Q I’m writing to you because of my problem at home. I’m having a really hard time at
the moment. I have arguments with my parents about everything! For example, my mum

music at the same time and tells me switch off completely. But she doesn’t realize that the

A You want your parents to treat you with respect. But show them respect, too. You say
you have a lot to do but I’m sure your mother is also busy. You don’t want to tidy your
bedroom when you’ re doing homework. So, decide on d time that is convenient for you.
Tell your mom what time that is. Then make sure you do it! As for the music, parents and
teenagers always argue about music. Speak your mom calmly. Explain that it helps you to
study. But keep it to a reasonable volume or use headphones. And finally, your bedroom.
Maybe your parents don’t realise that you’re not a little child and more. Explain why you
think it’s important to have a private space. Maybe you’re spending a lot of time in your
bedroom and your parents don’t see you or get a chance to speak to you. When you talk
to parents it makes a big difference. Tell them what’s happening in your life.

As we all know, petrol and plastic are two things that come from petroleum, or oil. A
lot of oil comes from the rainforests though a process called extraction. This has a
very adverse effect on the rainforests, so using fewer oil products can help save them.
Just think twice before asking your parents to use petrol to drive you somewhere in
the car. Ride your bike, walk or take the bus whenever possible. Save plastic by
choosing glass bottles and by reusing the plastic contains and bottles that you already
have. If you have a plastic water bottle, don’t throw it away and buy a new one. Wash
it and use it again and again.
14. Arrcording to the passage, using fewer products from oil can help save … A. Cars B. Plastic water bottles C. Rainforest D. Glass bottles

If we don’t do something soon, electronic products will create serious problems for
the environment. We use more and more energy because we buy more and more
electronic gadgets. If this situation continues, each house will need an incredible
quantity of energy. The popularity of computers and games consoles has created an
enormous need for more power. In the 1970s homes contained, on average, just 17
electronic products. But now some people think that they won’t be able to brush their
teeth if they do not have an electronic toothbrush. And if we forget to switch off all
these electronic gadgets we will use up all our electricity for nothing. 16. Which one is NOT true?
A. In the 1970s, each home contained 17 electronic products.
B. Now people can brush their teeth with an electric toothbrush.
C. Home electronic gadgets can use up all electricity for nothing if they are not turned off.
D. Home electronic gadgets do not use much power.

In our area the council has started collecting rubbish bags every 2 weeks and not
every week. They think this will make us all throw away less rubbish, but it isn’t
working. People still throw away the same amount – it just makes things horrible for
everyone – it gets very smelly and I think it’s bad for people’s health too. Speaker B
At the supermarket there are a lot of different bins for people to throw away different
things like plastic, shoes, bottles and so on. I think this is a great idea and lots of
people use them. The problem at home is that a lot of people don’t have enough room
in their kitchen for all the different types of bins. Speaker C
I think one of the biggest problems is the paper and plastic that comes with nearly
everything we buy! There’s so much of it to throw away. The companies say that now
they use much less than they did before. If that’s true, then they need to do more. Speaker D
These days people are buying new gadgets all the time. Sometimes it’s a lot easier and
cheaper to buy a new TV or computer than to repair an old one. But what do we do
with the old ones? There are a lot of places that recycle them. They repair them and
send them to places where poor people can use them. Speaker E
We have a big problem with rubbish because we buy too many things! Take food for
example. Every week we throw away far too much and we can’t recycle old food! We
have to learn to buy only what we need and then our rubbish bags won’t be so full. UNIT 4

16. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the reading SMOKEJUMPERS
Every year, wildfires destroy millions of hectares of forest land. Smokejumpers help
to stop this. Smokejumpers are a special type of firefighter. They jump from planes or
are lowered by helicopters into areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot, such
as the middle of a mountain forest. They race to put out fires as fast as they can.
At a fire site, smokejumpers first examine the land and decide how to fight the fire.
Their main goal is to stop a fire from spreading or to slow its progress until full,

ground-based firefighters arrive. Using basic equipment such as shovels and axes,
smokejumpers clear land of burnable material, like dry grass and dead trees. The work
is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t

Many people dream of going on a great travel adventure. Most of us keep dreaming: others make it happen.
Gregg Bleakney’s dream was to travel the Americas from top to bottom. He got the
idea after he finished a 1,600-kilometre bike ride. Gregg’s friend Brooks Allen was
also a cyclist. The two friends talked and decided on their goal: They would travel
from Alaska to Argentina-by bike.
To pay for the journey, Gregg and Brooks worked and saved money for years, in
2005, after four years of planning, they set off. Once they were on the road, they often
camped outdoors or stayed in hostels.
In many places along their route, local people opened their homes to the two friends and gave them food.
In May 2007-two years, 12 countries, and over 30,500 km later-Gregg eventually
reached Ushuaia, Argentina, at the southern tip of South America.

Read the letter below and decide if the statement is true (T) or false(F). Hi Join,
How are you? I’m writing to tell you that we’re going to have to change the travel
arrangements for our trip next weekend.
As you know, the plan was to get the train to Brighton on Friday evening.
Unfortunately, I have to pick Carla up from the station at 8p.m. Sorry!
So, I’ve got two suggestions to make. First, we could go in my car on Saturday
morning. It won’t be as relaxing as talking the train, but it will be faster.
Otherwise, we could get up really early on Saturday and take the first train to Brighton.
We won’t miss too much of our day that way.
Let me know which idea you prefer and I’ll arrange it. All the best,
