What is a bad habit? The most common definition is that it is something that we do regularly, almost without
thinking about it, and which has some sort of negative consequence. This consequence could affect those around us,
or it could affect us personally. Those who deny having bad habits are probably lying. Bad habits are part of what
makes us human.

Many early habits, like sucking our thumb, are broken when we are very young. We are either told to stop doing
it by our parents, or we consciously or subconsciously observe that others do not have the same habit, and we
gradually grow out of it. It is when we intentionally or unintentionally pick up new habits in our later childhood or
early adulthood that it becomes a problem. Unless we can break that habit early on, it becomes a part of our life, and
becomes 'programmed' into our brain.
A recent study of human memory suggests that no matter how hard we try to change our habits, it is the old
ways that tend to win, especially in situations where we are rushed, stressed or overworked. Habits that we thought
we had got rid of can suddenly come back. This is not good news for people who picked up bad habits early in life
and now want to change or break them. Even when we try to put new, good intentions into practice, those previously
learned habits remain stronger in more automatic, unconscious forms of memory.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
How frequently have you forgotten a telephone number, a name, or an address? We all do, and although it may
occasionally cause frustration, it is an inherent aspect of human nature. Worldwide, approximately one in 14 people
over the age of 65 develop dementia—a condition which results in memory loss and the gradual worsening of
mental abilities. It is estimated that there are 50 million people living with dementia in the world, with one person
developing dementia every three seconds. The number of people living with the condition is expected to double
every 20 years, and it is becoming a major challenge for countries all over the world. Alzheimers is the most
common form of dementia, accounting for 60 to 70 percent of all cases.
Researchers are working to find ways to prevent or reverse dementia and memory loss. Currently, however,
there is no cure—only treatments that reduce the symptoms for a limited time. But there is hope. Scientists now
know that Alzheimers patients have high levels of a particular protein in the brain. They believe that this protein is
responsible for destroying nerve cells and causing the disease. Some recent studies have shown that new drugs can
reduce the amount of this protein in the brain, and scientists are hopeful that such drugs may be able to reverse the
effects of the disease in the future.
While we wait for a cure, there are a few things we can do to reduce the risk of developing dementia. Experts
recommend eating a healthy diet, not smoking, limiting how much alcohol we drink, and maintaining a healthy
weight and blood pressure. They also suggest exercising our brains by reading, doing puzzles, and being socially
active. Last but certainly not least, we should have regular physical exercise. Recent research has shown that
physical exercise—like running for at least 30 minutes—causes the brain to create new brain cells. Interestingly, the
Compiled by The English Space & The English Hub for the Specialised Trang 4/5
new cells are produced in the memory area of the brain, which perhaps explains the link between exercise and
improved memory. Now, that is food for thought.
