TOPICS FOR FIRST PRESENTATION
1.You have read a little about phonetics, the study of language sounds. What are some
examples of sounds from your language that don't exist in English? Think of both consonants
and vowels. Give examples of words with these sounds. Likewise, what are some English
sounds that don’t exist in your language? Are these hard for you to pronounce?
2. Sign language
3. Dialect
What are some linguistic features that can differ from one dialect to another?
Is it possible for one dialect to be more correct than another? Explain your
answer.
Describe a dialect from your home country. What are some of its distinct features?
Is it a regional or social dialect? Is this dialect changing, and, if so, how?
Or go online and research a dialect in the United States or another country that interests
you. Look for the answers to questions like these: Is it a regional dialect or a social
dialect? What are some of its features? What are its boundaries? Has it changed over
time?
4. Code-switching
5. You have read about business ethics and fraud. Can you think of any other examples of
fraud or ethics violations in business? What happened? Who was to blame? Was anyone
prosecuted (officially accused of a crime)? What could have been done to prevent it?

6. Do some research on a type of business ethics violation. Go online and search for "ethics
violations," or a specific type of ethics violation such as "discrimination," "conflict of
interest," or "breach of contract." Find out a definition of the type of violation, the legal
implications, and some examples.
7. - To whom do you think corporations have the most responsibility: shareholders,
employees, the community, or the environment?
- What rules do you think should be included in a company's code of conduct?
- In your opinion, do most business leaders model ethical behavior? Can you think of any
business leaders who are good role models?
What else can governments or society do to promote ethical behavior?
8. Go online and research a company that has received recognition for being ethical. Find
out why the company is recognized and what the company does to encourage ethical
behavior.
9. - How would you choose a company to work for? Is it important to you that a company
be socially responsible?
-What do you think is the main cause of unethical behavior?
- Have you ever witnessed or heard about any fraudulent behavior? What happened?
What could have prevented it?
10. Go online and research a case of corporate fraud or of a whistleblower who spoke up
about fraudulent behavior. Find out what happened, who was responsible, and whether
anyone was punished for it.
