The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system composed of over
2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometers over an area of approximately 344,400
square kilometers, as big as a city. Located in the Coral Sea, o the coast of Queensland, Australia, the Great Barrier
Reef can even be seen from outer space!
These coral reefs are made up of ny living organisms called coral polyps. Coral polyps take calcium carbonate
from the ocean water to build their hard skeletons, which form the base of the reef. Millions of polyps working
together over millions of years have created this vast underwater structure.
The Great Barrier Reef is a haven for a mind-boggling variety of marine life. Over 1,500 species of sh, 411 types of
hard coral, 134 species of sharks and rays, and six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles call the reef home.
This incredible biodiversity makes the Great Barrier Reef a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sadly, the Great Barrier Reef faces threats from polluon, climate change, and overshing. Rising water
temperatures cause coral bleaching, which is when coral loses its vibrant colors and dies. Protecng this natural
wonder is crucial for the health of our oceans and the amazing creatures that live there.

Reef can even be seen from outer space!
These coral reefs are made up of tiny living organisms called coral polyps. Coral polyps take calcium carbonate
from the ocean water to build their hard skeletons, which form the base of the reef. Millions of polyps working
together over millions of years have created this vast underwater structure.
The Great Barrier Reef is a haven for a mind-boggling variety of marine life. Over 1,500 species of fish, 411 types of
hard coral, 134 species of sharks and rays, and six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles call the reef home.
This incredible biodiversity makes the Great Barrier Reef a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sadly, the Great Barrier Reef faces threats from pollution, climate change, and overfishing. Rising water
temperatures cause coral bleaching, which is when coral loses its vibrant colors and dies. Protecting this natural
wonder is crucial for the health of our oceans and the amazing creatures that live there.
