôi khi cả hai) để tạo thành một động từ mới nghĩa hoàn toàn khác hoặc
mang sắc thái nghĩa khác so với động từ gốc. Tiểu từ có thể là trạng từ, giới từ hoặc một số loại từ
khác.
E.g: take off (cởi ra); look after (chăm sóc); find out (tìm ra)
2. Meaning of phrasal verbs (Nghĩa của cụm động từ)
- Một số cụm động từ nghĩa ràng, dễ hiểu nghĩa của chúng dựa trên nghĩa thường
dùngcủa động từ trạng từ hoặc giới từ: come in (bước vào), come back (trở lại, quay về), sit
down (ngồi xuống), stand up (đứng lên), turn around (quay lại)... E.g: We all stand up when the
teacher comes.
My father came back very late last night.
- Tuy nhiên, phần lớn cụm động từ thường có nghĩa đặc biệt, khác hoàn toàn với nghĩa của
từngtừ riêng lẻ: turn off (tắt), turn on (bật), put on (mặc vào), give up (từ bỏ), look for (tìm kiếm)...
E.g: Norah had turned off the lights before leaving.
He gave up smoking when he was 30.
- Một số cụm động từ có thể có nhiều nghĩa.
E.g: We came home late because our car broke down.
That company broke down just after one year of operation.
She totally broke down after hearing the bad news.
Thông thường, ta không thể đoán nghĩa của cụm động từ qua sự kết hợp từ của nó. Để học nghĩa
của cụm động từ, ta cần nhận biết động từ và tiểu từ [particle(s)] phải kết hợp với nhau hay chúng
có thể tách rời nhau.
3. Phân loại
Cụm động từ có thể được chia làm 4 loại:
a. Cụm động từ có thể tách ra
được
V + O + prep (động từ + tân ngữ + giới từ)
We put out th e fi re. = We put th e fir e out .
b. Cụm động từ không tách ra
được
V + prep + O (động từ + giới từ + tân ngữ)
We should go over th e who le proj ect .
[Không dùng: We should go the whole project over.]
c. Cụm động từ không có tân
ngữ
V + prep (động từ + giới từ)
When we got to the airport, the plane had taken off.
d. Cụm đồng từ gồm 3 từ
V + prep 1 + prep 2 (động từ + giới từ 1 + giới từ 2)

Sedge Mat Craft Village in Tien Giang Province
In the Mekong Delta, Long Dinh village in Tien Giang province is famous for its traditional craft
of weaving flowered mats. The mat's high quality makes them popular domestically, and they are
also exported to markets worldwide, including Korea, Japan and America.
In spite of its well-established reputation for this traditional craft, mat weaving only started here
some 50 years ago. It was first introduced by immigrants from Kim Son, a famous mat weaving
village in the northern province of Ninh Binh. However, the technique of weaving sedge mats in
Long Dinh, as compared with other places in the South, is somewhat different. Long Dinh branded
mats are thicker and have more attractive colours and patterns.
Weaving sedge mats is similar to growing rice. Long Dinh mat production mainly occurs during
the dry season, from January to April. Weavers have to work their hardest in May and June;
otherwise, when the rainy season starts in July, they will have to put off finishing their products
until the next dry season. No matter how much work it requires, Long Dinh mat producers stick
with this occupation, as it brings a higher income than growing rice.
This trade provides employment for thousands of local labourers. At present, nearly 1,000
households in Long Dinh village live on weaving mats. To better meet market demands, Long
Dinh mat weavers have created more products in addition to the traditional sedge mats.
Particularly, they are producing a new type of mat made from the dried stalks of water hyacinth, a
common material in the Mekong Delta.
Thanks to planning and further investment, the mat weaving occupation has indeed brought in
more income for local residents. Their living standards have improved considerably, resulting in
better conditions for the whole village.

____________.

 Question words before to-infinitives  Phrasal verb (1) Pronunciation
 Sound /ɑː/, /æ/ and /e/ GRAMMAR
I. QUESTION WORDS BEFORE TO-INFINITIVE (TỪ ĐỂ HỎI ĐỨNG TRƯỚC ĐỘNG

TỪ NGUYÊN MẪU có TO)
• Ta có thể dùng từ để hỏi (wh-words) who, what, where, when, how... trước động từ nguyên mẫu
có to (to-infinitive) để diễn tả một tình huống khó khăn hoặc không chắc chắn. Cấu trúc này tương
đương với một mệnh đề phụ.
Subject + verb (+O) + wh-word + to-infinitive (+O) E.g:
He doesn't know how he can use the washing machine.
 He doesn't know how to use the washing machine.
We don’t know what we should do to help the poor child.
 We don't know what to do to help the poor child.
● Dùng các động từ ask, wonder, (not) be sure, have no idea, (not) know, (not) decide, (not)
tell trước cấu trúc wh-word + to-infinitive.
E.g: I wasn't sure who to ask for information.
 Kate wonders when to visit her uncle.
● Dùng cấu trúc wh-word + to-infinitive khi:
 Chủ ngữ (subject) của mệnh đề chính và chủ ngữ của "to-infinitive" chỉ cùng một đối tượng
hoặc cùng nhóm đối tượng.
E.g: Dakota had no idea where she should go.
 Dakota had no idea where to go.
They want to know when they should leave for Miami.
 They want to know when to leave for Miami.
 Tân ngữ (object) của mệnh đề chính và chủ ngữ của "to-inflnitive" là cùng một đối tượng hoặc cùng nhóm đối tượng.
E.g: My mother told me what I should prepare for the camping trip.
 My mother told me what to prepare for the camping trip. Lưu ý:
 KHÔNG dùng why + to-infinitive.
E.g: I don't know why I like her. [NOT I don’t know why to like her.] 
Cụm wh-word + to-infinitive không thể đứng riêng lẻ một mình.
E.g: What should we do? [NOT what to do]
II. PHRASAL VERBS (CỤM ĐỘNG TỪ) 1. Định nghĩa
Cụm động từ (phrasal verb) là sự kết hợp giữa một động từ với một tiểu từ (adverb hoặc
preposition, hoặc đôi khi cả hai) để tạo thành một động từ mới có nghĩa hoàn toàn khác hoặc
mang sắc thái nghĩa khác so với động từ gốc. Tiểu từ có thể là trạng từ, giới từ hoặc một số loại từ khác.
E.g: take off (cởi ra); look after (chăm sóc); find out (tìm ra)
2. Meaning of phrasal verbs (Nghĩa của cụm động từ) -
Một số cụm động từ có nghĩa rõ ràng, dễ hiểu vì nghĩa của chúng dựa trên nghĩa thường
dùngcủa động từ và trạng từ hoặc giới từ: come in (bước vào), come back (trở lại, quay về), sit
down (ngồi xuống), stand up (đứng lên), turn around (quay lại)... E.g: We all stand up when the teacher comes.
My father came back very late last night. -
Tuy nhiên, phần lớn cụm động từ thường có nghĩa đặc biệt, khác hoàn toàn với nghĩa của
từngtừ riêng lẻ: turn off (tắt), turn on (bật), put on (mặc vào), give up (từ bỏ), look for (tìm kiếm)...
Để học nghĩa
của cụm động từ, ta cần nhận biết động từ và tiểu từ [particle(s)] phải kết hợp với nhau hay chúng có thể tách rời nhau. 3. Phân loại
Cụm động từ có thể được chia làm 4 loại:
a. Cụm động từ có thể tách ra V + O + prep (động từ + tân ngữ + giới từ) được
We put out th e fi re. = We put th e fir e out .
b. Cụm động từ không tách ra V + prep + O (động từ + giới từ + tân ngữ) được
We should go over th e who le proj ect .
[Không dùng: We should go the whole project over.]
c. Cụm động từ không có tân V + prep (động từ + giới từ) ngữ

Long Dinh mat production mainly occurs during
the dry season, from January to April. Weavers have to work their hardest in May and June;
otherwise, when the rainy season starts in July, they will have to put off finishing their products
until the next dry season.
