- Online shopping is a form of e-commerce (electronic commerce) that allows people
to directly purchase items from sellers over the internet using a web browser. Besides,
this involves browsing online stores or marketplaces, selecting items, and completing
the purchase through a digital transaction.
- Booming describes something that is experiencing rapid growth, success, or
expansion. It implies a significant and positive increase in activity, popularity, or
profitability. For example, a booming industry is one that is thriving and growing at an accelerated rate.

Online shopping offers convenience, variety, and access to global products, all from
the comfort of your home. On the other hand, traditional shopping provides a tangible
experience, immediate access to items, and personal interactions.
2.1.3. Impact of “Online shopping” in modern life.
- Global Reach and Market Expansion
Online shopping has expanded the global market by allowing businesses, both large
and small, to sell products internationally . With the rise of global e-commerce
platforms like Amazon, Alibaba, and eBay , companies can reach customers in
different countries without needing physical stores or expensive international
marketing campaigns. This has cr
eated a more open and accessible global marketplace. - Increased Competition
As online shopping connects businesses worldwide, local companies now face direct
competition from international brands. Consumers can easily compare prices and
products from different countries, which puts pressure on local businesses to lower
prices, improve quality, and offer better services to stay competitive. This intense
competition drives innovation, but it also creates challenges for smaller businesses
that struggle to compete with global giants.
- Cross-border Consumer Behavior
Consumers today have access to products from all over the world, changing shopping
habits and preferences. Global fashion trends, technology products, and even food
items are now easily accessible through online platforms. This cross-border shopping
trend has blurred the lines between local and international markets, creating a more interconnected global economy. - Supply Chain Transformation
Online shopping has also reshaped global supply chains. To meet growing consumer
demand for fast delivery, companies must develop efficient international logistics
networks. This involves managing warehouses in multiple countries, streamlining
customs processes, and using advanced tracking technologies. As a result, supply chains have
become faster but also more complex and vulnerable to global
disruptions.Digital Payment and Security Risks
With the growth of online shopping, global payment systems have evolved to support
international transactions across different currencies. However, this has also led to
increased risks of online fraud, data theft, and payment security issues. Businesses and
governments must invest in strong cybersecurity measures to protect consumers and
ensure safe cross-border transactions. - Environmental Impact
Another consequence of global online shopping is its environmental impact. Increased
international shipping leads to higher carbon emissions, while excessive packaging
contributes to global waste. As e-commerce continues to grow , addressing these environmental challenges will
become increasingly important for sustainable development.
2.2. Situation: The expansion of Online shopping.
2.2.1. The historical background of online shopping.
Online shopping began in 1979 when Michael Aldrich, an English inventor, created
the first system that allowed online transactions between businesses and customers.
This marked the earliest form of e-commerce. However, online shopping could not
truly expand until the creation of the World Wide Web (WWW) in 1990 by Tim
Berners-Lee, which allowed websites and online platforms to exist.
In 1994, Netscape introduced SSL encryption, making online transactions safer by
protecting sensitive data like credit card details. This security feature was essential for
building trust in online shopping.
The first major online marketplaces appeared in 1995, with the launch of Amazon and
eBay . These platforms allowed consumers to shop online for a wide variety of
products, changing the retail landscape forever. In
1998, PayPal was introduced, providing a secure and convenient way to make
online payments. Alibaba followed in 1999, offering a global e-commerce platform based in China.
The 2000s brought further innovations, including Google Adwords (2000), which
allowed businesses to advertise products directly to potential customers, and Shopify
(2004), which made it easier for small businesses to create their own online stores. By
2006, PayPal introduced mobile payments, bringing online shopping to smartphones.
Today , online shopping has evolved into a global phenomenon, with purchases
happening across websites, apps, and even social media platforms like Instagram,
WhatsApp, and Facebook. From a simple online transaction system to a massive
global industry, online shopping has come a long way, shaping the modern global economy.
2.2.2. Key drivers of Online shopping growth
Online shopping has witnessed an explosive growth in recent years, and there are
several key drivers that have contributed to this trend. Today, I will discuss three
major factors: the global nature of online shopping, the impact of the COVID-19
pandemic, and technological advancements.
First, online shopping has become a global phenomenon. With the rise of the internet
and smartphones, people from all over the world can shop from the comfort of their
homes, breaking geographical barriers. The ability to buy products from different
countries, often at competitive prices, has led to an increase in cross-border shopping.
Additionally, international e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Alibaba, and eBay
have made it easier for consumers to access global markets, contributing to the overall growth of online shopping.
Second, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on online shopping
growth. With lockdowns, social distancing, and restrictions on physical stores, people
turned to online shopping as their primary means of purchasing goods. Many
consumers who were previously hesitant to shop online, due to factors like
convenience or trust issues, were forced to adapt during the pandemic. As a result,
there was a significant increase in online sales in categories such as groceries,
clothing, and home entertainment. Even after the pandemic, many people have
continued to prefer the convenience and safety of online shopping.
Finally, technological advancements have played a crucial role in driving the growth
of online shopping. Innovations like artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality
(AR), and machine learning have enhanced the shopping experience. For instance, AI-
powered recommendations help personalize the shopping journey, while AR allows
customers to visualize products in their own homes before making a purchase.
Additionally , improvements in payment systems, delivery tracking, and customer
service have made online shopping faster, more secure, and more user-friendly. As
technology continues to evolve, the online shopping experience will likely become
even more efficient and immersive.
In conclusion, the growth of online shopping is driven by a combination of factors.
The global reach of e-commerce, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and
technological innovations have all played pivotal roles in reshaping how we shop
today . As these trends continue to evolve, online shopping will likely remain a
dominant force in the retail industry.
2.3. Advantages and Disadvantages of Online shopping 2.3.1. Advantages
- Convenience and Accessibility - Cost-Effectiveness - Enhanced Customer Experience
- Diverse Marketing Opportunities
The rapid growth of online shopping is driven by several key factors, making it an
indispensable part of today's consumer lifestyle.
First and foremost, Convenience and accessibility allow customers to shop anytime,
anywhere, eliminating geographical barriers and time constraints. With just a few
clicks, consumers can browse and buy products without visiting a store. For example,
platforms like Shopee and Lazada allow users to order international products and
receive them at home effortlessly. This is especially useful for busy people and those living far from stores.
Secondly, cost-effectiveness makes online shopping even more appealing, as online
businesses save on expenses like rent, electricity and staff, enabling them to offer
lower prices, frequent discounts, and exclusive deals. Customers can easily compare
prices across different platforms, ensuring they get the best value for their money.
Additionally , many e-commerce platforms provide free shipping and discounts,
making online shopping a more affordable option for consumers.
Thirdly, online shopping provides an enhanced customer experience through
personalized recommendations, multiple payment options, and fast or reliable
deliveries. Many platforms use AI technology to suggest products based on what you
like, making shopping more suitable for individual preferences. Additionally, easy return policies a
nd order tracking systems provide a sense of security and
convenience, ensuring a smooth and satisfying shopping experience.
Finally , diverse marketing opportunities
enable businesses to reach customers in
multiple ways. Digital ads, influencer collaborations, and social media promotions on
TikTok help brands to reach better consumer demand. By analyzing customer data,
businesses can personalize ads, increase sales and build lasting relationships with consumers.
In short, as technology advances and consumer preferences evolve, online shopping
will keep growing, shaping the future of global commerce. 2.3.2. Disadvantages
However , along with these benefits, online shopping also comes with several
disadvantages that we need to consider. In my speech today, I will talk about four
main problems: logistics and delivery issues, competition and market saturation,
customer trust and satisfaction, and cybersecurity and data privacy.
First, logistics and delivery issues are a big problem. Since more people are shopping online, deliver
y services are under pressure. Sometimes, orders arrive late, and
customers have to wait for a long time.
For example, during big sales events like Black Friday or Singles’ Day, shipping
companies receive millions of orders, which often leads to delays. Also, some
products can be damaged during delivery. For example, if a package is not handled
carefully , fragile items like
glass or electronics can break. This makes customers
unhappy and affects their shopping experience.
Second, there is too much competition and market saturation. Many businesses are
selling similar products online. For example, on the Shopee commercial floor, when a
new product was posted on sale, the next day there were many other places also
selling the same products. In addition, when there are too many options, customers
may feel confused and may not know which products to buy. For instance, when
looking for a phone case, I search and see thousands of options with many different
prices on the market and this makes my purchase process overwhelming.
Third, customer trust and satisfaction are important issues. When people shop online,
they cannot see or touch the product before buying it. Sometimes, the product looks
different from the pictures, or the quality is not as good as expected.
For instance, many customers have experienced the frustration of ordering a stylish
dress online, only to receive a cheap, poorly made version that looks nothing like the
advertised photo. Also, returning a product can be difficult and time-consuming.
Because of these problems, some customers do not trust online shopping and prefer to buy things in physical stores.
Finally, network security and data privacy are serious concerns. The online purchase
requires buyers to provide personal information, such as addresses, phone numbers or
credit cards. In case the website is not safe, hackers can steal this information. For
example, there have been cases where large e -commerce platforms have been hacked,
exposing millions of private data of customers. Therefore, customers may lose money
or become victims of fraud and fraud. Online shopping platforms must improve their
security system to protect customer data.
2.4. Development process
2.4.1. Growth of E-commerce Platforms:
Vietnam is not merely keeping pace with the digital transformation; it is emerging as
a leader in Southeast Asia’s internet economy, with its e-commerce market projected
to reach 60 billion U.S. dollars by 2030. With a tech-savvy population and rapidly
growing internet usage, Vietnam is a fertile ground for e-commerce businesses to
thrive. As a result, the country’s online shopping market is booming, with e-commerce
sales outpacing even some of the most modern retail stores.
2.4.2. Expansion and Diversification:
The expansion and diversification of online shopping have been pivotal in shaping the
e-commerce landscape. This process involves broadening the range of products and
services offered, entering new markets, and adopting innovative business models.
E-commerce platforms have significantly expanded their product offerings beyond
traditional retail items. This includes digital products, services, groceries, and more.
Example: Amazon started as an online bookstore but quickly diversified to include
electronics, clothing, home goods, and even groceries through Amazon Fresh. This
expansion has allowed Amazon to become a one-stop shop for consumers.
The rise of social media has led to the emergence of social commerce, where
consumers can shop directly through social platforms.
Example: Instagram Shopping allows brands to create shoppable posts and stories,
enabling users to purchase products directly from their feeds. This integration of e-
commerce and social media has opened new avenues for brands to reach consumers.
2.4.3. Current Trends and Future Directions:
The online shopping landscape is continuously evolving, driven by technological
advancements, changing consumer behaviors, and market dynamics.
Current trends: Nowadays, E-commerce platforms are increasingly using artificial
intelligence (AI) and machine learning to provide personalized shopping experiences.
This includes tailored product recommendations, personalized marketing messages,
and customized content based on user behavior.
Example: Amazon utilizes sophisticated algorithms to analyze customer data and
suggest products that align with individual preferences, enhancing the shopping
experience and increasing conversion rates.
Future Directions: In the future, the use of AI will continue to grow, with more
advanced chatbots and virtual assistants providing customer support and personalized
shopping experiences. Automation in warehousing and logistics will also improve effi ciency and reduce
costs. The rollout of 5G technology will enhance mobile
shopping experiences by providing faster internet speeds and improved connectivity.
This will enable richer content, such as high-quality videos and AR experiences, to be delivered seamlessly
2.5. Solutions/ Suggestions for a better online shopping experience
Last but not least, I would like to discuss some effective solutions to enhance the
online shopping experience, especially in the context of the current competitive market and various challenges.
One of the most effective ways to enhance logistics and delivery issues is by
implementing real-time order tracking systems. When customers can track their orders
in real-time, it significantly reduces anxiety about delivery times and order status. This
transparency builds trust and enhances the overall shopping experience. A great
example is FedEx, which offers a tracking feature that allows customers to monitor
their shipments in real-time. Customers can see the exact location of their package,
estimated delivery time, and even receive notifications if there are any delays. This not
only keeps customers informed but also builds trust in the delivery process.
Additionally, addressing the issue of competition and market saturation is always a
hot topic of discussion . In today’s crowded market, it’s essential for businesses to
differentiate themselves in order to attract and retain customers. To achieve this, they
must develop a unique value proposition. For instance, a company could offer
exclusive products that are not available anywhere else. A great example of this is a brand like Apple, which
frequently releases limited-edition products that create a
sense of exclusivity and urgency among consumers.
Furthermore, utilizing customer support services can significantly improve the online
shopping experience. In cases where customers encounter issues with an order,
contacting customer support can facilitate returns, refunds, and problem resolution.
Many e-commerce platforms provide help centers with frequently asked questions and
self-service options, allowing consumers to address common concerns efficiently.
Lastly, a crucial aspect of online shopping safety is protecting personal and payment
information. Cybersecurity threats, such as data breaches and identity theft, pose
significant risks to consumers. To mitigate these dangers, shoppers should use strong,
unique passwords for their accounts and avoid storing payment details on websites.
Besides, choosing a reputable e-commerce platwhich, which has strict seller policies
and customer protection can provide buyers with a secure and reliable shopping environment. III. Conclusion
In conclusion, online shopping has grown rapidly due to technological
advancements and global accessibility . Although this online platform provides
convenience and variety , it still has lots of challenges such as security concerns, logistics issues, ...
Consumers can enhance their online shopping experience by adopting smart
shopping habits, reviewing the goods carefully a
nd prioritizing security . Online
shopping has not only changed the way people buy products but also reshaped the
retail landscape. Its growth and significance will continue to expand as technology
progresses, making it an indispensable component of modern commerce.
