US’S $36 BILLION BAILOUT FOR UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES
On June 5th, the United States Department of Education announced to allocate 36
billion USD from the COVID-19 pandemic bailout to over 5000 universities and
colleges in order to support students severely affected by the pandemic.
It has been the biggest aid ever for community colleges, universities, and African-
American colleges and educational institutions for ethnic minorities. “This financial
aid is very significant for students who suffer from difficulties due to the pandemic,
thanks to it, students can continue studying, graduate and pursue their career. Unlike
those previous Covid-19 aids, this bailout also aims at helping those students in the
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program. We are determined not only to
revitalize the post-pandemic education but also to continue to build it stronger”,
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said6.
Half of the 36-billion /aid will be allocated to schools depending on the proportion of
students receiving the Pell Grants Federal financial support program. Following that,
host families meeting conditions will receive direct aid from the aid to pay for food,
accommodations, the Internet, and essential fee to continue pursuing higher
education.
The rest will help schools to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic on campus,
vaccinating students and staff, and attracting students who drop out of school. The aid
also includes paying for student loans that are unable to pay due to the pandemic so
that they can register to continue studying, along with other student support activities
Bill Pink, President of Grand Rapids Public College, Michigan said:” That
Government provided aid is extremely timely and essential in the present time.
Thanks to the previous aids, the school has bought more than 630 laptops and 400
Internet-broadcasting devices for students, simultaneously cooperating with local
libraries to supply mobile internet at 20 places in rural areas in the west of the state.
We have already handed 340 million dollar aid directly to the students having
difficulties.”
