Since the beginning of the year 2021, Biden’s administration has been dealing with
the complicated and splitting issue of immigration along the border of America and
Mexico. This situation got worse by President Joe Biden's campaign promise to expand
the number of immigrants, which has drawn an ongoing number of migrant caravan
groups attempting to enter the nation. It is thus under conditions like these that the
government is confronted with the need to investigate humanitarian issues and its border processes at the same time. II. BODY:
a.Pre-Election Immigration Plan (2020):
During his 2020 campaign, Biden unveiled his Pre-Election Immigration Plan,
which aimed to reverse many of the stringent immigration laws put in place by the Trump
administration. This included pledges to stop building the border wall, protect Dreamers
under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, cancel the travel
restriction aimed at countries with a large Muslim population, and establish a route to
citizenship for illegal immigrants. To solve structural problems and preserve American
ideals of inclusivity and compassion, Biden underlined the necessity of comprehensive
immigration reform (Sparks, 2023). 2 lOMoAR cPSD| 45903860
b. Current Immigration Plan (as of August 2023):
According to House (2021), President Biden's immigration plan seeks
comprehensive reform to solve problems along the border between the United States and
Mexico as well as other areas as of August 2023. Modernizing the immigration laws,
giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship, and identifying the underlying reasons of
migration are important components. Humane treatment of migrants is emphasized in the
strategy, along with measures to reunite families that were split up at the border. It also
suggests providing more assistance to Central American nations in addressing issues like
poverty and violence that contribute to migration. However, NBC News published that
several promises, such as giving Dreamers a route to citizenship and removing for-profit
detention facilities, have not been fulfilled.
c. Comparison and Analysis:
The comparison between Biden’s Pre-Election Immigration Plan of 2020 and his
Current Immigration Plan as of August 2023 reveals both continuity and evolution in policy
priorities. The 2020 plan was ambitious, focusing on reversing Trump's stringent policies
by halting border wall construction, protecting Dreamers under DACA, lifting travel bans
on Muslim-majority countries, and providing a path to citizenship for undocumented
immigrants. This approach underscored comprehensive immigration reform to address
structural problems and uphold American values of inclusivity and compassion. By August
2023, Biden’s immigration strategy continued to prioritize comprehensive reform but
adapted to address more immediate border challenges. This included modernizing 3 lOMoAR cPSD| 45903860
immigration laws, humane treatment of migrants, and reuniting families separated at the
border. The updated plan also emphasized addressing the root causes of migration by
aiding Central American countries in combating poverty and violence. Despite these
broader aims, several promises from the original plan remain unfulfilled, such as providing
citizenship pathways for Dreamers and eliminating forprofit detention facilities. The
transition from the Pre-Election Immigration Plan to the current strategy reflects a shift
toward addressing deeper root causes of migration and promoting humane treatment, but
it also highlights ongoing challenges in achieving comprehensive reform and fulfilling all campaign promises.
d. Implications and Future Outlook:
With immigration policy being a key topic in the 2024 presidential election, there
are some considerations needed to be taken about the potential direction of immigration
policy under either Biden administration in 2025 for the United States. According to the
Retail Industry Leaders Association, it is stated that “Each potential administration has
varying approaches to dealing with the longstanding issues surrounding legal immigration
and work visas as well as the swelling border crossings and asylum claims that have
crested to crisis levels.” With Biden’s immigration strategy, he seeks to modernize
outdated immigration laws as a part of the comprehensive reform effort and promote the
humane treatment of migrants. Shortly, if Biden can implement his full immigration plan,
it could represent a significant shift away from the restrictive policies of the past and
towards a more welcoming and humanitarian approach. Furthermore, as all plans might 4 lOMoAR cPSD| 45903860
have obstacles and challenges, the ultimate outcomes will depend on his ability to
overcome political difficulties and implement his vision. e. Evaluation
It can be seen that, after being elected, President Biden tried to do some of the
things he said, but that was not profound, because he focused more on solving border
problems with Mexico and other neighboring countries. This can be considered a wise
move because he knows which problem is more urgent to solve first. Besides, we see
that some promises have not yet been fulfilled, because President Biden might not have
enough potential to fulfill his promises, and immigration and settlement can also easily
get into extreme political situations. However, the US 46th President appears to have
adjusted to the issues and gradually found the right direction for the challenges he
encountered, which included modernizing immigration laws, treating migrants humanely,
and reuniting families separated at the border. This might show that Biden is genuinely
ambitious and determined to implement what he promised to do. Soon, if Mr. President
can fulfill his "dreams", there will be a revolution that will completely change the
circumstances facing immigrants in the US and, consequently, how the public views Biden’s capabilities. III. CONCLUSION: 5 lOMoAR cPSD| 45903860
In conclusion, President Biden's immigration policies from the 2020 campaign to
August 2023 demonstrate both his ambitious goals and the practical difficulties that
prevent implementation. His actions have demonstrated an adaptation to pressing
challenges at the border and a deeper focus on addressing the root causes of migration.
This approach and handling clearly demonstrates humane treatment of immigration
cases, accompanied by long-term solutions to problems related to this group. And this
leads to speculation that Biden's immigration policies will be pivotal in the 2024
presidential election. (Word count: 952 words) REFERENCES:
